The plugin listing also documents switching through the WordPress Command Palette. The exact availability of that interface can depend on the WordPress version and admin screen you are using; see the listing’s instructions.
Who is allowed to switch accounts?
The operator must have the capability to edit the target user. The plugin listing says the default is Administrators on a single-site installation and Super Admins on Multisite. A site’s custom role or capability configuration can change who qualifies, so check those permissions if Switch To is missing. Do not grant broad administrator access or share passwords just to enable account switching; have the site owner set an appropriate capability policy.

Security and privacy considerations
User Switching says it does not reveal passwords and cannot be used to retrieve them. It describes using WordPress authentication cookies, nonces and session validation where appropriate, and supporting HTTPS. These are the plugin author’s stated protections, not an independent security audit. Use HTTPS on the site and limit switching permission to staff who need it.
The plugin’s privacy statement says it sends no data to third parties. It also discloses that its cookies use WordPress’s authentication-cookie mechanism and include the user_login field in plain text; the author advises treating that field as potentially personally identifiable information for privacy and regulatory purposes. Review the plugin listing and privacy details alongside your site’s own privacy obligations.

Compatibility and common issues
-
No “Switch To” action: Confirm that the plugin is active and that your account can edit the target user. On sites with custom capability mappings, ask an administrator to verify the role configuration rather than escalating your access by default.
-
A two-factor prompt appears: The plugin says it works with most two-factor authentication solutions, but its FAQ notes that Duo Universal or Duo Security users may need the User Switching for Duo add-on to avoid a second-factor prompt. Check the plugin FAQ and your site’s Duo setup.
-
The site uses Multisite, WooCommerce, BuddyPress, bbPress, or a membership plugin: The User Switching listing claims compatibility with Multisite, WooCommerce, BuddyPress, bbPress, most membership and user-management plugins, and most two-factor solutions. Treat that as the vendor’s compatibility claim; verify the workflow on your own site, particularly where account access or checkout behavior matters.
-
You need a record of who switched: The FAQ names Simple History, WP Activity Log, and Stream as audit-trail options that can help correlate switches with the originating administrator. It also says the plugin triggers actions that can support additional logging. Review your logging configuration and retention policy before using switching for sensitive support work.

Is another plugin necessary?
WP User Switch is another directory option. Its listing says administrators can allow other users to switch while preventing those users from switching to an administrator account. That may matter if you need delegated support access, but compare its permissions and safeguards with your site’s requirements rather than assuming the options are equivalent. See its WordPress.org listing.
The WordPress.org tag page showed 200,000+ active installations for User Switching on October 4, 2026. That directory count changes over time and is not an independent measure of security or quality. Check the current listing for current compatibility and maintenance details before installing.
