Repeatedly moving files, copying values into forms, or converting documents can eat up time. Windows 11 includes Power Automate for desktop, a built-in tool for creating automations called desktop flows. It can help take repetitive steps off your hands—but it automates work; it does not make your processor faster or improve PC benchmark scores.
What Power Automate for desktop does
Microsoft says Windows 11 includes the Power Automate for desktop app. In it, you can build a desktop flow by adding prebuilt actions or recording mouse and keyboard activity. The action-based designer gives you explicit steps to assemble; a recording captures a sequence as a starting point. Neither approach guarantees that a flow will keep working unchanged if an app or website changes.

Microsoft’s examples include extracting website prices into Excel, filling forms, organizing or backing up files, and converting files. These are possible workflows, not guarantees that every website or application will behave reliably with automation. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 getting-started guide and its introduction to desktop flows.

- Open the app. Select Start, search for Power Automate, and open Power Automate for desktop.
- Create a flow. In the app, start a new desktop flow and give it a name that describes its task.
- Choose how to build it. Add actions from the designer for a step-by-step workflow, or use the recorder to capture mouse and keyboard activity. Review the resulting actions rather than assuming a recording is ready to run unattended.
- Test on a reversible task. Run the flow manually on a small sample, check its actions and results, and adjust it before using it on important files or accounts.
For example, a file-organizing flow might identify files matching a pattern and move them into a chosen folder. Confirm the source, destination, and matching criteria carefully; a mistaken move or broad match can affect more files than intended.

Run a flow manually or launch it another way
Start by running a tested flow from Power Automate for desktop. If you want another launch method, Microsoft documents desktop shortcuts and run URLs, as well as scheduling a flow with Windows Task Scheduler.
| Launch method | When it fits | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Run in Power Automate for desktop | Testing or starting a flow yourself | Only one flow can run in local attended mode at a time, according to Microsoft’s run guidance. |
| Desktop shortcut | Convenient access from the desktop | Microsoft’s documented external-launch scenario requires the app to be installed, the user to be signed in, and a Power Automate Premium plan or access to a pay-as-you-go environment. |
| Run URL | Invoking a flow through a URL-based launch | The same documented prerequisites apply. Confirmation is enabled by default for external launches. |
| Windows Task Scheduler | Starting a flow on a schedule | Follow Microsoft’s documented setup; test the flow and its launch behavior before relying on a schedule. |
External launches show a confirmation prompt by default. Microsoft warns that disabling it can create security risks because a questionable flow shared by a malicious actor could run without notice. Keep confirmation enabled unless you have a clear reason to change it and understand what can invoke the flow. For details, see Microsoft’s instructions for URLs and shortcuts.

Windows 11 edition and system requirements
Windows 11 Home users can create desktop flows and monitor them in the Power Automate portal, but Microsoft says Home does not support triggering desktop flows from the cloud. That is distinct from creating and running a flow locally.
Microsoft’s 2026 requirements documentation lists the following for a single-user session with Power Automate for desktop open. These figures exclude the resources required by the applications used in a flow:

| Requirement | Processor | Storage | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1.00 GHz or faster, two or more cores | 1 GB | 2 GB RAM |
| Recommended | 1.60 GHz or faster, two or more cores | 2 GB | 4 GB RAM |
These are app requirements, not evidence that automation speeds up Windows. How quickly a flow completes also depends on the work and the applications it uses. Microsoft’s full prerequisites and limitations document provides further details.

Power Automate for desktop is useful when a task repeats and its steps can be expressed as actions or captured input. It may reduce manual repetition, but Microsoft’s cited material does not establish a measured time saving or a universal reliability rate. Start with a small workflow, inspect what it does, and choose the launch method that suits how much control you want.
