How to Stream Xbox Games to a Handheld or Phone

Use Xbox Remote Play in a supported browser to stream games installed on your console to a phone. Here are the setup steps, requirements, and handheld compatibility caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play games installed on your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One on a phone, use Xbox Remote Play in a supported browser at xbox.com/remoteplay. Enable remote features on the console, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox profile, and connect a supported Bluetooth controller. Xbox currently lists Android 6.0+, iOS 15.1+, and a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or mobile data at 10 Mbps down.

What you need for Xbox Remote Play

  • An Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled.
  • A phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or later, or iOS 15.1 or later, and a supported web browser.
  • The Microsoft account associated with your Xbox profile.
  • A supported Bluetooth controller for mobile play. Xbox names the Xbox Wireless Controller and Backbone One among the options.
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed; that guidance is not a guarantee of a particular picture quality or response time.

These requirements are from Xbox’s Remote Play page, accessed October 7, 2026. Mobile data charges may apply. Some games or online multiplayer may require a separate Xbox Game Pass subscription, but Xbox does not state that every Remote Play session requires one.

Set up Remote Play on a phone

  1. Enable remote features on your console. Use the Xbox console’s remote-features settings before attempting to connect. Xbox’s Remote Play page lists Series X|S and Xbox One as supported console families.
  2. Connect a controller. Pair a supported Bluetooth controller with your phone. Xbox names its Xbox Wireless Controller and Backbone One. Backbone One is an option for compatible USB-C iPhones and Android phones; confirm the connector and exact phone model before buying.
  3. Open the browser page. On the phone, go to xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser.
  4. Sign in. Use the Microsoft account connected to the Xbox profile you want to play.
  5. Choose the console and start playing. Remote Play streams games installed on that console. For best results, use a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection; if using mobile data, consider your plan’s data limits and charges.

Xbox announced browser-based mobile access on April 16, 2025, and said Remote Play would no longer be available directly from the Xbox mobile app. The browser is therefore the route to use: Xbox Wire’s announcement.

Using a handheld: check the play mode first

Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming are different services. Remote Play sends a stream from your own console and its installed games. Cloud Gaming streams eligible games from Xbox’s service. A handheld being listed for Cloud Gaming does not, by itself, establish that it supports Remote Play.

Xbox’s December 19, 2025 Cloud Gaming guide names the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, Logitech G Cloud, and Razer Edge among handhelds for cloud gaming, and describes Steam Deck support as beta. Those are Cloud Gaming references, not a blanket Remote Play compatibility list. For Remote Play, check whether your particular handheld supports a suitable browser and test the browser-based Remote Play flow on that device. Xbox describes Remote Play as available on browser-supported devices, but does not establish universal compatibility for every handheld or browser.

Remote Play versus Cloud Gaming

Question Remote Play Cloud Gaming
Where does the game run? On your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One; the game must be installed on your console. On Xbox’s service, for eligible cloud games.
What is the mobile setup? Enable console remote features, then use a supported browser at xbox.com/remoteplay and a supported controller. Use a device and access method supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming; Remote Play setup instructions do not apply.
What network figure does Xbox state? Xbox’s Remote Play page lists 10 Mbps down and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Xbox Wire’s December 2025 guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming.
Which games can you play? Games installed on your own console, subject to game-specific requirements. Eligible games available through the cloud service.

The cloud-gaming speed recommendation is not a Remote Play requirement. For Cloud Gaming details and its device guidance, see Xbox Wire’s December 2025 guide.

If Remote Play does not work

  • The console does not appear: Confirm remote features are enabled and that you signed in with the Microsoft account linked to the console’s Xbox profile.
  • The browser page will not run: Check that the phone’s operating system and browser are supported, then try the browser flow at xbox.com/remoteplay. Handheld compatibility can vary.
  • You cannot control the game: Pair a supported Bluetooth controller. Xbox’s mobile instructions do not establish that touch controls replace the controller requirement.
  • Play is laggy or the image is poor: Check the connection and, where possible, switch to stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox’s listed 10 Mbps down is guidance, not a performance guarantee; network conditions can affect the result.
  • You are asked about a subscription: Requirements can depend on the game or online multiplayer. Do not assume that Remote Play itself always requires Game Pass.
