Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe reliable way to watch your DVD and Blu-ray collection on TVs, phones, tablets and computers is to read each disc on a computer, create media files, place those files in a home media-server library, and use a client app on each screen. You are not streaming the physical disc directly: the server delivers a file, and the client either plays it as-is or asks the server to convert it.
A computer with the right optical drive, storage, server software and client apps is the basic setup. The best file format depends on whether you value preserving the original streams, saving storage, or maximizing direct playback. Disc images and full disc folders are poor cross-device targets, so plan around ordinary video files.

What the setup actually does
A disc-based streaming system has four stages:
- Read: an optical drive reads the DVD or Blu-ray on a computer.
- Prepare: you either remux the existing streams into a modern container or transcode them into a new file.
- Catalog: the resulting files go into a stable folder structure that your media server scans.
- Play: an app on a TV, phone, tablet or computer requests the title from the server.
The server may provide the original file unchanged (direct play), repackage compatible streams into another container (direct stream), or re-encode the video and/or audio (transcoding). Which path is used can change from one screen to another.
What you need before starting
A computer and optical drive
Your computer needs an optical drive that reads the format you own. A DVD drive is not sufficient for Blu-ray discs. If the computer has no internal drive, an external Blu-ray drive is a practical option; match its disc-format support and operating-system compatibility to your collection. Ordinary Blu-ray support does not establish UHD Blu-ray ripping capability, so treat UHD discs as a separate compatibility question.

HandBrake lists DVD and Blu-ray among its source types, but its documentation says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection. Protected disc folders cannot simply be copied with ordinary tools without additional software. Read the supported-source documentation and the project’s overview before choosing a workflow.
Storage
Use a local disk, external drive, NAS or another high-capacity storage device that can hold the files you create and a backup of anything you cannot replace. The required capacity depends on how many discs you have and whether you preserve original streams or create smaller encodes; no single capacity figure fits every collection. A NAS can also host the server, although server requirements rise when several people connect at once or when clients need transcoding.
Media-server software and client apps
Install one server application on an everyday computer, dedicated computer or compatible NAS. Plex identifies all three as possible server platforms and notes that multiple users and transcoding can require more capable hardware in its requirements guidance. Install the corresponding client app on each screen you intend to use, then test the actual devices rather than assuming that a file that plays on one screen will direct-play everywhere.

Choose a file strategy: preserve or convert
Remuxing: preserve the streams, change the container
A remux places existing video, audio and subtitle streams into a different container without re-encoding those streams. Jellyfin recommends remuxing disc images to MKV, or extracting them to VIDEO_TS or BDMV folders, for its Movies library. This approach can retain the source streams, chapters and multiple audio or subtitle tracks when the tools and source permit it. Because the streams are not re-encoded, remuxing is not a quality-improvement step and does not guarantee that every client will play the result directly.

Transcoding: create a new encode
HandBrake is a transcoder that can create MP4, MKV or WebM outputs. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes the video, and may also convert audio or subtitles. It can produce a file that more devices understand, but the result is a new encode rather than a bit-for-bit copy of the disc streams. The consulted documentation does not establish a universal quality, size or speed difference, so judge each preset and device combination on its own merits.
| Choice | What changes | Useful when | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remux to MKV | Container changes; streams normally remain intact | You want to preserve source streams while avoiding a disc image | No guarantee of direct play on every client |
| Extract VIDEO_TS or BDMV | Disc folders are retained instead of one image file | Your server supports those folder structures | Cross-device menu and playback behavior varies |
| Transcode to MP4, MKV or WebM | Video and possibly audio are re-encoded | You need a new file aimed at broader device compatibility | No universal quality, size or performance result |
| Keep ISO or IMG | Whole-disc image remains intact | Archival use where your chosen software explicitly supports it | Not a dependable playback target for common client apps |
Why disc images and menus are a trap for “any screen”
Full DVD and Blu-ray structures are designed for disc-aware players, not universal streaming clients. Plex states that its apps do not support ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS or BDMV structures and recommends converting them to common media formats in its disc-image support article. Jellyfin’s Movies documentation lists common files such as MP4 and MKV, supports VIDEO_TS and BDMV folders, and marks disc-image support as unsupported while recommending an MKV remux or extracted folders: Jellyfin Movies documentation.
That does not mean every menu, bonus feature or angle will survive a conversion. Decide whether the main feature, chapters, subtitles and alternate audio are what you need. If interactive menus are essential, retain the original disc separately; do not assume a phone or smart-TV app will reproduce the disc-player experience.
Prepare the discs on a computer
- Confirm the drive: verify that the drive reads DVD, Blu-ray or both, and that your operating system recognizes it.
- Insert one disc and inspect it: determine whether the software can open the source. HandBrake’s documentation explains that it does not bypass copy protection.
- Choose a target: select an MKV remux, VIDEO_TS/BDMV folder where supported, or a transcoded MP4, MKV or WebM file.
- Keep the title identifiable: record the movie name, release year when needed to distinguish titles, and any disc or edition detail you want in the filename.
- Process a test disc: use one representative title first. Check the video, every required audio track, subtitles, chapters and forced-subtitle behavior before processing the rest.
- Store the result outside the optical drive: copy it to the library disk, then eject the disc only after the file has been checked.
HandBrake’s source documentation is the right place to verify supported input types and its About page states: “HandBrake does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” The software’s caution also says not to copy material you do not own or have the right to copy.

Organize a library the server can identify
Use a stable folder hierarchy
Create one top-level Movies folder and give each film its own folder. Use a consistent movie title and, where needed, a year to separate similarly named releases. Keep the video file inside that folder and use the server’s documented naming conventions. Jellyfin’s Movies guide provides its current organization and naming guidance.
A practical pattern is:
Movies/Title (Year)/Title (Year).mkv
If you retain multiple versions, label them clearly rather than leaving several generically named files in one directory. Keep extras in a way your server documents, or store archival disc images outside the playback library so unsupported files do not confuse scans.
Add the folder as a Movies library
- Open the server’s administration dashboard.
- Create a library whose content type is Movies.
- Choose the top-level Movies folder as the library path.
- Save the library and start a scan.
- Open several entries and correct any title, year or artwork matches before adding the rest of the collection.
If a title is misidentified, fixing the folder and filename is usually more durable than repeatedly editing metadata by hand. Keep the physical discs as your source archive until the digital copy has been checked.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make each screen play the file
Direct play
Direct play is the least demanding path: the client can handle the file’s container, bitrate, codecs, resolution, audio and selected subtitles, so the server sends the media without changing it. Plex explains these requirements in its Direct Play and Direct Stream guide.
Direct stream
If the streams are suitable but the container is not, the server may repackage them without re-encoding. This can use fewer resources than a full transcode, but it still depends on what the client accepts.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Transcoding
When the client cannot handle the source, the server converts it during playback. Plex’s streaming overview describes this behavior. Transcoding can be triggered by an unsupported codec, resolution, bitrate, audio format or subtitle format. A subtitle that the client cannot render may force the server to burn it into the video, which is a transcode.

Test procedure
- Open the same movie on the TV, phone, tablet and computer.
- Start with subtitles off, then test each subtitle track you expect to use.
- Check the server’s playback or activity panel to see whether the session is direct play, direct stream or transcoding.
- Repeat over the network conditions in which you normally watch, including any remote connection you have legitimately configured.
- If a device transcodes unexpectedly, test another file from the same disc to determine whether the issue is the container, a stream, subtitles or the device itself.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server sees no movie
- Confirm the library path points to the folder that actually contains the movie directories.
- Check spelling, year formatting and file extensions against the server’s naming guide.
- Run a manual library scan after moving or renaming files.
- Keep unsupported ISO or IMG images out of a library intended for ordinary playback.
The movie appears but will not start
- Play a known-good MP4 or MKV test file to separate a server problem from a source-file problem.
- Check whether the client supports the file’s container, codecs, resolution and audio.
- Try another subtitle track or disable subtitles temporarily; an unsupported subtitle format can force transcoding or prevent playback.
- Review the server activity panel for an error or a failed transcode.
The TV plays it but the phone does not
Compatibility is client-specific. A television may direct-play a file that a phone cannot decode, or the phone may impose a lower supported resolution or bitrate. Use a converted file aimed at the least capable device, or ensure the server has enough capacity to transcode when that phone requests playback.
Playback pauses or buffers
- Determine whether the session is direct play, direct stream or transcoding.
- If transcoding is active, test a file that the client can direct-play and compare the result.
- Reduce simultaneous sessions or move the server to more capable hardware if several users require transcoding.
- Check the storage and network path for the server and client before changing the source files.
Preserve an archive and a playback copy
For irreplaceable discs, keep the original physical media and a verified digital copy. A preservation-oriented remux can retain source streams, while a playback-oriented transcode can be selected for devices that do not handle those streams. These are separate goals: an archive copy is not automatically the most compatible streaming copy, and a small, broadly compatible encode is not automatically a full-fidelity replacement.
After creating a file, watch several minutes at the beginning, middle and end; test chapter jumps; select every needed audio and subtitle track; and confirm that the server identifies the correct title. Only then process the rest of the collection using the same naming and quality decisions.

Software behavior and legal permission are different questions. HandBrake says it does not circumvent copy protection and cautions users not to copy material they do not own or have the right to copy. Laws governing personal copies, format shifting, backups and circumvention differ by country and can include exceptions or restrictions. Do not treat a software feature as proof that a particular copy is lawful where you live; consult current, jurisdiction-specific guidance if the legal status matters.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Need the simplest path across many devices? Start with a common MP4 or MKV playback file and test it on every client.
- Want to retain original streams? Remux to MKV where appropriate, while accepting that some clients will still transcode.
- Need disc folders? Jellyfin documents VIDEO_TS and BDMV support, but Plex apps do not support those structures; verify the server and client combination before committing.
- Want full menus? Keep the physical disc or an archive copy; do not rely on menus working in a phone or TV client.
- Have several simultaneous viewers? Choose server hardware and storage with transcoding demand in mind; exact requirements depend on the number of users and the source files.
- Buying a drive? Match DVD/Blu-ray/UHD capability and operating-system support to the discs you actually own.
