To cast Wowza Streaming Engine video to a Chromecast, serve the stream—typically as HLS—and play it through a Cast-enabled player such as Wowza Flowplayer’s Chromecast integration. The player page must use HTTPS, and the Chromecast receiver and sender must be on the same local network and within range. Wowza serves the media; the player integration supplies the casting control.
What you need before you start
- A Wowza Streaming Engine stream with a working playback URL.
- A browser-based player with Chromecast support, such as Wowza Flowplayer with its Chromecast plugin.
- A player page served over HTTPS.
- A Chromecast or other Cast receiver powered on, reachable, and on the same local network as the device opening the player page.
HLS is a practical browser-player route. Wowza describes HLS as segmented adaptive-bitrate delivery over HTTP and documents H.264 video and AAC-family audio support for its HLS packetizer. That does not guarantee compatibility with every receiver or player: confirm that the actual output codecs and segment format are supported by the target receiver.

1. Confirm the Wowza playback URL
A Wowza playback URL is built from the protocol, server address, port, application, and stream name. Wowza’s example HLS URL is http://example.com:1935/myApplication/myStream/playlist.m3u8. Replace the example host, application, and stream name with your deployment’s values. The playback page was updated July 22, 2026: Wowza Streaming Engine playback documentation.
For secure playback, use the SSL certificate hostname and port 443. Test that the playlist and its media segments are reachable before adding casting; the receiver must also be able to fetch the playlist and segments from its network.

2. Add Chromecast support to the player
Wowza Flowplayer documents a Chromecast plugin that adds casting support to video. Its integration loads the Flowplayer core player and the Chromecast plugin, then configures the chromecast namespace. Configuration includes a receiver application identifier and HLS audio and video segment-format fields. Follow the plugin’s current setup instructions for the exact script loading and configuration syntax: Flowplayer Chromecast plugin documentation.
The plugin documentation describes stable and canary receiver application options. You can also set the application ID of a custom Google-registered Cast receiver, but Wowza cautions that not all features may be available with a custom receiver. Choose the built-in option unless you specifically need custom receiver behavior and can validate it with your stream.

3. Serve the player page securely
Host the page containing the player over HTTPS. Flowplayer says an insecure website will not show the Cast icon, and Wowza’s support guidance also requires SSL protection for casting. If the page is HTTPS but the embedded video URL is HTTP, the browser may block it as mixed content; use HTTPS playback as well. See Wowza Streaming Engine troubleshooting guidance.

4. Check network access and ports
The sender and Cast receiver need to be on the same local network, and the receiver must be in range. Also allow the ports used by your particular deployment through the host firewall, cloud security group, and any network controls:

- TCP 443: HTTPS and SSL/TLS streaming; Wowza also specifies port 443 for secure playback.
- TCP 1935: Wowza’s default streaming port, used in its playback URL example.
Do not open every port automatically: permit the ports your playback configuration actually uses. Wowza’s technical specifications were updated July 15, 2026: Wowza Streaming Engine technical specifications.
5. Start playback and cast
- Open the HTTPS player page on a device connected to the same local network as the Cast receiver.
- Start the Wowza stream in the player and confirm that local playback works.
- Select the player’s Cast icon and choose the available receiver.
- If casting starts but playback fails, check the receiver’s access to the full HLS playlist and every referenced segment, then verify the codec and segment-format settings against the selected receiver.
Choose a receiver integration
| Approach | What it involves | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Flowplayer Chromecast plugin | Use Flowplayer with its documented Chromecast plugin and configure its receiver application and HLS segment formats. | The documented route avoids building a custom receiver, though the player page still needs the integration configured. |
| Custom Cast receiver | Register a Google Cast receiver application and configure the player with its application ID. | Offers control over receiver behavior, but Wowza warns that not all plugin features may be available with a custom application. |
Troubleshooting
The Cast icon does not appear
- Confirm the player page uses HTTPS; insecure pages do not show the Cast icon.
- Make sure a Cast receiver is powered on, in range, and on the same local network as the sender.
- Confirm the page is using a player integration with Cast support and that its plugin configuration has loaded.
The player works on the computer, but casting fails
- Check that the receiver can reach the complete HLS playlist and all segment URLs. A playlist that works only from the sender’s network path may fail on the receiver.
- Verify the stream’s codecs and HLS segment-format configuration against the receiver and player. Wowza’s HLS support for H.264 and AAC-family audio does not establish universal receiver compatibility.
- If using a custom receiver, test its supported features; the plugin documentation warns that some features may not be available.
A secure page cannot load the video
Use an HTTPS playback URL when the player page is HTTPS. An HTTP media URL embedded in a secure page can be blocked as mixed content. For secure Wowza playback, use the SSL certificate hostname and port 443.

The custom receiver behaves differently from the built-in option
Check the custom receiver’s application ID and supported playback features, then compare with a documented stable or canary receiver application. Not all features are guaranteed with a custom application.
