How to Switch Between Google Translate and Gboard When Translating Messages

Use Gboard Translate for new messages, Tap to Translate for copied text, and the Globe key to restore Gboard. This Android guide explains each workflow, version differences, and fixes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Android, the right method depends on where the text is. Use Gboard Translate to write a new message in one language and insert its translation directly into the messaging field. Use Google Translate’s Tap to Translate for text you have already received or copied. If you only need to restore Gboard as the active keyboard, open a text field, hold the Globe key, and select Gboard.

The steps below separate those workflows so you do not confuse changing keyboards, changing Gboard’s typing language, and translating message content.

Translate a new message with Gboard

Use this workflow when you are about to write a message and want Gboard to convert what you type before it is inserted. Google documents the feature for Android phones and tablets and notes that some steps apply only to Android 7.0 and later. Menu names can vary with the Gboard and messaging-app versions installed on your device.

Open Gboard in the conversation

  1. Open your messaging app and select the conversation.
  2. Tap the message-entry field so the keyboard opens.
  3. If Gboard is not the keyboard shown, restore it with the Globe-key procedure in the section below.

Translation starts from the keyboard, not from the conversation’s attachment or overflow menu. The text field must have focus so Gboard can insert the translated result.

Open the Translate tool

  1. In Gboard, tap Open features menu. Depending on the layout, this may appear as an arrow or a four-square icon above the letter keys.
  2. Tap Translate.
  3. Choose the language Gboard should translate from and the language it should translate into.

Google describes this as translating text while you type on Gboard. The language pair in the Translate panel controls the preview; it is independent of the keyboard language selected with the space bar.

Write, check, and insert the translation

  1. Type the message in the source language.
  2. Read the translated preview before sending. Check names, numbers, dates, negation, and idioms particularly carefully.
  3. Tap the preview or its Select control to place the translated text in the message field.
  4. Review the final text in the messaging app, then send it using the app’s normal send button.

The translation is inserted into the field; it is not sent automatically. You can edit the inserted wording in the message field before sending.

Change the source or target language

When the translation panel is open, tap either language selector and choose a different language. The source language is the language you enter, and the target language is the language shown in the preview. If the wrong direction is selected, swap the two selectors rather than changing the keyboard layout.

For Google’s current Android instructions, see Gboard Help: Translate as you type. The page identifies Android 7.0 and later for some of the documented steps; an individual phone may show different labels after an app or system update.

Translate a message you already received with Tap to Translate

Use Tap to Translate when the words already exist in a message, webpage, email, or another app. This method works from copied text, so it is suited to an incoming message that you want to understand without retyping it in Gboard.

Enable Tap to Translate once

  1. Open the Google Translate app.
  2. Tap the menu, then choose Settings.
  3. Open Tap to Translate and enable it.
  4. On Android 10 and later, follow the additional setup that asks you to tap Paste when prompted.

Google says that Tap to Translate lets you translate text from other apps without opening the full Google Translate app for every translation after setup. The Android 10-and-later Paste step is part of the documented setup, not an optional translation language.

Copy the message text

  1. Return to the messaging app and press and hold the message text.
  2. Use the selection handles if necessary, then tap Copy.
  3. Tap the Google Translate icon or the Tap to Translate control that appears.
  4. Choose the language you want to read, if Translate does not detect or select it automatically.

Tap to Translate is documented for text, not images. If the message is a screenshot or photograph, copying ordinary text from it will not work through this feature; the copied-text workflow applies only when selectable text is available.

Read the result and return to the conversation

Review the translation in the Translate interface, then dismiss it or return to the messaging app. The original message remains in the conversation. Tap to Translate is for understanding or transforming copied content; it does not replace the original message and does not send a reply.

See Google’s Android instructions at Google Translate Help: Translate text in other apps. On Pixel 6 and later, Google also documents an optional floating icon for Tap to Translate. Its presence depends on the device and enabled settings.

Switch the active keyboard back to Gboard

If another keyboard is currently covering the message field, translation controls from Gboard will not be visible. This is a keyboard-selection problem, not a Translate-language problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open any app with a text field, such as the message composer.
  2. When the keyboard appears, touch and hold the Globe key. It is normally near the bottom-left or bottom-right of the keyboard, although its position can vary.
  3. When the keyboard list opens, tap Gboard.
  4. Tap the message field again if needed, then open Gboard’s features menu and choose Translate.

This procedure changes which keyboard is active. It does not translate text that is already in the conversation and does not alter Gboard’s configured languages. Google documents the same restoration method in Gboard Help: Fix problems with Gboard.

Do not confuse keyboard switching with changing Gboard’s language

Gboard can have several typing languages configured while remaining the same active keyboard. To move between those configured languages, open a text field and touch and hold the space bar, then select the language you need.

Add another typing language

  1. With Gboard open, open Gboard settings.
  2. Tap Languages.
  3. Tap Add keyboard.
  4. Select a language and choose its layout.
  5. Tap Done.

After a language is added, holding the space bar lets you switch among the configured layouts. This changes typing suggestions and the keyboard layout; it is not the same as selecting a source and target pair in Gboard Translate.

A practical decision tree

You are writing a new outgoing message

Keep the messaging app open, activate Gboard, open Open features menu → Translate, select the source and target languages, type, check the preview, and insert it. This avoids copying text to another app and keeps the translated draft in the message field.

You received a message and need to understand it

Select and copy the message, then use Tap to Translate. If the icon does not appear, verify that Tap to Translate is enabled under Google Translate’s Settings. The feature requires selectable text; it is not the documented route for an image.

You cannot find Translate in the keyboard

First verify that Gboard, rather than another keyboard, is active by holding the Globe key and choosing Gboard. Then open Gboard’s features menu. If the menu labels differ, look for the features-menu control above the keys; Google notes that interfaces can vary by app and Android version.

You changed the keyboard but the words are still in the old language

Changing the active keyboard only selects Gboard. To change the language you type in, hold the space bar and select a configured language. To convert the words into another language, open Gboard Translate and choose a target language separately.

Android version and interface differences

  • Android 7.0 and later: Google’s Gboard translation instructions identify some steps as available on these versions and newer ones. Older Android releases may not present the same controls.
  • Android 10 and later: Tap to Translate setup includes a Paste step in Google’s instructions.
  • Pixel 6 and later: Google documents an optional floating Tap to Translate icon. It is not required for the copied-text workflow.
  • App and manufacturer variations: Keyboard icons, menu placement, and wording can change with the Gboard release, Google Translate release, phone manufacturer, or Android skin.

These differences explain why two Android phones can show the same feature under slightly different labels. Follow the function—features menu, Translate, Globe-key keyboard list, or space-bar language switch—rather than relying on an exact icon position.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Gboard Translate is missing

  • Tap a text field and confirm that Gboard is active. Hold the Globe key and select Gboard if another keyboard is shown.
  • Open Gboard’s features menu; Translate is a feature inside that menu, not a separate keyboard.
  • Check that the phone meets the Android version noted in Google’s instructions and remember that labels may differ after updates.

The Globe key is not visible

The key can be placed differently depending on the keyboard layout. Look along the bottom row for the globe symbol, then press and hold it. If you still cannot identify it, open a text field and use the keyboard’s visible language or input-method control; the documented Gboard route is the Globe-key menu.

Tap to Translate does nothing after copying

  • Confirm that Tap to Translate is enabled in Google Translate under Settings → Tap to Translate.
  • On Android 10 or later, complete the requested Paste step.
  • Copy selectable text rather than an image. Google’s documented feature applies to text from other apps.
  • If a floating icon is absent, remember that Google describes it as optional on Pixel 6 and later; use the available Translate control after copying instead.

The translation direction is wrong

In Gboard Translate, check both language selectors: one is the language you type and the other is the language you want inserted. In Tap to Translate, choose the language for the copied text’s result. Neither issue is fixed by switching the active keyboard.

The translated draft needs correction

Translation previews can require editing for context, names, technical terms, politeness, or regional wording. Treat the preview as editable message text: correct it in the composer before sending rather than assuming the keyboard’s language setting will fix a wording choice.

What each switch changes

There are three independent controls that are easy to conflate. The Globe-key menu selects the keyboard app that supplies the keys. The space-bar menu selects one of the typing languages configured inside Gboard. The Translate panel converts the text you enter into a target language and presents a preview for insertion. Changing one control does not silently change either of the others.

For example, selecting Spanish from the space bar gives you a Spanish keyboard layout and typing suggestions, but it does not translate an English sentence already in the composer. Conversely, selecting English-to-Spanish in Gboard Translate does not require you to change the keyboard layout first. You can type with a configured layout, review the Spanish preview, and insert that result in the same field.

Likewise, restoring Gboard does not process an incoming message. It only makes Gboard available for the next text-entry action. To understand a received sentence, copy its selectable text and use Tap to Translate; to answer in another language, place the cursor in the reply field and use Gboard Translate.

Examples of the best workflow

Writing to someone in another language: Open the conversation, tap the composer, restore Gboard if necessary, and choose Open features menu → Translate. Set the language you are writing from and the recipient’s language, type the complete thought, inspect the preview, and insert it. You can still edit punctuation, names, or a specific term before sending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading an incoming message: Press and hold the received text, copy it, and tap the Translate control. Select the language for the result if needed. This leaves the original message untouched and lets you return to the conversation after reading the overlay.

Replying after reading: These can be two separate actions: Tap to Translate for the incoming text, then Gboard Translate in the reply field. Switching to Gboard alone is only the preparation step; it is not a translation command.

Privacy and message handling considerations

These workflows place text into either Gboard’s Translate panel or Google Translate’s copied-text interface. Avoid copying sensitive message content merely to test the feature. For an outgoing message, Gboard Translate minimizes app switching because the draft is created in the existing text field. For an incoming message, Tap to Translate is appropriate when the text is already present and selectable.

The official help pages do not establish a universal translation accuracy rate, supported-language count, or identical interface for every Android device. Do not treat a language selector, an Android-version threshold, or the appearance of an icon as a guarantee that every phone will expose the same options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate a new text message with Gboard?

Open the conversation and tap its text field. In Gboard, open the features menu, tap Translate, choose the source and target languages, type your message, review the preview, and tap the preview or Select control to insert it. Sending remains a separate step.

How do I translate a message I already received?

Enable Google Translate’s Tap to Translate under Settings, then press and hold selectable text in the message and tap Copy. Tap the Translate control or icon that appears, choose the result language if needed, and read the translation. The feature is documented for text, not images.

How do I switch back to Gboard?

Open any text field, touch and hold the Globe key, and tap Gboard in the keyboard list. This changes the active keyboard; it does not translate existing message text.

Why can’t I find Translate in Gboard?

First make sure Gboard is active by using the Globe-key menu. Then tap Gboard’s Open features menu and look for Translate. Menu icons and labels can differ by Android version, phone manufacturer, and app release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does changing Gboard’s language translate my message?

No. Holding the space bar changes among typing languages and layouts configured in Gboard. Translation uses the separate Translate panel, where you choose a source and target language.

What Android versions have these controls?

Google’s Gboard instructions identify some translation steps for Android 7.0 and later. Tap to Translate setup includes a Paste step on Android 10 and later, and Google documents an optional floating icon for Pixel 6 and later. Exact menus vary by device and app version.

The Bottom Line

Use Gboard Translate for a new outgoing message, because it previews and inserts the translation directly in the composer. Use Tap to Translate for selectable text you have already copied from a received message or another app. If the wrong keyboard is active, hold the Globe key and choose Gboard; if only the typing language is wrong, hold the space bar. These are separate controls, so choose the one that matches the task.
