You can keep buying, borrowing, collecting, and reading physical books while using a Kindle for other titles or situations. Treat print and Kindle editions as separate choices: keep print where ownership, lending, collecting, or the page itself matters to you, and use Kindle when portability, convenience, or digital reading features fit better.
Choose the format for each book, not for your whole reading life
There is no need to choose between being a print reader and a Kindle reader. A useful approach is to decide book by book, based on how you want to use it.

- Keep in print: favorites you want on a shelf, illustrated or reference books, signed editions, and books you expect to lend.
- Read on Kindle: titles that suit travel, limited shelf space, or the convenience of carrying many books in one device.
- Borrow digitally: library ebooks when your library, the title, and the loan’s reading options support Kindle.
These are practical choices, not a ranking: the right format depends on what matters to you for that particular book.
Buy the print edition through the bookseller you want to support
For a physical copy, buying directly from a local bookstore is one straightforward way to support that shop. If you prefer to order online while directing a purchase through a participating independent bookstore, Bookshop.org says shoppers can use its bookstore finder to select a shop and place the order through that bookstore’s storefront: find a bookstore to support.

Bookshop.org describes separate affiliate arrangements for bookstores and non-bookstore affiliates; its affiliate program information explains the model. In either case, check that you are buying the print edition you want. A Bookshop.org print purchase does not send a book to your Kindle.
Do not assume one edition includes the other
A paperback or hardcover purchase and a Kindle book purchase are separate unless the specific seller or listing explicitly says they are bundled. Amazon says that Kindle books and physical items can be combined in one cart when shopping on its website in a browser; that is a checkout convenience, not evidence that buying one edition includes the other. See Amazon Customer Service’s Kindle purchasing help.

To get both editions, check the print and Kindle listings and their prices before placing an order. Amazon’s help also explains that Kindle books can be purchased in a browser and delivered to a Kindle device or app: buy and deliver Kindle books.
Use library ebooks as a complement to print
Many public libraries let members borrow ebooks and send them to Kindle, according to About Amazon’s guide to reading library books on Kindle. A digital library loan is limited to its borrowing period, and whether you can read a particular title on Kindle depends on your library’s service, the title’s availability, and the loan’s supported reading options. Check those details in the specific loan before choosing it.

Check Kindle listings for accessibility details
If accessibility features affect how you read, review the Kindle book’s listing rather than assuming every digital edition offers the same support. Amazon says listings may identify accessibility-related navigation and audio or video features. Availability and behavior depend on both the title and the device or app; consult Amazon’s information about Kindle book accessibility features and the listing for the edition you plan to use.

Do not assume every Kindle purchase can be downloaded as a transferable file or read outside Kindle apps and devices. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing’s guidance says DRM-protected books are limited to Kindle apps and devices. It also describes EPUB and PDF downloads for certain eligible non-DRM books published after December 9, 2025. That is a publishing option for eligible titles, not a general promise about every Kindle book you buy. See Kindle Direct Publishing’s DRM and download guidance.
