Neither approach is universally better. Choose a model yourself when the workload is stable and you need predictable behavior, cost, or deterministic model selection. Consider runtime model routing when requests vary and a router can choose among an approved pool. The right choice depends on measured quality, cost, latency, reliability, and policy fit for your own traffic—not on a general promise that routing is better.
What is the difference?
With manual model selection, your application or configuration specifies which model handles a request. That makes the choice explicit and easier to reason about when requirements stay consistent. Microsoft’s guidance on choosing an AI model says this approach works well when workload requirements are stable, model behavior is well understood, and cost or performance is predictable.

With runtime model routing, a router chooses a model for each request from a configured or supported pool. That can suit traffic with different task types or difficulty levels, but the router cannot choose models outside its eligible pool, and its routing mode and policies affect the outcome. Microsoft describes these mechanics in its documentation on how model router works in Microsoft Foundry.
These choices do not have to be all-or-nothing: an application can route variable requests while sending critical or deterministic paths directly to an evaluated model.

Which approach fits your workload?
| Decision factor | Choose a model yourself | Use runtime model routing |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You specify the model in advance, which helps when a task needs a consistent, known selection. | The router selects at runtime from its configured pool; verify the eligible models and routing mode. |
| Request variability | Simple to operate when requests have similar requirements. | Can adapt model choice across varying requests, subject to its pool and policy. |
| Quality | Test the selected model against the workload’s acceptance criteria. | Test overall results and each important task category; routing itself does not guarantee quality. |
| Cost | Usage cost follows the selected model and its usage. | A router may balance cost with other targets, but measure actual costs, including retries or fallback where applicable. |
| Latency and reliability | Performance depends on the chosen deployment or provider. | Routing and fallback can affect response time and reliability; inspect tail latency, errors, and failover. |
| Governance | A fixed deployment can make deterministic selection easier to enforce. | Constrain eligible models, regions, and deployments to permitted choices, then verify the effective route. |
These are trade-offs to evaluate, not a scorecard with a universal winner. Microsoft recommends testing the configuration intended for production against workload requirements and retaining direct deployments where deterministic choice is needed.
How to compare them fairly
Microsoft’s model-router evaluation guidance provides a practical basis for comparing a direct-model baseline with a routing configuration:
Rank #2
- Set acceptance criteria. Define minimum quality, maximum acceptable cost, median and tail-latency limits, and policy constraints before comparing results.
- Build a representative prompt set. Include the real task categories and difficult cases your application handles. Keep the application configuration fixed so the model-selection strategy is the meaningful variable.
- Establish a direct-model baseline. Evaluate the model you would otherwise deploy, then compare it with the router configuration you expect to operate.
- Inspect category results, not only averages. An overall score can conceal a quality regression in a high-impact task category or slow requests in the latency tail.
- Change one routing lever at a time. For example, alter the routing mode or eligible-model subset, then repeat the same evaluation.
- Validate under production-like traffic. Observe quality, actual usage costs, latency under concurrency, errors, failover, selected-model distribution, and user or reviewer feedback.
- Keep the direct path where it has not been displaced safely. Use direct selection for deterministic tasks or cases where routing has not met your acceptance criteria. Reevaluate after material changes to traffic, available models, application behavior, routing settings, or prices.
Model routing is not provider routing
Model routing changes which model answers a request. Provider routing can keep the requested model the same while selecting among providers that serve it. The distinction matters because the routing rules and failure modes differ.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Router’s cross-provider routing documentation says provider preferences can account for cost or throughput as well as recent provider errors, timeouts, and session affinity. A provider-pinned model bypasses that preference, and a provider’s listed availability does not guarantee that every request will be served by it.

OpenRouter describes its own model router as weighting benchmark quality, time per task, and cost, with a default weighting of 60%, 20%, and 20%, respectively, in a post dated 2026-10-02. Those figures describe an OpenRouter-specific configuration, not an industry standard or evidence that routing will improve results for another workload. The post is OpenRouter’s Model Router Benchmarks announcement.

Official guidance offers evaluation criteria and methods, but it does not establish a universal head-to-head result. There is no basis here for promising a general percentage improvement in quality, savings, or latency from routing. Your representative workload and production-like measurements are the decision evidence.
