Google Wallet does not sync every pass in the same way. Google lists loyalty and gift cards, event tickets, and boarding passes as items saved to your Google Account; after you sign in, they can appear on multiple devices. Payment cards, transit passes, identity credentials, badges, keys and private passes may instead be tied to one device and require a supported transfer, backup restore or manual re-addition. A factory reset removes Wallet data from that phone, so check each important pass before you erase or replace the device.
What “saved” means in Google Wallet
Wallet uses two different relationships: an item can be connected to your Google Account, or it can be connected primarily to a particular device. Those relationships determine whether signing in on another phone is enough, whether a transfer tool is required, and whether the issuer must add the item again.

Google’s current help guidance names loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes as account-connected examples. These passes can be stored on multiple devices. When you install Wallet on a replacement phone and sign in to the same Google Account, those listed items can return without a manual move. Google presents these as examples rather than a promise that every issuer’s version of every pass behaves identically. Availability can change with the issuer, country, device and Wallet version.

Google’s examples include payment cards, transit passes, mobile driver’s licenses, ID passes, student IDs, corporate badges, digital car keys, residential keys and private passes. “Not automatic” does not mean “cannot be moved”; it means the item needs the method that Google and the issuer support.

Which Wallet items come back automatically?
| Wallet item or group | What Google says about storage | What to expect on another phone |
|---|---|---|
| Loyalty cards | Listed as Google Account-saved; eligible cards can be stored on multiple devices. | Sign in to the same account. If the issuer or pass is not eligible, use the issuer’s add flow. |
| Gift cards | Listed as Google Account-saved; eligible cards can be stored on multiple devices. | They may reappear after sign-in. Verify balances and barcodes with the issuer before relying on them. |
| Event tickets | Listed as Google Account-saved; eligible tickets can be stored on multiple devices. | They may return after sign-in, subject to event and issuer support. |
| Boarding passes | Listed as Google Account-saved; eligible passes can be stored on multiple devices. | They may return after sign-in. Keep the airline’s confirmation available if the pass is time-sensitive. |
| Payment cards | Google lists these among items that do not automatically follow account sign-in. | Use Wallet’s supported transfer or restore process, then complete any bank verification. |
| Transit passes | Some are device-bound and may be limited to one device at a time. | Use Wallet’s move/transfer option where available; stored value may require a backup step. |
| IDs, licenses and student IDs | Listed as items that may not automatically appear after sign-in. | Follow the issuer or government enrollment process on the new device. |
| Corporate badges and private passes | Listed as items that may be tied to a device or issuer account. | Contact the organization or re-add through its supported provisioning process. |
| Digital car or residential keys | Listed as device-connected examples. | Use the manufacturer or property’s supported transfer and re-enrollment procedure. |
The table reflects Google’s named examples, not an exhaustive list for every issuer or region. A pass’s label in Wallet does not by itself tell you whether the issuer permits multi-device use.
How to move Wallet content to a new phone
Google describes three broad recovery routes: device-to-device transfer, restoration from a Google Account backup, and manual removal and re-addition. The route is selected by the item, issuer and device platform, not by a single universal “sync all” switch.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Keep the old phone available
Do not erase the old phone until you have opened every important pass on the replacement. Keep it charged, connected to the internet and signed in. For device-bound items, the old phone may be required to authorize a move.
2. Set up Wallet on the replacement
- Install or open Google Wallet on the new phone.
- Sign in with the Google Account that held the Wallet items.
- Allow the phone to finish any account or backup restoration before judging what is missing.
- Open Wallet and check account-saved loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes.
3. Use Wallet’s transfer option for supported items
For a card or pass that does not appear, open its details in Wallet and look for a move, transfer or restore instruction. Google’s available path varies by item. Some transit passes can be moved inside Wallet; some single-device items require removal from the old phone before they can be added to the new one.
4. Re-add anything not restored
Use the original issuer app, email, website or enrollment process for items still missing. Payment cards may require a one-time verification from the bank. Identity documents, workplace badges, keys and private passes often require the issuing organization to approve the new device.

5. Confirm function, not just appearance
Open the barcode or tap-to-pay screen, check the pass name and expiration, and confirm that stored value or access permissions are present. A pass thumbnail returning to Wallet is not proof that an issuer has transferred its balance or authorization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens after a factory reset?
Google says a factory reset deletes Wallet data from that device. Account-connected items can return when you sign in, and most other items can be restored through supported device-to-device or cloud methods. Anything not covered by those methods must be added again manually. The reset does not create a universal cloud copy of every card, key or credential.
Before you reset
- Write down which passes are essential for travel, payments, transport, work, school, building entry or vehicle access.
- Check each item on the replacement phone or in the issuer’s account before erasing the old phone.
- Move supported transit passes and confirm their stored value. On Android 15 and later, Google says the phone displays a reminder to back up transit passes with stored value before a factory reset.
- Make sure you know the Google Account credentials and any bank, employer, school, transport or vehicle-app credentials needed for re-enrollment.
- Keep boarding-pass confirmations, ticket emails and issuer recovery codes available offline if you will travel during the changeover.
After the reset
- Complete Android setup and sign in to the same Google Account.
- Open Wallet and wait for account-saved passes to populate.
- Restore or transfer device-bound items using the option shown for each item.
- Re-add missing items through their issuer, then test payment, transport, entry or identification functions before leaving the old-device recovery period.
Google’s reset and transfer instructions are in its Wallet transfer help page. The exact screens can differ by Android release, issuer and country.
Transit passes are a special case
Google says a transit pass can be saved to only one device at a time. That is why a transit card should not be treated like a loyalty card that simply appears on every signed-in phone. For supported systems, open Wallet on the old phone, choose the transit pass and use the move or transfer control, then complete the instructions on the new phone. Some systems also require a backup of stored value before reset.
If the move control is absent, do not delete the old pass first. Check the transit operator’s instructions and confirm whether the pass is eligible in your location. A pass may be tied to the operator’s account, the device’s secure hardware or a one-device rule.
Can Gmail save passes into Wallet?
Google Wallet can automatically save supported information from Gmail, but this is an import feature rather than a guarantee that every Wallet item will transfer between phones. To enable it:

- In your Google Account, enable Gmail smart features in other Google products.
- In Google Wallet, turn on Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail.
- When a supported ticket, boarding pass, loyalty card or receipt arrives, Wallet can save the relevant pass.
Turning off the Wallet setting prevents future Gmail passes from being saved. Google says items already saved remain in Wallet even if the related email is later deleted. If a pass is missing after a phone change, search the original email and use the issuer’s add-to-Wallet action instead of assuming the message deletion caused the loss. Settings may be presented differently as Google rolls features out.
Google documents these controls in Manage items in Google Wallet.
What can appear on a Wear OS watch?
Eligible loyalty cards, gift cards and tickets added on a phone may automatically become available on a synced Wear OS watch. Google’s cited help page lists Wear OS 3.5 or newer and Wallet app version 23.46.x or above as requirements; treat those versions as time-sensitive because Google can change support.
Recommended Free Tools
- The watch must be paired and synced with the phone.
- An internet or mobile-data connection may be needed for a pass to appear.
- Expired passes do not appear.
- Some private passes, such as health-insurance cards, are phone-only.
If a pass is visible on the phone but not the watch, update the watch and Wallet app, confirm the pass is eligible and unexpired, check connectivity, and allow synchronization to complete. A payment card, private credential or physical-access pass should not be assumed to work on the watch simply because it works on the phone. See Use passes with Google Wallet on your smartwatch for Google’s current requirements.
Why issuer and location matter
Wallet is a platform, but the issuer controls much of a pass’s eligibility and lifecycle. Google warns that features differ by country or region and directs users to item- and issuer-specific support. A bank may require verification for a payment card; a transit operator may enforce one-device storage; an employer may need to provision a badge; and a vehicle or property provider may require a fresh key enrollment.
When a pass is missing, check three places in this order: the Wallet item’s details, the issuer’s official app or account, and Google’s regional information for that item. Google’s overview is available at Where to find more info about items. Do not infer worldwide availability from instructions that apply to another country.

Linked and recommended passes
Google says issuers may link related non-private passes, such as a boarding pass with an event ticket, loyalty card, gift card or offer. Users cannot create these links themselves, and not every issuer supports them. Payment cards, private passes and physical-access passes are excluded from linked-pass grouping.
A linked pass is a convenience relationship, not a separate backup system. If the underlying issuer removes, expires or restricts a pass, the related recommendation can disappear. Details are in About linked & recommended passes in Google Wallet.
Privacy and personalization settings
Google provides controls for Gmail auto-save, use of passes across Google services and use of Wallet information for personalization or advertising. The cited privacy guidance says some controls are rolling out gradually and that private passes are handled differently. These settings govern saving, sharing or personalization behavior; they do not determine whether a technically device-bound card can be transferred to a new phone.
Review the controls shown in your own Wallet app rather than relying on an older screenshot or assuming every account has the same options. Google’s current explanation is Manage data & privacy in Google Wallet.
Troubleshooting missing passes
The pass was account-saved but is not visible
- Confirm that the new phone uses the same Google Account, not merely the same Gmail address in a different account profile.
- Update Wallet and Android, then reopen Wallet after synchronization finishes.
- Check whether the pass expired, was cancelled or was removed by the issuer.
- Search the original email or issuer app for an add-to-Wallet option.
A payment card will not transfer
Use the bank’s verification process and Wallet’s supported restore or add-card flow. A card may be represented by a device-specific token, so the new phone can require fresh authorization even when the underlying bank account is unchanged.

A transit pass still exists on the old phone
Do not factory-reset or wipe the old device until the operator’s move process is complete. Transit passes can be one-device items, and stored value may need the Android 15-or-later backup reminder or another operator-approved recovery method.
Best Value
A watch cannot show a phone pass
Check Wear OS and Wallet versions, pairing, network access, expiration status and whether the pass is private or otherwise ineligible. The watch feature applies to eligible passes, not every item stored on the phone.
A practical pre-replacement checklist
- Account check: Identify loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes that should return after sign-in.
- Device check: Mark payment cards, transit passes, IDs, badges, keys and private passes for individual transfer or re-enrollment.
- Issuer check: Open the bank, transport, employer, school, vehicle or property app and read its new-device instructions.
- Backup check: Complete any Wallet or Android backup prompt, especially for transit value.
- Test check: Verify a barcode, tap, ticket, balance or access credential on the new phone before wiping the old one.
The safest rule is simple: treat account-saved passes as recoverable after sign-in, but treat every device-connected item as requiring an explicit transfer or issuer confirmation until you have tested it.
Frequently asked questions
Does signing in to Google Wallet copy all my cards?
No. Google specifically lists loyalty and gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes as account-saved examples. Payment cards, transit passes, IDs, badges, keys and private passes may need another recovery path.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

No. Google says a pass already saved in Wallet remains even if the related email is deleted. Disabling Gmail auto-save only stops future supported messages from being saved.
Can I use the same pass on two phones?
Google says the listed account-saved examples can be stored on multiple devices. Other items, especially transit passes and device credentials, may be restricted to one device or governed by issuer rules.
Why did a pass return on my phone but not my watch?
Watch availability is limited to eligible, unexpired passes and depends on pairing, connectivity, Wear OS and Wallet versions. Private passes and some other categories are phone-only.
Where should I look if a pass is unavailable in my country?
