The rule depends on the exchange and account type: Binance’s cited instructions block a change while orders or positions are open, OKX says an open position cannot be switched, and Bybit’s Unified Trading Account (UTA) applies the setting account-wide and allows a switch only when specified checks pass. Confirm the rule for your exact account and contract before acting.
Can you switch an open futures position to isolated margin?
There is no exchange-wide answer. The instructions below apply to the named products and account types, not to every futures account or contract.

Platform rules and interface labels can change. Check the current official help page and the mode shown in your logged-in account before confirming a live trade.
How to change the setting, if your account allows it
Binance Futures
- Open the Futures trading interface and select the relevant contract.
- Click Cross at the top right, choose the desired margin mode, and confirm.
- Verify the mode on that contract. Binance’s cited page says the change is blocked if you have any open orders or positions; it does not describe this as a way to convert an active position.
The cited Binance support page is dated 2020-01-03; its search result reported an update on 2026-01-14. Because the page is old and the interface may differ, verify the current rule for your account.

Bybit Unified Trading Account
Bybit UTA’s mode selection is account-wide, so you cannot use it to assign a different mode independently to each trading pair. Before attempting a Cross/Portfolio-to-Isolated switch, Bybit lists these conditions:
- No options orders or positions.
- No Spot Margin orders, and Spot Margin is disabled.
- No existing borrowings.
- Enough eligible assets to cover the increased margin and allocate margin to positions without triggering liquidation after the switch.
- The mark price is not worse than the position’s post-switch liquidation price.
Bybit says Isolated mode disables Spot Margin, Auto Margin Replenishment, and collateral switching by default. Its UTA page was last updated 2026-06-23. Review the account’s confirmation details rather than treating this as a simple toggle.

- Open Trade > Futures.
- In the order panel, open the current margin-mode selector, choose Isolated, and confirm.
OKX’s instructions describe selecting a mode for trading and explicitly say opened positions cannot be switched between cross and isolated. The reviewed help text did not show a publication or update date.

What changes when you use cross or isolated margin?
Cross margin
Cross margin can share eligible collateral across positions, but the pool depends on the platform and account rules. Bybit UTA describes cross as a multiple-assets mode in which collateral assets are converted to USD value; Binance’s instructions describe sharing margin among contracts using the same asset type. Neither description means every asset in every wallet is available as collateral.

Bybit UTA’s comparison also distinguishes liquidation handling: it describes Cross in terms of an account maintenance-margin trigger, while Isolated positions are liquidated at the Mark Price. Treat those details as specific to Bybit UTA, not as universal exchange behavior.
Isolated margin
Isolated margin limits the assets assigned as margin to a position under the platform’s rules. Bybit says the maximum loss for an isolated position is limited to its initial margin plus any extra margin added. Under the cited contract rules, extra margin is not automatically drawn into that position, though a trader may add it manually. OKX likewise describes isolated margin as limiting a position’s margin to the assets being traded.

Isolated does not remove liquidation risk: a position can still be liquidated if its margin is insufficient. Bybit also warns that adjusting leverage resets extra margin previously added to a position.

- Identify the exact product. Check the exchange, account version (such as Bybit UTA), contract, and margin asset; rules may differ between them.
- Confirm whether an open position can change modes. Binance and OKX’s cited instructions say it cannot be changed with an open position; Bybit UTA describes a conditional account-level switch.
- Check blockers and collateral. Review open orders, borrowing, Spot Margin, and eligible collateral. Canceling orders or closing a position can have trading consequences, so do not do either solely to make a setting available without considering those consequences.
- Review the risk numbers. Before confirming, inspect margin allocation, leverage, the displayed liquidation price or account maintenance-margin trigger, and whether a leverage change affects added margin.
- Verify the result. Read the confirmation panel, then check the displayed mode for the exact contract or account.
Does an API setting mean you can switch a live position?
No. Bybit’s cited API endpoint is unsupported for UTA 2.0 and lists UTA 1.0 inverse and Classic linear/inverse products. It requires a symbol, a mode value, and equal buy and sell leverage values. Those API details do not establish that every account has a UI switch or that an open position can be converted. See Bybit’s API documentation.
