In Minecraft’s preview-stage Winter Drop, the safest plan is to avoid a Frostbite’s melee range, use leather armor to reduce freezing, and retreat if the fight turns against you. Frostbites can also attack with Ice Balls, so distance helps but does not make you safe. The game’s Freezing effect is a Minecraft mechanic, not real-world frostbite.
What Frostbites do
Frostbites are hostile zombie variants adapted to cold conditions. In Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3, they can spawn in Ice Caves alongside the cave’s ordinary mobs. They can attack in melee, applying Freezing, or throw Ice Balls at a distance. Their attack choice depends on how far away the target is and whether the Frostbite has Ice Balls.

An Ice Ball deals 4 damage to an entity it hits, with damage scaling down as the projectile loses velocity. Bedrock’s preview notes also describe the projectiles as causing knockback. The official Java notes assign Freezing to the Frostbite’s melee attack; they do not say an Ice Ball applies the effect.
How to survive a Frostbite encounter
- Keep out of melee range when you can. A close-range hit applies Freezing, so maintaining distance is a sensible tactical response. This is advice based on the documented attack pattern, not an official guarantee that distance alone will prevent damage.
- Wear leather armor if you expect freezing. Leather protects against freezing as it does in Powdered Snow. It does not stop a Frostbite from applying the Freezing effect, and it does not remove the effect once applied.
- Watch for Ice Balls even while keeping your distance. The ranged attack can deal damage and knockback. Do not assume that avoiding melee means the fight is over.
- Retreat if the encounter is going badly. Disengaging is general survival advice, not a documented Frostbite counter or guaranteed escape method.
What the Freezing effect does
The Java snapshot says affected players shake and eventually take damage. They also become frozen gradually, as if in Powdered Snow, for the duration of the effect. The notes do not establish a definitive cure or a guaranteed way to cancel Freezing, so do not rely on milk, fire, shields, potions, or a particular enchantment as a counter without current supporting information.

Where Frostbites spawn
The Ice Cave is a new cave biome that can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes. It consists mainly of Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles, occasional snow patches, ore pockets, and occasional Ice Crystals. Strays and Frostbites can spawn there in addition to mobs that normally appear in caves.
Frostbites can stand on Powder Snow and are immune to freezing; the Java notes say they are not slowed by either Freezing or Powder Snow. A Frostbite that stays underwater long enough transforms into a Zombie. Zombies and Husks inside Powder Snow transform into Frostbites.

Which versions include the feature?
The mechanics described here come from testing releases, not confirmation of a stable release. Java Snapshot 3 was published October 6, 2026. Bedrock Preview 26.60.29, published September 30, 2026, lists the features as experimental under “Drop 4 of 2026.” The Minecraft testing guide explains that snapshots and preview or beta builds are channels for testing an upcoming drop and sharing feedback.
Check the patch notes for your edition and current build before relying on a specific behavior: mechanics may change during testing, and Java and Bedrock notes are separate. The official Bedrock announcement is Minecraft Preview 26.60.29.
