How to Stream Variable Frame Rate Video to YouTube with FFmpeg

A practical guide to pacing VFR files with FFmpeg, choosing output synchronization deliberately, matching YouTube’s encoding guidance, and diagnosing stream issues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a variable-frame-rate (VFR) file to YouTube with FFmpeg, pace the file in real time with -re, then choose an output synchronization mode based on whether you want to preserve its irregular timing or convert it to a fixed frame rate. Those are separate decisions: -re does not convert VFR to constant frame rate (CFR).

The command below is an untested starting point, not a guaranteed recipe. FFmpeg options depend on your installed build, and YouTube’s ingest guidance can change. Verify both before going live.

Choose whether to preserve VFR or convert to CFR

Variable frame rate means the intervals between frames can vary. A file’s nominal frame-rate label does not necessarily describe every frame interval. Before choosing FFmpeg options, decide whether the YouTube output should preserve the source’s irregular timing or use a fixed cadence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Preserve source timing: use an output synchronization mode intended to pass through the source cadence, and avoid adding a fixed output -r or an fps filter without a specific reason.
  • Convert to fixed cadence: choose a target frame rate and deliberately configure an output synchronization mode or filter that duplicates or drops frames as needed. That conversion is distinct from pacing the input.

FFmpeg’s documentation change record describes -fps_mode[:stream_specifier] as an output, per-stream video synchronization/framerate setting and marks -vsync as deprecated. The record dates to June 2022, so confirm supported syntax and values in your installed build rather than relying on examples written for another version. FFmpeg project documentation change record.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Check your FFmpeg build and input

  1. Record the version and available options. Run ffmpeg -version, then inspect the installed CLI with ffmpeg -h full. Confirm that it supports the option and value you intend to use, such as -fps_mode:v passthrough.
  2. Inspect the input streams and timestamps. Check its video and audio streams and examine timestamps rather than assuming a nominal frame-rate label means every frame has the same interval. Confirm the file has the streams you plan to map.
  3. Check build capabilities. Verify that the selected encoder and RTMPS protocol are available in this FFmpeg build. Availability depends on how it was built.
  4. Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the ingest URL and stream key shown for your stream. Keep the key private. Use RTMPS when it is available; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Use real-time pacing for a file input

FFmpeg documents -re as an input option that reads at the input’s native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It is useful when sending file-based media in real time; it does not make a VFR file constant frame rate. Place it before the input it applies to.

Do not blindly use -re for a real-time capture device or an already-live source. Verify pacing guidance for that source type and your FFmpeg build; the available documentation cited here does not establish a current, universal rule for every capture input. Start with this illustrative command

This example maps the first video stream and, if present, an audio stream. It uses H.264 video, AAC audio, the FLV output container, and a passthrough output mode to illustrate a preserve-cadence approach. It deliberately does not set a fixed output frame rate or bitrate. The command has not been tested against your file, FFmpeg build, encoder configuration, network, or YouTube ingest settings.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map '0:a?'
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -fps_mode:v passthrough
  -c:a aac
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"

Replace input.mp4 with your file path. Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY to the URL and key supplied for your YouTube stream, following the format shown in Live Control Room. Verify that your FFmpeg build accepts the quoted optional audio mapping and passthrough mode. If your goal is CFR output, choose a target cadence and configure conversion deliberately rather than copying the passthrough choice.

Configure encoder rate control and keyframe interval for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity you select. YouTube’s current guidance calls for constant bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. These settings are not fully specified by the illustrative command; check your encoder’s supported options and the current YouTube guidance before adding them. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Match encoding settings to YouTube’s current guidance

YouTube’s Live encoder page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube-published recommendations and may change; select only the matching row for your intended output.

Test and monitor the stream

  1. Send a representative preflight stream. Include motion and audio similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live with similar audio and movement.
  2. Watch Live Control Room stream health. Check its messages during the test and the event. Treat warnings as evidence to investigate, not as automatic proof that the frame-rate mode is wrong.
  3. Check for format mismatches. Compare your actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and protocol with the current ingest guidance and the settings selected in YouTube.

YouTube’s advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube Live encoder settings.

Troubleshoot stutter, drift, or ingest warnings

  • FFmpeg rejects -fps_mode or its value: check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h full. Use only syntax supported by that build; old examples using -vsync may be version-sensitive because the FFmpeg project documentation change marks it deprecated.
  • The output cadence changes unexpectedly: look for an output -r, an fps filter, or a synchronization mode that duplicates or drops frames. Decide whether to preserve source timestamps or convert to a fixed cadence before changing options.
  • Video stutters or audio drifts: distinguish timestamp and frame-pacing issues from encoder overload, insufficient upload capacity, codec mismatch, or YouTube stream-health warnings. Change one relevant setting at a time and test again.
  • YouTube reports an ingest or quality problem: verify the URL and key from Live Control Room, then compare protocol, codec, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current page. Do not expose your stream key.
  • The command cannot find an encoder or protocol: inspect the installed FFmpeg build and select an encoder/protocol it actually includes, or use a build that supports your chosen configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud
