To change models in Gemini, sign in at gemini.google.com, open the model control at the bottom of the prompt box, and select a model. On Android, tap the current model name in the same area. Choose Flash-Lite for quick everyday work, Flash for a general balance, and Pro for difficult reasoning, coding, or multimodal work when your account offers it. Gemini can also choose a model automatically.
Model names, plan eligibility, usage limits, thinking controls, and context windows change. Treat the figures and labels below as the configuration documented on October 13, 2026, and confirm your own account’s current options in Settings > Usage limits.

Gemini model choices at a glance
Google’s descriptions point to a task-based choice rather than a permanent winner. The models differ mainly in the amount of reasoning and capability they are intended to provide, how quickly they respond, how much usage they consume, and which accounts can select them.

This is a qualitative comparison based on Google’s product descriptions, not an independent accuracy or benchmark ranking. A harder task is a reason to try Pro, not a guarantee that every answer will be better.

Switch models on the web or a computer
Google’s computer instructions place the model picker in or immediately below the text box. You must be signed in to switch models.
- Open gemini.google.com in your browser and sign in to the Google account you want to use.
- Start a new chat or open the conversation in which you want to work.
- At the bottom of the chat box, click the current model name. Depending on the interface version, the label may appear inside or just beneath the prompt box.
- Choose Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, or another model that your account currently shows.
- Send your next prompt. The selected model applies to the conversation until you change it again or the interface changes the conversation’s selection.
If the model you expected is absent or has a lock icon, your account, country, plan, or the current rollout may not qualify for it. Do not assume that seeing a model in another account means it is available to yours.

Check which model answered a message
When the exact model matters, open the response details for the answer. The computer help instructions describe response details as the place to verify which model was used, particularly when automatic selection is enabled. This is useful for documenting a result, comparing two runs, or checking whether a locked or unavailable choice was silently replaced by another option.
Switch models in the Android app
Android exposes the picker from the current model control at the bottom of the chat box. Google documents the following path for both the Gemini app and Gemini in a mobile browser.

- Open the Gemini app or visit gemini.google.com on your Android device.
- Sign in with the account you intend to use.
- Open the conversation, then tap the selected model name at the bottom of the chat box.
- Tap the model you want to use.
- If the interface offers a thinking selector, choose Low, Medium, or High. If you do not choose a level, the documented default is Low.
- Send the prompt and, when necessary, open the response details to see the model and thinking information.
There are two important Android restrictions. First, Google says manual switching in Chat Mode and Task Mode requires a Google AI plan. Second, a higher-tier model shown with a lock requires an eligible plan. The exact plans and labels can change, so the lock state in your account is the reliable test.
Model and thinking choices persist in a conversation
Android documentation says Gemini retains the selected model and thinking level for the current conversation, including when you return to that conversation later. If you need a different setup for a new assignment, check the picker before sending the first prompt rather than assuming the app reset it.
What to expect on iPhone and iPad
The documented instructions available for this guide cover the computer interface and Android. They do not establish the exact iOS screen labels or tap sequence. On an iPhone or iPad, sign in and look for the model control around the prompt box, but do not rely on the Android steps as a promise that the screens are identical. If the control is missing, check the account’s plan and the current Gemini help documentation for iOS before troubleshooting the device.
Let Gemini choose automatically
Auto model selection is useful when the workload changes constantly. Gemini evaluates the prompt and routes it to a model and thinking level rather than keeping you on one manually selected option.
- Open Gemini and sign in.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Usage limits.
- Find the auto model-selection control and turn it on or off.
- Return to the chat and inspect response details when you need to confirm the route taken.
Use auto selection when speed and convenience matter more than controlling the exact model. Turn it off and select a model manually when you are reproducing a result, following a team procedure, estimating usage, or testing a prompt at a particular capability level. Automatic routing does not mean every prompt receives the same model or thinking depth.
Choose a model by the work you need to do
Use Flash-Lite for routine, speed-sensitive work
Flash-Lite is the sensible first choice for tasks where the requested transformation is clear and the cost of waiting or consuming extra usage outweighs deeper analysis. Examples include turning meeting notes into bullets, shortening an email, extracting dates from a short passage, generating brainstorming prompts, or explaining a familiar term in plain language.

Keep the request bounded: state the desired format, length, audience, and source material. If the answer is incomplete, you can move the same prompt to Flash or Pro rather than paying the higher usage cost for every easy request.
Use Flash for a broad mix of everyday tasks
Flash is the middle setting for users who want more reasoning than a speed-focused model while retaining a responsive general-purpose experience. It fits multi-step planning, comparing alternatives, drafting with several constraints, spreadsheet or text analysis of moderate complexity, and coding questions that need explanation as well as a proposed solution.
Choose Flash when you cannot predict whether a prompt will be trivial or moderately involved and you want one default model. It is also a practical escalation from Flash-Lite after a quick answer exposes an ambiguity, missed condition, or weak structure.
Use Pro for difficult reasoning and multimodal work
Pro is positioned for complex mathematics and coding, deeper understanding of long or complicated material, and work spanning text, files, images, and video. Select it when the prompt has interdependent constraints, requires several reasoning stages, or would be expensive to redo after a shallow first pass.
Plan for longer waits: Google cautions that Gemini 3 Pro prompts generally take longer than prompts sent to other models. Give Pro the complete context, define assumptions, and request an auditable output such as numbered calculations, test cases, a schema, or a list of unresolved assumptions. More capability does not remove the need to verify code, calculations, citations, or safety-critical advice.
Use Auto when the prompt mix is unpredictable
Auto is convenient for a personal chat containing both quick lookups and occasional difficult questions. It can reduce the need to watch the picker, but it also makes the exact model less predictable. If consistency matters, select the model yourself and record the choice with the prompt.

Think about the task before thinking level
On Android, Gemini can offer Low, Medium, or High thinking. The documented default when no level is selected is Low. Higher thinking levels can consume more usage, so reserve them for prompts that benefit from additional deliberation rather than switching them on reflexively.

- Medium: Use when the prompt has several conditions, requires comparison, or needs a small amount of planning.
- High: Consider for difficult mathematics, involved coding, or analysis where checking multiple steps is more important than response speed.
Thinking level and model are separate decisions. A high thinking setting on a lighter model is not the same choice as selecting Pro, and an advanced model may still need a clearly specified task. If a level is unavailable, the account or current mode may not support it.
Usage limits, plans, and context windows
Google states that advanced models and higher thinking levels consume more usage. Limits are account- and time-sensitive, so the Usage limits screen in your account is more authoritative than a fixed number in an article.
The plan page configuration documented for this guide listed the following context windows:

These are product-limit figures captured on October 13, 2026, not independent performance measurements or a promise of permanent allowances. Google can change model access, message limits, context windows, and plan names. A larger context window also does not guarantee that every detail in a very large file will receive equal attention; organize long material and point Gemini to the sections that matter.

When you are unsure, decide in this order:
- Estimate difficulty. Is the task a direct transformation, a general analysis, or a multi-stage problem with competing constraints?
- Estimate the cost of a weak first answer. For a disposable brainstorm, a fast model is usually adequate. For production code or a complex calculation, rework can cost more time than starting with Pro.
- Check the input type. If the assignment combines files, images, video, or a large body of text, confirm that your account and selected model support the required inputs.
- Choose a speed target. Flash-Lite favors quick responses; Pro may take longer; Flash sits between those purposes.
- Check usage before a long session. Open Settings > Usage limits and make sure the selected model and thinking level fit the remaining allowance.
- Verify the result. For consequential work, inspect response details, review calculations and code, and compare the output with the source material.
Worked examples
Summarizing a short article
Select Flash-Lite and ask for a specified number of bullets, the intended audience, and any facts that must be preserved. If the summary omits an important qualification, switch to Flash and repeat with the omitted passage called out.
Planning a multi-step project
Flash is a reasonable starting point when the plan has several constraints but does not involve advanced mathematics or a very large evidence set. Ask for dependencies, risks, assumptions, and a sequence of actions. Escalate to Pro if the plan requires reconciling many documents or evaluating technically difficult alternatives.
Debugging a substantial code change
Use Pro when the problem involves several interacting modules, non-obvious logic, or a large file set. Include the language version, error output, expected behavior, and a minimal reproduction. Ask for a diagnosis, a patch, and tests that would falsify the diagnosis. Check every suggested change locally; model selection is not a substitute for running the code.
Working with a large file collection
First confirm your plan’s context window and file limits. A larger window can reduce the need to split material, but you should still label files, explain their relationships, and ask Gemini to cite the file and section used for each conclusion. If the material exceeds the available context, process it in labeled batches and request a final synthesis that distinguishes direct evidence from inference.

Analyzing images or video
Choose a model and plan that expose the required multimodal inputs. Pro is Google’s stated choice for deeper understanding across text, files, images, and video, but availability can vary. Describe what to inspect, the time range or region of interest, and the output format instead of uploading material without a question.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective model switch
The model picker is not visible
- Confirm that you are signed in; switching is not available while signed out.
- On Android, verify that you are in a mode that supports manual switching and that your Google AI plan is eligible.
- Refresh the page or update the app, then reopen the conversation.
- Check Settings > Usage limits for account restrictions, rollout information, or automatic selection.
The model is listed but locked
A lock indicates that the current account does not meet the displayed eligibility requirement. Check the plan associated with the signed-in account and the current regional availability. Do not assume that changing browsers or reinstalling the app grants access.
The answer seems too slow
Pro and higher thinking levels can take longer. For a time-sensitive, low-risk request, switch to Flash or Flash-Lite, lower the thinking level where that control is available, and reduce unnecessary context. Keep Pro for work that benefits from its deeper capability.
The answer seems too shallow
Make the task explicit, supply missing source material, and state the constraints or success criteria. Then retry in Flash or Pro. A model change cannot compensate for an underspecified prompt, contradictory requirements, or missing data.
Auto selection used an unexpected model
Open response details to inspect the model used. If reproducibility matters, disable auto selection under Settings > Usage limits, choose a model manually, and keep that setting for the conversation.
A compact checklist before you send
- Am I signed in to the account whose plan and limits I intend to use?
- Is this a quick transformation, a general analysis, or a genuinely difficult reasoning task?
- Do I need text only, or files, images, or video?
- Would a slow or high-usage response be justified by the cost of rework?
- Should I choose a fixed model for repeatability, or let Auto route the prompt?
- Have I checked the current Usage limits view instead of relying on an old allowance?
- Will I verify the output independently if the result affects code, money, health, legal decisions, or other high-stakes work?
The simplest default is Flash-Lite for routine speed, Flash for mixed everyday work, and Pro for difficult or multimodal assignments. Use Auto when convenience matters more than a fixed model, and check response details whenever the exact route matters.
