If Gemini voice commands aren’t working on your Pixel, first check whether “Hey Google” and Voice Match are enabled. Then work through connection, Google app updates, Assistant language, battery settings, and Voice Match retraining. If Gemini opens but one command fails—or the problem happens only while the phone is locked—the cause may be feature availability or a lock-screen requirement rather than wake-word detection.
Identify where the voice command fails
Separate the problem into the stage where it occurs. This is a useful way to narrow down the checks; it is not a diagnosis published by Google.

- No response to “Hey Google”: check Hey Google, Voice Match, account and language eligibility, and the general Android troubleshooting steps below.
- Gemini opens but does not capture your request: check the connection and microphone environment, then try speaking somewhere quieter.
- Gemini hears you but cannot complete one action: the requested feature may not be supported in Gemini.
- It works unlocked but not while locked: check Gemini’s lock-screen setting and whether the request requires authentication.
Turn on Hey Google and Voice Match
Google’s Pixel guidance says to check that Hey Google and Voice Match are on and that Assistant has been taught to recognize your voice. The stated Pixel route is Google Home > profile picture > Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy > Voice Match > Set up. You can also reach Voice Match through Gemini: tap your profile picture, open the Google Account’s Data & privacy settings, and select Voice Match. Turn on Hey Google and follow the prompts. Check whether your account and language are eligible
Google says Gemini’s Hey Google and Voice Match features are unavailable for supervised accounts. It also lists Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian as languages in which these features are unavailable. If wake-word activation is unavailable for your account or language, try a touch-based way to open Gemini. Where voice chat is supported, you can also tap the microphone button rather than using “Hey Google.”

Try Google’s general Android troubleshooting checks

- Check the internet connection. Confirm that the phone has a strong connection. If you are having connection problems, restart the phone and try again.
- Update the Google app. Open the Play Store, find the Google app, and install an available update.
- Check the Assistant language. Confirm that the language selected for Assistant is one you use and that the relevant Gemini voice feature is available in it.
- Test without battery-saving modes. Turn off Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery temporarily, then test “Hey Google” again.
- Reduce background noise. Try in a quieter place and say “Hey Google” in a normal conversational voice.
- Retrain Voice Match. If it still does not respond, repeat the Voice Match setup so Google can learn your voice again.
Check whether the command itself works in Gemini
Wake-word activation and command support are separate issues. Google says Gemini uses Google Assistant for the wake phrase and some familiar quick voice actions, but not every feature that worked in Assistant is available in Gemini. If Gemini reliably opens and responds to other requests but one action does not work, check whether that feature is supported rather than repeating Voice Match setup. Check Gemini when the Pixel is locked
Gemini can handle certain requests from the lock screen when the relevant setting is enabled. Other requests—particularly those involving personal content—may require you to unlock the phone. If commands work unlocked but fail while locked, open Gemini > profile picture > Settings > Gemini on lock screen and check the setting. Try another activation method to determine whether the problem is limited to “Hey Google.” Google lists these ways to open Gemini on Pixel:
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap Gemini in the Google app.
- Hold the Pixel power button.
- Say “Hey Google,” if wake-word activation is available and working.

What happens to voice requests handled with Assistant
Google says the Assistant component waits for an activation, uses Voice Match, and routes the query to Gemini. Similar sounds can sometimes trigger activation. Google also says interactions handled with Assistant assistance are stored in Gemini Apps Activity, subject to your activity settings; that general description does not establish what happened on a particular phone.
