To stream to YouTube with a custom RTMP ingest URL, copy the exact Stream URL and separate stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room into your encoder. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it, start the encoder, and wait for YouTube’s preview before taking a scheduled stream live.
Find the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab, then create a stream or select the scheduled stream you want to use. Check its title, visibility, and schedule before continuing; privacy defaults can vary by age, and you can change stream privacy.
- In the stream details, copy the value shown in Stream URL. In your encoder, paste it into the field named Server, Destination, or RTMP server.
- Copy the separate Stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. If your encoder offers a YouTube destination preset, choose it and enter the key if prompted; the preset may handle destination selection for you.
Use the URL YouTube displays for the specific stream or protocol you selected. Do not substitute a generic example URL. YouTube describes the setup as entering its Live server URL and stream key into the encoder (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it
RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL to encrypt the connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, use the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS destination, then copy that exact value into your encoder. The URL shown by default may be ordinary RTMP, so check the protocol rather than assuming it is secure. Your encoder must support RTMPS.

Set encoder video and audio settings
Match the encoder to your source video and connection. YouTube’s published values below are recommendations, not independent measurements; its current requirements and recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before a production stream.

These figures are from YouTube Help, current as checked October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication date. The examples are specifically for H.264 at the listed resolution and frame rate. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test with representative motion and audio. YouTube’s general setup guidance covers both software and hardware encoders and says expensive equipment is not required to get started (YouTube live streaming tips for computer).

Start the encoder and take the stream live
- Start streaming from the encoder. Keep Live Control Room open and wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear.
- Review the preview and stream-health messages. For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself complete the scheduled-stream go-live step.
- When finished, stop the stream through YouTube and stop the encoder as directed by the workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Protect the stream key
YouTube treats the stream key like a password paired with an address. Do not include it in public screenshots, recordings, or logs. A custom key can be useful when you want to reuse a key. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio under Create > Go Live > Stream, then replace the old key in the encoder before streaming again. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. Details are in Manage live stream settings.

Troubleshoot connection and preview problems
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the destination URL and key were copied from the correct stream and pasted into the right fields. Look for missing characters or spaces, and confirm the encoder is set to the same protocol as the URL.
- RTMPS reports an SSL or certificate error: Confirm that you copied the RTMPS URL using the lock icon, that the host is the one shown in Live Control Room, and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube says port 443 may need to be specified. Its troubleshooting example uses an address in the form
rtmps://...:443/...; this is illustrative only. Use the actual host and path YouTube shows, not the example. - YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm the encoder is actively sending, the destination and key belong to the selected stream, and the connection has not failed. Review the encoder’s connection status and Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before taking a scheduled stream live.
- The stream appears soft, unstable, or drops frames: Compare the configured resolution and bitrate with YouTube’s current table and your available upload bandwidth. Test the same motion and audio you expect in the real stream; a setting that works for a static screen may not suit fast-moving video.
- The old key no longer works: If the key was reset, update the encoder with the newly issued key. A previous key will not be the credential to use after replacement.
