If they still don’t appear, check charging and macOS, retry the pairing sequence, and reset them only as a last resort.
Pair AirPods with your MacBook manually

On your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.

Put both AirPods in their charging case and open the lid. AirPods Max uses a different pairing procedure; follow Apple’s instructions for your exact model.

Put the AirPods into pairing mode. On specified newer case models, double-tap the front of the case. On other case models, press and hold the setup button on the back. In either case, wait for the status light to flash white.

On the Mac, find the AirPods under Nearby Devices and click Connect.
Apple’s Mac and Bluetooth setup instructions describe the model-specific pairing gestures and system requirements. Check the compatibility note there for your AirPods generation rather than assuming every model supports the same macOS versions.

If your AirPods still don’t appear
Check charging and update macOS
Confirm both AirPods are in the case and charging. Install the latest macOS update available for your Mac, then try pairing again. These basic checks are less disruptive than resetting the AirPods. See Apple’s AirPods connection troubleshooting steps.
Restart the pairing attempt

Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 15 seconds.

Open the lid, then use the pairing-mode gesture for your model and wait for the status light to flash white.

Return to System Settings > Bluetooth and check Nearby Devices.

Reset only if the simpler steps fail
If the AirPods still won’t connect, use Apple’s reset instructions for your exact model. Reset gestures differ by generation, so don’t assume one button sequence applies to every pair. If you forget or reset the AirPods, you’ll need to pair them again before using them.
If AirPods connect but Mac audio still comes from the speakers
A Bluetooth connection does not always mean the Mac has selected the AirPods for sound output. Open Control Center, choose the sound output control, and select your AirPods.

When an iPhone is already using the AirPods
If the AirPods were set up with an iPhone, Apple says they should connect automatically when the Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account. If they do not appear or connect automatically, pair them manually using the steps above. See Apple’s guidance on AirPods and the same Apple Account.
When to contact Apple Support
If the correct model-specific pairing gesture, charging checks, macOS update, retry, and reset do not help, these general steps cannot identify whether the cause is hardware, account configuration, or another device-specific issue. Contact Apple Support rather than guessing at the cause.
