The fastest way to make a home-office screen more comfortable is to remove reflections before buying anything: place the monitor at a right angle to windows, block or diffuse bright light, shield lamps, and set screen brightness to match the room. Then position the display directly in front of you, roughly 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) away, with its top at or below eye level. Increase text size instead of leaning forward, and use regular distance-viewing breaks.
A matte anti-glare filter can help when reflections remain, but it is optional and must not make the image difficult to see. Eye discomfort that persists—or eyes that are consistently red, blurry, watery, light-sensitive or painful—needs an eye-care professional rather than another accessory.

Start with a five-minute glare reset
Before changing your monitor or ordering a filter, correct the light reaching it. Sit in your normal working position and look at the screen while it is showing a dark page or a blank document; reflections that are hard to notice on a white page become obvious. Work through this order:

- Move the screen. Turn the monitor so its face is at right angles to the nearest window and to bright light sources. Do not place the display directly opposite a window.
- Soften daylight. Close blinds or curtains enough to remove direct rays while keeping the room comfortably lit. Diffuse, evenly distributed light is preferable to a bright patch behind or beside the screen.
- Shield fixtures. Aim a desk lamp at the work surface, not at your eyes or the display. Use a shade or other shielding for overhead or task lighting that creates a bright reflection.
- Clean the panel. Dust and fingerprints scatter light and can make a reflection look worse. Follow the monitor maker’s cleaning instructions and use a soft, suitable cloth.
- Match brightness. Lower a very bright screen in a dim room, or raise it when the surrounding room is bright. Adjust contrast if text still looks washed out.
Check the screen again from your seated posture after every change. A position that looks clear while standing can produce glare when you sit down or lean back.

Why glare and eye strain occur together
Reflections reduce the usable contrast
A window, ceiling fixture or lamp reflected on a glossy panel adds light over the image. Text and controls then appear less distinct, so you may squint, lean closer or increase the display brightness. That brighter display can make the mismatch with a dim room more uncomfortable. Removing the reflected light is usually more effective than simply turning the monitor up.
Near work demands sustained focus
Screen work keeps your eyes focused at one nearby distance for long periods. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) describes about 25 inches, or arm’s length, as a useful rule of thumb; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gives a general preferred range of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm). These are practical ranges, not a prescription. The right distance is the one at which you can read without leaning, squinting or bringing the screen unusually close.
Concentration can reduce blinking
Extended attention to a screen can accompany dry or uncomfortable eyes. Deliberate blinking and looking away at regular intervals interrupt that near-focus task. The National Eye Institute (NEI) presents the 20-20-20 reminder: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Use distance that keeps text readable
Place the monitor directly in front of you rather than off to one side. Start near the middle of OSHA’s 20–40-inch range and adjust for your eyesight, screen size and text density. AAO’s approximately 25-inch/arm’s-length guidance is a convenient starting point. If text is hard to read at that distance, enlarge the text or application zoom before moving the display closer.
| Adjustment | Practical target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing distance | 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), with about 25 inches as an arm’s-length starting point | Lets you read without leaning toward the panel |
| Horizontal position | Centered directly in front of you | Prevents a constant head turn or asymmetric posture |
| Top edge | At or slightly below eye level | Encourages a slight downward gaze |
| Text size | Large enough to read at the chosen distance | Allows readability without squinting or creeping closer |
Set height and angle together
OSHA recommends keeping the top of the screen at or below eye level so your gaze falls slightly downward. Raise or lower the stand, use a stable riser, or adjust the chair so this relationship is comfortable. Then check the panel angle from your ordinary posture. Tilting a screen can remove one reflection but introduce a bright streak from an overhead fixture, so recheck the image after every angle change.

Check a laptop separately
If a laptop is your main computer, the same principles still apply: center it, keep the screen top at or below eye level when possible, and maintain a readable distance. Raising the laptop may make the keyboard awkward; a separate keyboard and pointing device can let you position the display without forcing your shoulders or wrists into an uncomfortable arrangement.
Fix glare according to its source
Different reflections need different changes. Identify the brightest object visible on the panel, then use the corresponding fix rather than adding several accessories at once.

| Glare source | First intervention | Additional option | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window in front of or behind the monitor | Place the display at right angles to the window; adjust blinds or curtains | Diffuse the daylight or rearrange the desk | Making the room dark while leaving the reflection in place |
| Overhead fixture | Change the monitor angle or seating position; shield or diffuse the fixture | Use indirect lighting | Tilting the panel until a different reflection appears |
| Desk lamp | Aim it at the desk surface and keep the beam out of your eyes and off the screen | Use an adjustable, shielded lamp | Placing the lamp beside the monitor at screen height |
| Bright screen in a dim room | Reduce display brightness and add comfortable, diffuse room light | Raise contrast or enlarge text | Using maximum brightness to compensate for a reflection |
OSHA’s workstation-environment guidance favors diffuse, well-distributed light, blinds or drapes where needed, and indirect or shielded fixtures. The goal is not a dark cave; it is a room without a bright source competing with the image.
Adjust display settings for readability
Set brightness by comparison with the room
Open a mostly white document and compare the screen with nearby paper or a light wall. If the panel looks like a lamp, lower its brightness. If it looks gray and difficult to distinguish from the room, raise it modestly. Recheck at the time of day when you normally work because daylight changes. There is no universal brightness percentage that suits every room or person.
Use contrast and scaling before moving closer
Increasing contrast may make characters easier to separate from their background. Enlarge operating-system text, browser zoom or application controls when small type makes you lean forward. These changes preserve your viewing distance and can be reversed for tasks that need more workspace.

Do not let a filter hide a visibility problem
If you use a glare filter, OSHA cautions that it should not significantly reduce screen visibility. A dim, hazy image can prompt more squinting and defeat the purpose of the purchase. Compare the display with and without the filter in your normal lighting, including dark content and fine text.

A matte anti-glare monitor screen filter is an optional step after repositioning, lighting and brightness changes. It can scatter reflected light when the desk cannot be moved or a window must remain in a difficult position. It is not guaranteed to relieve eye strain, and it cannot correct a monitor that is too close, too high or too bright.
Check compatibility before buying
- Dimensions: Measure the visible screen area, not just the diagonal size. A filter that is too small leaves reflective edges; one that is too large may cover the bezel or interfere with the camera.
- Attachment: Confirm whether the design clips on, hangs from the bezel or uses adhesive. Removable mounting is useful if more than one person uses the monitor.
- Touch operation: A filter can change touch sensitivity or make gestures less smooth. Verify that the model is intended for a touch display if you need touch input.
- Image quality: Look for clear text at your normal distance and brightness. Reject any option that introduces distracting haze, color change or loss of detail.
- Cleaning: Follow the filter’s care instructions; a scratched or dusty surface can add its own scattering.
Existing blinds, curtains or a shielded adjustable lamp may solve the same reflection at lower cost and with fewer compatibility concerns. Treat a filter as a targeted tool for a remaining reflection, not as a required part of every workstation.
Build breaks into the workday
Use the 20-20-20 reminder
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. The NEI presents this as a simple reminder, not as a guaranteed treatment or a study-derived dose. A wall across the room, a view out of a window or another distant object works; the important change is away from the near screen.
Blink and vary the task
Blink deliberately during reading and typing, especially when concentrating. Use a natural pause—after sending a message, saving a document or finishing a meeting—to look away. If you have several displays, do not leave a bright secondary panel in your peripheral vision; lower its brightness or turn it off when it is not needed.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Make breaks easy to remember
- Set a repeating calendar or timer reminder that does not require staring at another notification.
- Put a distant object in your usual line of sight so the 20-foot target is obvious.
- At the reminder, relax your focus and blink rather than switching immediately to a phone held close to your face.
Breaks complement, rather than replace, a correct screen position and appropriate lighting. If discomfort continues despite both, consider an eye examination.
What blue-light glasses can—and cannot—do here
AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use. That advice is specific to using such glasses as a digital-eye-strain solution; it does not mean every pair of prescription eyewear is unsuitable.
Separate computer prescriptions from blue-light filters
Prescription computer glasses are intended to address a person’s focusing or prescription needs at screen distance. They are different from non-prescription blue-light-blocking glasses and should be discussed with an eye-care professional if you have trouble focusing, see blur or need a different working distance.
Do not use eyewear to compensate for reflections
Glasses cannot remove a window reflection, correct a monitor that is too bright for the room or replace a needed break. Fix the workstation first; seek professional advice for a vision-related problem rather than assuming a lens coating is the answer.
Troubleshoot in a sensible order
If you still see a bright patch on the screen
- Return to your seated position and identify the reflected object.
- Move the monitor until its face is perpendicular to that window or fixture.
- Close or adjust blinds, curtains or shades; diffuse the light instead of eliminating all room light.
- Shield or redirect the lamp so it lights the desk without shining toward the panel.
- Clean the screen and test again before considering a filter.
If the image is clear but your eyes feel tired
- Confirm that the monitor is centered and roughly 20–40 inches away.
- Set the top edge at or below eye level and keep a slight downward gaze.
- Increase text size so you can read without leaning or squinting.
- Match brightness to the room and try a moderate contrast increase.
- Use the 20-20-20 reminder and blink deliberately.
If a new filter makes reading worse
Remove it temporarily and compare fine text, dark interfaces and photographs at the same brightness. Check its dimensions and attachment, then return it if it reduces visibility, adds haze or interferes with touch use. A filter that obscures the image is not a successful glare fix.

If changing the monitor creates a new reflection
Recheck the angle of the panel and the location of overhead fixtures. Small changes in tilt can redirect a ceiling reflection into your eyes. Adjust the light source or use shielding rather than continuing to tilt the screen away from a comfortable gaze.
When to seek eye care
Home-office adjustments are appropriate for temporary discomfort, but persistent or concerning symptoms should not be managed by repeatedly buying accessories. AAO advises contacting an ophthalmologist when symptoms continue and specifically flags eyes that are consistently red, blurry, watery, light-sensitive or painful. An examination can distinguish a workstation issue from a vision or eye-surface problem and determine whether prescription computer glasses or another treatment is appropriate.
Seek care based on the symptom pattern, not on whether a filter or brightness change seemed to help for a day. Keep note of when symptoms occur, how long they last and whether they affect one or both eyes; that information can make an appointment more useful.
A practical order of operations
Use this sequence whenever you set up a new room or move your desk:
- Remove window and fixture reflections by changing the monitor’s orientation.
- Soften direct daylight and use diffuse, shielded lighting.
- Center the monitor, set a comfortable 20–40-inch distance and place its top at or below eye level.
- Set brightness for the room, then adjust contrast and text size for comfortable reading.
- Clean the display and reassess it from your real working posture.
- Take a 20-second distance-viewing break every 20 minutes and blink regularly.
- Only if glare remains, evaluate a correctly sized matte filter without accepting reduced visibility.
- If symptoms persist or include persistent redness, blur, watering, light sensitivity or pain, contact an ophthalmologist.
This approach prioritizes free, reversible changes and reserves purchases for a specific remaining problem. It improves the conditions under which you work without treating any single accessory as a guaranteed cure for eye strain.
