Yes—friends can play Minecraft Java snapshots together if every player and the world or server use the same snapshot build. A dedicated server should run the server jar linked from that snapshot’s official release notes. Snapshot testing also has a separate Realms option for active subscribers, while Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s servers.
What has to match for snapshot multiplayer?
Snapshots are Java Edition testing versions. Each friend should select the same snapshot in the Minecraft Launcher, and the host should run a world or dedicated server on that build. For a dedicated server, use the server jar linked on the official release page for the snapshot you chose; Mojang labels it a cross-platform server jar. The current Minecraft Java Edition – 26.4 Snapshot 3 release notes explain enabling snapshots in the Launcher’s Installations tab and provide the server jar.

Do not assume a normal release or a different snapshot can join: the setup described here is for matching builds. Mojang does not provide a general cross-version compatibility matrix in those notes, so compare the exact version labels rather than relying on a broad compatibility rule.
Choose how to host the world
Dedicated Java snapshot server
- In the Minecraft Launcher, open Installations and enable snapshots.
- Create or select an installation for the snapshot build you want to use.
- Download the server jar linked from that same snapshot’s official release notes and run the server with it.
- Have every player launch that exact snapshot build and connect to the server.
This route means someone in the group operates the dedicated server. The official notes establish the matching snapshot jar, but do not verify third-party hosting providers or their support for particular snapshots.

Snapshot Realm
Mojang announced that active Realms subscribers can create a free Snapshot Realm for snapshots, prereleases, and release candidates. It is separate from the subscriber’s regular Realm, so snapshot testing takes place in its own space. See the Snapshot 23w41a announcement for that feature. Because availability details can change, check the current in-game Realms interface before planning a session around it.
Java and Bedrock are not interchangeable
Before investigating a version mismatch, confirm that everyone is playing Java Edition. Under Mojang’s official edition setup, Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer servers and cannot play together. A Java snapshot server therefore is not a way for a Bedrock player to join the session. Mojang explains the distinction in its Java or Bedrock Edition guide.

Fix a failed connection in this order
- Check editions: everyone must be on Java Edition for a Java snapshot session.
- Compare exact client labels: check the snapshot selected in each player’s Launcher installation.
- Check the server build: make sure the dedicated server is running the jar associated with that same snapshot release.
- Check the Realm type: if using Realms, make sure friends are joining the Snapshot Realm rather than the regular Realm.
- Then check ordinary connectivity: confirm the server is available and that players have network access to it.
Protect your regular Minecraft worlds
Snapshots are testing versions, not a risk-free way to open a long-running world. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds and recommends backing them up or running snapshots in a folder separate from main worlds. Before opening a valuable world, make a backup or keep snapshot saves isolated. The warning appears in the official 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes.
