The right method depends on your phone, the TV’s capabilities and whether you want the whole screen or just a video on the TV.
Choose the streaming method that fits your phone and TV
| Method | What appears on the TV | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Smart View | Your phone screen is mirrored. | A compatible Galaxy phone and a TV that supports Miracast or Smart View. Samsung recommends connecting both to the same Wi-Fi network and keeping TV software current. Samsung Smart View guidance. |
| Cast from an app | Supported media plays on the TV; your phone can remain available for other tasks. | An app and TV or attached receiver that support the same casting method. Samsung identifies Chromecast and Amazon Fire Stick as third-party receiver options. Samsung guidance on streaming media. |
| USB-C-to-HDMI or DeX cable | External display output from the phone. | A Galaxy phone that supports video output, a suitable cable or adapter, and an available HDMI input. Samsung DeX connection guidance. |
Smart View and casting are not interchangeable: Smart View mirrors the display, while casting sends supported media from an app to a receiver. For iPhone, Samsung says its SmartThings screen-mirroring feature is not provided because iPhone uses AirPlay. If AirPlay is off the table, check whether your app can cast to a compatible receiver; verify any wired option for the exact iPhone and adapter. Samsung SmartThings mirroring instructions.

Mirror a Galaxy phone with Smart View
- Turn on the Samsung TV. If the phone cannot find it, check the TV’s screen-mirroring settings; menu names differ by model.
- Connect the phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network where possible. Samsung recommends this as a practical connection and stability check.
- On the Galaxy phone, open Quick Settings, tap Smart View, select the TV, then tap Start now or approve the prompt shown on the devices.
- If the TV does not appear, confirm that its model supports Miracast or Smart View and install any available TV software updates.
Smart View requires a compatible TV; a Samsung brand name alone does not establish support for every model. Samsung’s developer guidance also says Smart View discovery expects the phone and TV on the same network and a Smart View-capable TV. Samsung Smart View SDK.
Cast media from a supported app
- Check that the app supports casting to the TV or to a receiver connected to it. Samsung names Chromecast and Amazon Fire Stick as possible third-party streaming devices, but app and receiver compatibility still matters.
- Connect the phone and receiver as required by the app or device, then open the app’s cast control and choose the receiver.
- If the receiver is connected through HDMI, switch the TV to the input used by that device.
Do not expect Smart View itself to find every Chromecast. Samsung’s Korea support guide says direct Chromecast connection through Smart View stopped being supported from Android 11 / One UI 3.0 because of compatibility issues; it directs users to Chromecast-compatible external apps instead. That limitation concerns the Smart View route, not casting from every app. Samsung Korea Smart View and Chromecast guidance.

Connect a compatible Galaxy phone by cable
Samsung documents connecting supported Galaxy devices to a TV with a USB Type-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, or a DeX cable. Connect the phone to the TV’s HDMI input, then select that HDMI source on the TV. This is a device-dependent option: confirm that your exact phone supports external video output and that the cable or adapter is suitable. Samsung DeX connection guidance.

- The TV is missing from Smart View: Check the TV model for Miracast or Smart View support, put both devices on the same network, and check for TV software updates.
- The cast control does not show your TV: Confirm that the app and the TV or attached receiver support the same casting method. If using an HDMI receiver, select its input on the TV.
- Video plays on the phone instead of the TV: Use the app’s cast control when you want app media on the TV; Smart View mirrors the phone screen instead.
- A wired connection produces no picture: Verify phone video-output support, adapter compatibility, the HDMI connection, and the TV’s selected input.
Samsung’s Smart View discovery guidance specifies a Smart View-capable TV and devices on the same network. Samsung Smart View SDK.
