To try another AI model in ChatGPT, use the model control in your existing conversation and choose an option available to your account. Staying in the same thread keeps its earlier messages visible. If your work also relies on project files or instructions, keep the chat in its Project and check that Project’s memory setting: thread history, Project context, saved memory, and account data are separate mechanisms.
Switch models inside the existing conversation
- Open the conversation you want to continue. Keep the original thread rather than starting an unrelated new chat.
- Check the model control. Select another model only if it appears as an available option in your current interface.
- Continue in that thread. Earlier messages remain part of the conversation, so you can keep working with the visible history.
OpenAI’s Projects in ChatGPT guidance says users can continue an existing chat without losing the original thread. Which models and controls appear can vary by plan, workspace, and rollout; the available picker in your account is the practical guide.

Keep files and instructions with Project work
A conversation transcript is not the same as the files and instructions associated with a Project. Projects organize chats, files, and instructions so related work can use that context. If an existing chat is eligible to move into a Project, moving it there lets it inherit the Project’s instructions and file context. See OpenAI’s Project guidance for current behavior.

Project memory affects which chats ChatGPT can reference. In Project settings, check whether the Project uses Default memory or Project-only memory. Project-only mode confines references to chats in that Project; it does not make that context available in an ordinary chat outside it. Shared Projects use Project-only memory. OpenAI notes that memory-setting changes can take a few hours to take effect. Details are in Projects in ChatGPT and the ChatGPT Business release notes.

Know what each kind of context preserves

If you are switching accounts or building with the API
Switching ChatGPT accounts
Treat the destination account as separate. The account switcher lets you use separate accounts; it does not move a conversation or merge files and memory. If you need information in the other account, provide the material you choose to share there yourself.
Using the API
Do not treat API retention as a ChatGPT interface feature. Your application should explicitly manage the conversation context it needs to send to each model call, and you should verify the current API storage controls and retention rules in the OpenAI Platform data controls documentation.
