For an occasional builder, the easiest system is to keep each set’s spare pieces in its own labeled bag or compartment and store the instruction booklet with it—or in a nearby file or box labeled with the set name or number. For a larger loose collection, sort pieces by set, type, size, or color and use containers that keep those groups separate. Keep LEGO bricks dry, away from heat and direct sunlight, and below 104°F (40°C).
Choose a system that fits how you use your LEGO
LEGO says the right way to store bricks depends on how they are sorted and how large the collection is. Common approaches are sorting by set, color, size, or type. There is no single format that suits every collection: prioritize keeping a set’s pieces together if you rebuild it as a complete model, or sorting by type or size if you often search for a particular part.

- A few sets or occasional rebuilding: Keep each set’s spare pieces in a small labeled bag or compartment. Put the booklet in the same container or in a nearby labeled file or box.
- Many sets kept intact: Use separate labeled bags or compartments for each set, then group those containers in a clear storage bin, craft box, or drawer.
- A large shared parts collection: Sort by type, size, or color when that makes parts easier for you to locate. Use dividers, drawers, or labeled containers to keep categories from mixing.
These are practical ways to apply LEGO’s suggested sorting methods, not tested rankings of storage systems. An existing household container can be enough; choose one that fits your shelf or drawer space and keeps the groups easy to retrieve.
Pick containers that keep small pieces contained
LEGO lists clear storage bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks, and minifigure display cases as popular options. For loose spare parts, small compartments or labeled bags help prevent one set’s pieces from becoming mixed with another’s. A divided craft organizer or small-parts box can hold several labeled groups; a larger bin can hold the smaller containers together.

For booklets, use a labeled file, binder, or box, or keep each booklet with its set. Match the container to the booklet’s dimensions and how often you handle it. The cited LEGO storage guidance addresses bricks, not paper preservation, so it does not establish a particular sleeve material or humidity target for instruction booklets.
Protect bricks from heat, sunlight, and moisture
LEGO recommends storing bricks somewhere dry and away from heat. The company says direct sunlight or temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may cause bricks to become brittle or discolored over time. Keep containers out of direct sun and away from heat sources; avoid storing bricks in places that regularly become hot.

LEGO does not prescribe one storage container as mandatory. Its guidance is to choose a practical format for your sorting system while keeping bricks dry and away from heat.

LEGO’s US customer-service page says building instructions for thousands of sets, old and new, can be downloaded. It does not say that every historical booklet is available. A downloaded instruction file can serve as a reference if a paper booklet is misplaced; keep the paper copy with the set or in your labeled manual file if you want both.

Set up the system in a few steps
- Choose what you want to retrieve. If you usually rebuild whole models, group spare pieces by set. If you search for individual parts, sort by type, size, or color.
- Separate the spares. Put each set’s small pieces in its own labeled bag or compartment, or place categorized parts in divided containers.
- Match the booklet to the set. Store it with the pieces or in a nearby file or box labeled with the same set name or number.
- Choose an outer container. Use a clear bin, craft box, drawer, or another suitable container to keep the labeled groups together and accessible.
- Choose a dry, shaded location. Keep bricks away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and below 104°F (40°C).
- Add a digital reference if useful. Check LEGO’s US building-instructions page for a downloadable manual for your set.
If a piece or booklet is missing
LEGO’s US customer-service page provides routes for missing bricks, broken bricks, building instructions, and replacement parts. Use those support options if organizing what you have does not solve the problem.
