To switch AirPods to an iPhone or iPad, open Now Playing, the Lock Screen, or Control Center and select your AirPods from the audio output list. On a Mac, choose them from the Bluetooth menu in the menu bar. You can also let supported AirPods switch automatically between compatible Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Switch AirPods manually
Keep your AirPods in your ears and near the device you want to use. Then choose them as the audio output on that device.

On iPhone or iPad
- Open Now Playing, the Lock Screen, or Control Center while audio is available.
- Tap the AirPods or audio-output control.
- Select your AirPods from the list.

On Mac
- Keep your AirPods in your ears and near the Mac.
- Click the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar.
- Select your AirPods.
Choose automatic or manual switching

Apple describes automatic switching when supported AirPods and Apple devices use the same Apple Account. For example, audio can move from music on a Mac to a podcast started on an iPhone, or an incoming call can move audio to iPhone. Requirements vary by AirPods model and operating-system version; Apple’s AirPods setup requirements and instructions specify the setup, including two-factor authentication. Check that page for your model and software versions rather than assuming every configuration supports automatic switching.

Return AirPods after an automatic switch
If AirPods move away from an iPhone or iPad, Apple says a “Moved to” notice may appear. Tap the return control in that notice to reconnect them to the device you were using.
Stop AirPods from switching automatically
On the device where you want to change the behavior, connect the AirPods and set their connection preference to “When Last Connected.” Apple provides the setting on iPhone and iPad as well as Mac.

- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your AirPods near the top of the screen. On Mac, open System Settings and select your AirPods.
- Find “Connect to This [device]” and choose “When Last Connected.”
The setting applies to the device where you change it. Repeat on another device if you want to adjust its behavior too. See Apple’s switching guide for the device-specific directions.

Pair them through Bluetooth if they are not available to select. Keep both AirPods in their case and use the case action for your specific model to enter pairing mode; Apple notes that the action differs between newer and other models.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Use the pairing control or action specified for your AirPods model.
- Under Nearby Devices, click Connect beside your AirPods.
