How to Support Someone Whose Intimate Images Were Shared Without Consent

Believe them, tell them it was not their fault, and ask what would help right now. Offer to stay with them or help with a next step, but let them decide whether to preserve evidence, report content, contact a support service, or wait. Making or sharing an image privately never means consenting to its distribution.

What do I say to someone whose nudes were leaked?

Keep your first response calm and focused on the person, not the image. You might say: “I’m sorry this happened. I believe you. You didn’t cause this. What would feel most helpful right now? I can stay with you, help report it, or find someone trained to support you.”

Do not ask why they made or sent the image, why they trusted someone, or whether they can show it to you. Do not forward or repost it, even to prove what happened. Ask permission before taking practical steps, and respect their choice not to report immediately unless there is an immediate safety emergency.

The FBI’s sextortion guidance puts responsibility plainly: “You are not the one who is breaking the law.”

How can I help someone get intimate photos taken down?

Offer to help with the task they choose. They may want you to sit beside them while they report a post, record details, or contact a support service; they may instead want company without taking action yet. A trusted friend can help document and report, according to RAINN.

  1. Check what feels safe. Ask whether anyone is threatening them, demanding money or more images, or may have access to their accounts or devices. If someone else can see their device or messages, agree on a safer way to communicate before saving or sending anything.
  2. Preserve details if they want to. They can record the post’s URL, account name or username, date and time, threats, payment demands, and any earlier reports. Screenshots of posts or messages may also help if it is safe to take them. Keep records somewhere secure. Do not copy, send, or store the intimate image yourself; details about the post and the messages can often be recorded without redistributing it.
  3. Report each post where it appears. Use the reporting route on the service hosting each occurrence. The route may differ by platform and may depend on having an account. RAINN’s reporting guidance includes examples of platform routes; check the service’s own current instructions when making a report.
  4. Keep track of what happens. If they submit a report, they can save its confirmation or case number and note the date. This may help if they later need to follow up or make a complaint.

In the United States, FTC guidance says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and remove the reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request. If a covered platform misses that deadline or has no working reporting process, the person can file a complaint with the FTC through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a U.S. process, not a worldwide deadline or guarantee that every copy will be removed.

What can StopNCII do, and when should they use Take It Down?

The right service depends on the person’s age when the image was made, not just their age now. The person depicted starts the case themselves; you can offer to stay with them while they do it.

Image was made when the person depicted was… Service to consider What it does
An adult StopNCII A free global service that creates a digital fingerprint, or hash, of the image and shares it with participating companies to help identify matching content. The image itself is not shared by the tool.
Under 18 NCMEC’s Take It Down The appropriate route for an image made when the depicted person was under 18, even if they are now an adult.

Hashing is a way to help participating services detect matching files; it is not a universal removal service. Its reach depends on which services participate and what they scan. RAINN notes that most encrypted messaging services are not covered, and edited or AI-altered versions may need separate hashes. Hashing an ordinary photo also cannot prevent someone from using it to make a new deepfake. Platform reports and human support still serve different purposes.

What if they’re being blackmailed?

If someone is demanding money, more images, or another action in exchange for not sharing an image, avoid blaming the person or promising that a particular response will guarantee safety. Ask what they need to feel safer and whether there is an immediate danger. If threats or extortion are involved, they can preserve messages if it is safe, report the account or content, and seek trusted local specialist or law-enforcement support.

The FBI warns against paying a person or business offering help for a fee or valuables: such offers may be another attempt to victimize them. Do not hire a “recovery” or hacking service or promise that one can erase every copy.

Should I report it to the police?

Do not pressure them to contact police. Reporting may be one option, but the appropriate route and likely process depend on where they are and what happened. If they want to consider it, offer to help them find a local specialist or law-enforcement contact, or go with them. If someone is in immediate danger, prioritize urgent local emergency help.

Rules differ by jurisdiction. In the United States, the FTC describes the 48-hour removal process for covered platforms and accepts complaints when a platform does not comply or lacks a working process. In the UK, a government factsheet updated 30 September 2026 describes Crime and Policing Act 2026 duties for regulated platforms to remove qualifying content within 48 hours of a valid report made by or on behalf of the person depicted; the duties apply only when the content meets the relevant offence definition and the report is valid, and Ofcom oversees compliance. Neither country’s rules should be assumed to apply elsewhere. Check current local law and services.

Where can they get confidential or specialist support?

Offer options without taking over. They can contact a service themselves, or ask you to stay with them while they call, text, or use a chat service. In the United States, the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), live chat at thehotline.org, and text “START” to 88788. It also lists NCMEC support at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

RAINN describes its National Sexual Assault Hotline as free, confidential, and available 24/7/365. RAINN can provide information and support, but it cannot remove images. The FTC complaint process is for reporting platform non-compliance; it is not the same as direct takedown help or crisis support. Check each organization’s current contact details and local eligibility.
