The safest approach is to keep your old browser installed, export bookmarks as an HTML backup, import the data the new browser supports, handle passwords separately when needed, and verify everything before deleting or resetting the old browser.
What can move to a new browser?
Browser migration is not one all-or-nothing operation. Depending on the source browser, destination, platform, and selected options, an importer may offer bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, extensions, or form autofill. Preferences and other parts of your setup may not be included.

Google Chrome Help says users can switch browsers without losing settings and bookmarks, but its documented transfer options vary by browser and data type. Treat “settings” as a checklist, not a promise that your new browser will look and behave exactly like the old one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Bookmarks: usually the easiest data to back up and move, including with an HTML file.
- Passwords: may transfer through direct import or a separate CSV workflow, depending on the browsers and platform.
- History, autofill, and extensions: may be selectable in some importers, but check the destination’s options.
- Preferences and open tabs: the desktop guides covered here do not establish a universal way to transfer them.
Before you switch, make a transfer checklist
Write down what you rely on so you can check each category in the new browser. Firefox’s desktop importer, for example, lets users choose a source browser, profile, and data categories; it documents options such as saved passwords, bookmarks, history, extensions, and form autofill.

Export bookmarks to HTML as a fallback
A bookmarks HTML file is a useful cross-browser backup: Chrome can export bookmarks in this format, Firefox supports bookmark HTML import and export, Edge accepts a favorites HTML file, and Safari on Mac can import bookmarks from HTML. The file is for bookmarks; it does not carry your saved passwords.

Import into Safari on Mac
Safari can import from Chrome or Firefox using File > Import From Browser. You can do this when first opening Safari or later. Apple’s guide also documents bookmark HTML and password CSV imports. It does not provide iPhone or iPad migration steps: Apple’s Safari import guide.
Move saved passwords separately when necessary
Do not assume a bookmark export includes credentials. Password import has its own supported formats and platform limits, and a CSV export is a password file—not a complete browser backup.

| Destination | Password transfer documented | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge | Import a password CSV file. | Microsoft’s cited instructions cover Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s import guide. |
| Safari on Mac | Import a password CSV file. | Apple says imported passwords go into iCloud Keychain. The cited guide is for Safari on Mac. See Apple’s guide. |
| Firefox from Chrome | Mozilla documents exporting Chrome passwords to CSV and using Firefox’s migration wizard when automatic import is unavailable. | Mozilla says automatic Chrome password import is unavailable on Windows in its current instructions and also identifies Linux as a platform where automatic import is unavailable. Its Windows instructions specify Firefox version 140. See Mozilla’s Chrome-to-Firefox password instructions and Mozilla’s switching guide. |
Handle a password CSV cautiously: use it only for the migration, avoid leaving it in a shared or publicly accessible folder, and delete the export when you have confirmed the credentials arrived. The browser guides describe how to move the file; they do not establish a security guarantee for storing it.
Verify the new browser before removing the old one
- Open several bookmarks, including a few from different folders, and confirm they lead to the expected pages.
- Visit sites where you use saved credentials and check that the destination can fill them in. Confirm any passwords that did not transfer through the direct importer using the browser-specific CSV instructions.
- Check the extensions or add-ons you depend on and reinstall or configure them as needed.
- Review important preferences, such as your homepage, search engine, and autofill behavior, rather than assuming they were copied.
- If something seems missing, check whether the import used the correct source profile and whether the category was selected. Keep using the old browser until you have retrieved anything you still need.
Firefox’s Chrome-switching guidance says importing does not delete Chrome or change its settings, so you can check the new setup while the original remains available.
Platform limits to keep in mind
- Chrome: Google’s general help covers bookmark export and importing data such as history, homepage, bookmarks, search engines, and saved passwords where supported. Its Chromebook bookmark procedure is not a complete Chromebook password-migration guide.
- Firefox: the cited import and migration instructions are for desktop Firefox. Mozilla identifies version 140 in its Windows Chrome-password CSV instructions; automatic Chrome password import is also unavailable on Linux according to its switching guide.
- Edge: Microsoft’s cited steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Safari: Apple’s cited instructions cover Safari on Mac, not iPhone or iPad.
- Mobile browsers: desktop menu paths and file workflows should not be assumed to apply on phones or tablets; the cited guides do not establish a universal mobile migration procedure.
Because menus and supported import options can change, use the linked official instructions for your browser and platform if a label differs from the steps above.
