If a game stopped working after a Proton change, you can choose a previously working stable Proton release for that game in Steam. Open the game’s Properties → Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select the stable version you want to try. This is a per-game setting, not a rollback for every game in your library.
Switch one game to a stable Proton version
- Close the game. In Steam, open your Library and select the affected game.
- Open its compatibility settings. Open the game’s Properties, then choose Compatibility. Steam Deck and desktop layouts may differ, but look for the same compatibility controls.
- Enable the version override. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a stable release. Select the stable Proton version that last worked, if it appears in the list. The available versions can vary.
- Launch the game and check it. If the issue remains, try another available version or consult current reports or support guidance for that specific game. There is no single version established as best for every title.
Valve documents the per-game compatibility selector and its settings; using it to choose an earlier version is a practical rollback, rather than a separately documented rollback procedure. See Valve’s Proton repository and Steam Support’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.

What the Proton release labels mean
If you are unsure which option to try, the channel labels describe different purposes and levels of testing. For a fallback after a game breaks, start with a numbered stable release that previously worked rather than assuming a testing channel is a safer choice.

| Proton option | Purpose and maturity | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | Numbered releases that go through extensive QA testing and a public release-candidate phase. | A stable release is the sensible starting point for returning to a known-working version. The Proton wiki gives “Proton 8.0-3” as an example label, not as a claim about the current release. |
| Experimental | For public testing of experimental features. | It is a testing channel, not another name for a stable release. |
| Hotfix | For targeted fixes for new or important games; intended to be short-lived. | It serves a specific fix-oriented purpose, rather than being a general stable fallback. |
| Bleeding Edge | Automated and untested. | Valve warns it can damage a game prefix or saves, so it is not a routine rollback choice. |

What to expect after forcing Proton
Steam may download the Windows version of a game if only its Linux version is installed when you force Proton. This is a possible download, not a guaranteed result for every title; Steam Support notes it in its compatibility troubleshooting guidance.
