What do you get with the free plugin?
The free option is not described as a time-limited trial. PMPro says its open-source core plugin is self-hosted, and its core plugin and free add-ons can be used without purchasing a license. A paid membership provides a license key for premium add-ons and automatic updates; paid plans add support or hosted services depending on tier. You still need your own WordPress site and hosting for the self-hosted option. Plan details and license documentation.

What PMPro says the plugin can do
PMPro’s feature and documentation pages describe a broad membership toolkit. These are vendor-documented capabilities; they are not a substitute for independent testing of usability, performance, or service quality.
Restrict content and organize memberships
- Control access to posts, pages, categories, editor blocks, and custom post types, with content dripping for staged access.
- Create member directories and profiles, and support sites built around communities, events, courses, downloads, and other WordPress content.
- Set up unlimited membership levels, assign multiple levels to one member, offer group or team memberships, collect custom member fields, and send member emails.
Multiple levels can matter when a site sells separate access—for example, a core membership plus a separately billed course. PMPro’s level groups let an operator define whether users choose one level or may hold multiple levels within a group. Read about membership levels and groups.

Charge members and manage renewals
The vendor lists free and paid levels, one-time charges, recurring subscriptions, trials, coupons, proration, pausing options, renewal-date controls, variable pricing, and donations. It names Stripe, PayPal, and manual or offline payments, and documents an option to sell a membership level as a WooCommerce product. Gateway availability and payment capabilities can depend on your country, account, and configuration; verify the relevant setup before committing to a checkout design. Standard or Max: which operating model fits?
Choose Free or Standard if you will manage the site
Free is the place to start if the core features meet your needs and you are comfortable managing hosting, updates, security, and setup. Standard is the listed entry paid license for a site that needs premium add-ons, automatic updates, or paid support while remaining self-hosted. Compare the specific add-ons you need with your existing hosting and maintenance costs rather than treating the license price as the entire cost of running a membership business.
Consider Max if you want PMPro-managed hosting and help
Max is not simply a larger plugin license. PMPro describes it as a managed service that includes a dedicated server, site migration, security and performance services, and hands-on implementation. Its feature page lists a base managed-hosting configuration of 2 CPUs, 4 GB RAM, and 80 GB SSD; that is a vendor-listed configuration, not a benchmark. Max 2x has a higher price and a higher stated order range. Whether these services justify the premium depends on your operational needs, not just your expected order count. Managed hosting details.
Rank #4
Setup, themes, and customization
PMPro documents a setup wizard that guides configuration of membership levels, frontend pages, payment gateway, security, and email settings. The documentation also covers levels, settings, gateways, templates, compatibility, and developer hooks. A wizard is evidence of a guided process, not proof that setup is effortless or takes a particular amount of time. Setup wizard documentation and documentation index.
Memberlite is PMPro’s official theme, but PMPro says its plugin can also be used with other WordPress themes; a dedicated theme is not required. Theme and personalization information.
Best Value
Is Paid Memberships Pro worth it?
PMPro is most compelling if its documented WordPress membership features match your business model and you value the choice between a self-managed free or licensed plugin and a managed-hosting service. The free core makes it possible to assess the plugin without buying a license, while Standard provides a paid route to premium add-ons, updates, and support. Max is relevant when bundled hosting, migration, and implementation matter enough to justify a substantially higher service price.
There is not enough independent evidence here to rate PMPro’s real-world performance, ease of use, support quality, or comparative value against other membership plugins. Before choosing, confirm that the features and payment gateways you need are available for your country and setup, then include hosting, maintenance, add-ons, and service costs in your budget.
