Algolia announced on October 6, 2026, that it acquired Velou, a New York-based company that uses AI to turn product images and catalog text into structured retail data. Algolia plans to use that product intelligence across search, recommendations, personalization, merchandising, and Agent Studio. The announcement does not disclose the deal’s financial terms or a detailed rollout schedule.
Why Algolia says product catalogs need more intelligence
Search systems can only match shoppers to products using information they can interpret. Algolia describes a common catalog problem: product data arrives from suppliers in inconsistent formats and may omit details shoppers use to narrow a search. Its example is a shopper looking for a “machine-washable navy midi dress for a fall wedding” when the catalog describes the item only as a “blue dress.” The item may be in stock, but the record does not expose enough information to make it easy to find.

Algolia says merchandisers often compensate with synonyms, manual tags, redirects, boosts, and other rules. That account frames the problem behind the acquisition; it is not an independently measured finding about all retailers. Algolia CEO Stephen Lynch summarized the company’s approach this way: “Behavior tells us what shoppers do. Retrieval intelligence tells us what they mean. Velou helps us understand what the product actually is.”

Velou analyzes product text and imagery to identify or infer characteristics, then organizes them against retail-specific taxonomies. The resulting structured attributes, categories, values, synonyms, and product relationships can be used by search, filters, recommendations, and AI shopping agents. [Algolia’s acquisition announcement]
For example, image analysis may identify a garment’s sleeve type, neckline, material, or color, while text analysis may extract missing details from a product description. An earlier Algolia explainer described batch enrichment as one possible integration approach and showed a basic product record gaining tags and a category. That provides technical context, but it does not establish the packaging or implementation method Algolia will offer after the acquisition. [Algolia’s earlier Velou integration explainer]
Algolia says enriched attributes will carry evidence and that enrichment is designed to continue as catalogs change. The stated goal is to help teams see why an attribute was assigned and avoid treating an unsupported guess as fact. This is a vendor description of the design; the announcement does not provide an independent accuracy assessment.
Where Algolia plans to use the product data
The acquisition is positioned as a shared product-data layer for several Algolia offerings, rather than a standalone search feature. Algolia says Velou’s intelligence is intended to support:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search: match detailed, long-tail queries to products whose catalog records expose the relevant characteristics.
- Facets and merchandising: make attributes such as fabric or occasion available for filters and merchandising decisions.
- Recommendations and personalization: give these systems a richer description of products than basic titles and categories alone.
- AI shopping experiences: provide agents with structured product information they can use to interpret requests and present relevant options.
These are Algolia’s intended benefits, not independently measured outcomes across retailers. The company says the capability should work through existing Algolia integrations without requiring a rebuild, but it has not published a detailed availability or rollout schedule in the announcement. Retailers should confirm current product availability and implementation requirements with Algolia.

Agent Studio offers useful context for the agent use case. In July 2026, Algolia described it as supporting governed conversational discovery across search, chat, and mobile, grounded in product data, reviews, inventory, pricing, and merchandising logic. That product announcement does not establish that every Agent Studio deployment already uses Velou. [Algolia’s Agent Studio announcement]
Algolia also announced a separate January 2026 collaboration with Microsoft to provide enriched product attributes, availability, and pricing in Copilot, Bing Shopping, and Edge. The cited collaboration announcement does not say it is powered by Velou or explain how the acquisition affects it. [Algolia’s Microsoft collaboration announcement]

What the reported retailer examples show—and do not show
Algolia cites two retailer examples to illustrate the potential of catalog enrichment. Both are vendor-reported case examples; the announcement does not establish that Velou alone caused the commercial results, provide a control group, or show that other retailers should expect comparable outcomes.

| Retailer example | Algolia-reported catalog change | Algolia-reported commercial result |
|---|---|---|
| Get The Label | More than 190,000 product attributes added over six months | Revenue from site search rose 60% during the cited period |
| Everything5pounds | Catalog attributes grew by more than 85% | Search conversions rose 33% |
Algolia explicitly says it will not promise those figures to every customer. They are examples of reported results, not a benchmark or a guarantee.
What retailers should verify before evaluating the acquisition
The announcement explains the product thesis but does not provide a third-party comparison of vendors or a full implementation specification. Retail teams considering the capability can use these questions to assess whether it addresses their needs:
- Can the system normalize attributes to the taxonomy your merchandising and category teams actually use?
- Can staff inspect the evidence behind generated attributes and correct questionable values?
- How do enriched records flow into search, filters, recommendations, merchandising tools, and agents?
- What setup, data access, review processes, availability, and commercial terms apply to your Algolia products?
- How will your team measure impact on query relevance, filter use, product discovery, and conversion without assuming the cited case results will recur?
Published materials for the announcement do not disclose financial terms, an independent acquisition confirmation, or a detailed rollout timetable. The practical significance will depend on how Algolia makes the capability available and how well it fits each retailer’s catalog and operating processes.
