After the change, “Hey Google” and supported touch shortcuts call Assistant. Switching does not automatically delete your Gemini Apps Activity.
Switch back in the Gemini app
- Open the Gemini app on your Pixel.
- Tap Menu on the left, then tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Switch to Google Assistant, then select Google Assistant.
- In the confirmation dialog, tap Switch.
These are Google’s documented steps for setting Assistant as the primary assistant on an Android phone or tablet. Google’s Gemini app instructions describe the switch and its effect on phone activation.

If the switch option is missing
You can also check Android’s default-assistant setting: Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app. Select Google Assistant if it appears in the list. Google notes that settings can vary by device, so labels or availability may differ on your Pixel.

This setting changes which app is the default digital assistant; it is not the same as uninstalling Gemini. Switching back does not require deleting the Gemini app.

What changes after switching
Google says Assistant responds to “Hey Google” and touch activation, such as pressing and holding the power button. Pixel activation methods depend on the model, Android version, language, and settings. Google’s setup guidance specifies power-button activation for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold; other generations may use different activation methods. See Google’s Pixel Assistant setup instructions for model-specific options.
Why you might prefer Assistant
Google says some familiar Assistant features and services are not supported in Gemini. Its guidance gives examples including certain podcast, news, and radio providers, some third-party music providers, and Interpreter mode. Those examples are not a complete or permanent list; check current support for the particular service or feature you rely on. Google’s Gemini feature guidance explains the limitations.

Google’s Pixel setup page lists common Assistant tasks such as asking questions, making calls, sending texts, setting reminders, and getting directions. Whether a particular task or activation method is available can depend on your phone and settings.
Your Gemini activity remains separate
Changing the primary assistant does not automatically erase Gemini Apps Activity. If you want to review or delete that activity, manage it separately in your Google Account. Google also says Assistant interaction data is saved to the account when Web & App Activity is enabled.
