Use Claude to create questions and clarify difficult ideas, but try to answer from memory before you ask it for help. Then check its explanations against your course materials and revisit missed concepts in later study sessions. This approach puts established learning techniques—practice testing and spaced review—at the center, with Claude as an aid rather than an answer key.
Why this workflow puts your memory first
Claude can help make practice questions, explain concepts, create study guides or flashcards, and organize course materials. Anthropic also describes a Learning mode designed to guide reasoning through questions and concepts in Projects. Those are descriptions of available features and intended use, not independent evidence that studying with Claude improves grades or learning outcomes. Access and interface details may depend on your account, institution, and current product configuration.

The learning strategy behind the workflow has a separate evidence base. A 2013 review by Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan, and Willingham evaluated ten commonly used learning techniques and rated practice testing and distributed practice highly. Practice testing means trying to retrieve information rather than simply rereading it; distributed practice means returning to material across sessions rather than concentrating all review in one block. The review notes that effectiveness can depend on the learner, material, and assessment conditions, so these methods are useful strategies, not guarantees of a particular result.

That distinction matters: evidence for retrieval and spaced practice does not establish that Claude itself causes better learning. The aim is to use Claude to make those study habits easier to carry out while you remain responsible for understanding and checking the material.

Set up a source-grounded study session
Gather the material you are expected to learn
Start with the syllabus, lecture notes, assigned readings, textbook excerpts, or instructor-provided materials. If Projects are available to your account, Anthropic documents them as workspaces for related chats, uploaded knowledge, and instructions. You can keep a course’s materials and study chats together there. Project capacity and plan details can vary, so do not assume every account has the same limits.
Give Claude a narrow instruction. For example: “Use the course materials I provide for course-specific claims. If a point is not supported by those materials, say so. Distinguish what the sources state from your inference. Ask me one question at a time, and do not show the answer until I have attempted it.” This reduces the chance of drifting away from the class material, but it does not guarantee that every response will be correct.

Ask for a diagnostic quiz, not just a summary
Ask Claude to identify the main concepts in your materials and make a short quiz that tests them. Request a mix of explanation, application, comparison, and problem-solving questions where those match the subject. A quiz made only of term recognition may not prepare you for an exam that asks you to explain a process or solve a new problem.

You might prompt: “Make six questions from these notes: two that ask me to explain a concept, two that ask me to apply it to a new example, and two that compare related ideas. Ask one question at a time. Wait for my answer before giving feedback, and point to the relevant course source when possible.” Treat the questions as practice prompts, not as a definitive prediction of what will appear on an exam.

Use the answer-first study loop
- Attempt the question without help. Hide the answer and try to explain, solve, or recall the material from memory. Write it down or say it aloud. If you are unsure, record that uncertainty rather than looking up the answer immediately.
- Compare your attempt with the course source. Check the notes, reading, textbook, or instructor material. Mark what was correct, what was missing, and what you could not retrieve. Claude’s response can help you locate a gap, but your assigned sources are the authority for what the course teaches.
- Ask for a hint or a clearer explanation of the gap. Give Claude the question and your attempted answer. Ask it to identify the specific missing idea, offer a hint, or explain the concept more simply, using the supplied material where possible. Generated explanations can be wrong or incomplete, so verify factual claims against the source before relying on them.
- Close the explanation and retrieve again. Put the response away and explain the concept in your own words, or solve a fresh version of the problem. If you can only follow Claude’s explanation while it is visible, you have not yet shown that you can recall or apply the idea independently.
- Make a new prompt from the miss. Ask Claude for another question about the point you missed, ideally one that tests the same idea in a different way. This checks whether you can use the concept rather than recognize a repeated answer.
- Return to the topic in a later session. Schedule another attempt instead of doing all your review at once. Choose the interval according to the exam date and how well you can recall the material; the reviewed evidence does not establish one ideal schedule for every student or subject.
Make the review fit the assessment
Use the kind of thinking your class will actually assess. If the exam requires written explanations, practice producing them without seeing a model answer. If it involves calculations, solve problems on your own before asking for a step-by-step explanation. For comparison questions, state the meaningful differences and support them with course material. When feasible, practice under conditions similar to the assessment, while continuing to follow instructor guidance.
Claude can help create additional practice, but it cannot establish what your instructor will test or replace the assigned materials. Keep time for readings, notes, and instructor-provided practice. Do not treat a generated quiz or answer as an authoritative exam key.

When a simple flashcard method is enough
You do not need a particular app to practice retrieval over time. Blank index cards work: put a question or cue on one side and an answer or explanation on the other. Try to recall the answer before turning the card over, then bring difficult cards back in later sessions. Claude can help draft prompts, but you can also write them yourself from lecture notes. The evidence supports the learning techniques, not a particular card brand or tool.

Protect accuracy and academic integrity
- Verify before memorizing. Check Claude’s explanations and generated answers against the course reading, notes, textbook, or instructor material. Do not turn an unsupported or incorrect answer into a flashcard.
- Follow your institution and instructor’s rules. Policies differ. Anthropic’s university guidance tells students to follow their institution’s academic-integrity expectations and not use Claude to complete work they are expected to do independently.
- Keep practice separate from submitted work when required. Using a tool to quiz yourself is not a blanket exemption from course rules. If an assignment requires independent work or restricts AI assistance, follow those requirements.
- Check access and current features. Anthropic’s education guidance notes that university policies and customizations may apply, and product features can change. Confirm what is available to your account before building a workflow around a specific mode.
