To stream to a custom RTMP destination, get the destination’s current ingest URL and stream key, enter them in your encoder’s custom-server settings, match its required protocol and output limits, then start the stream and check the destination’s preview or ingest status. In OBS, the usual path is Settings > Stream. Use the platform’s own instructions for the exact URL format: some require the key in a separate field, while others include it in the URL.
Before you connect: get the destination’s ingest details
Create or select a live stream in the destination’s current creator dashboard or live-control interface. Copy its ingest server URL and stream key, or the equivalent credentials it supplies. These values are specific to the destination and sometimes to an individual event; do not guess a server address or assume another event’s key will work. See OBS’s custom-server overview and the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Follow the destination’s exact field format. In some encoders the server address and key go into separate fields. YouTube’s API documentation notes that an ingestion address and stream name may need to be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not append a key unless the destination’s instructions call for that format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet up OBS for a custom RTMP destination
- Open the stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream.
- Choose a custom server. Select the custom streaming server option in the service selector.
- Enter the server URL. Paste the ingest URL supplied by the destination, including its required protocol, hostname, path, and port.
- Enter the stream key. Put the key in the key field if the destination provides it separately. If its instructions specify a combined URL, use that format instead.
- Set output to fit the destination and your connection. In OBS output settings, choose a video bitrate that is within the destination’s current limits and leaves enough upload capacity for a stable stream. OBS explains that suitable bitrate depends on upload speed and service restrictions. Its guide, published August 25, 2021, gives 6000 kbps as an example maximum for Twitch; that dated example is not a universal limit or a guarantee of Twitch’s current limit. Check your destination’s current specifications rather than applying it to every service.
- Start and verify. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Then check the destination’s preview, ingest health, or live-control page to confirm it is receiving the feed before relying on the stream being live to viewers.
Choose RTMP or RTMPS according to the destination
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS-encrypted connection. Use the secure endpoint when the destination offers or requires it; protocol, port, and field arrangement vary by service, so the platform’s current encoder instructions take precedence.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
YouTube RTMPS requirements
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application name, the rtmps protocol, TLS, and port 443. The URL’s components must be correct. If the encoder reports a certificate error, check that the address is an RTMPS endpoint rather than an RTMP one. If TLS fails despite an apparently correct URL, verify port 443; if those are right, inspect SSL diagnostics and confirm Server Name Indication (SNI) matches the connected hostname. A timeout can occur if the client sends cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS.
When HLS may be the better fit
For YouTube workflows involving HDR or codecs RTMP does not support, YouTube documents HLS as an alternate ingestion option when the encoder supports HLS. Its HLS help page says the stream URL begins with https and the key is already incorporated into that URL for this workflow. This is not a general URL pattern for other platforms; follow the chosen destination’s HLS instructions.

Protect the stream key
A stream key functions as a publishing credential. Keep it out of screenshots, public chat, and recordings of your settings. Twitch’s Stream Key FAQ warns, “Never share your stream key with anyone.” If a key is exposed, use the platform’s current refresh or reset process. Twitch also notes that refreshing a broadcaster’s own key does not refresh guest stream keys, so manage authorized guest access separately.
Troubleshoot a custom RTMP connection
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The destination does not receive the stream | Compare the URL’s protocol, host, path, port, and where the key belongs against the destination’s current instructions. | Correct the address or credential placement first; do not change unrelated encoder settings until the endpoint details match. |
| Authentication fails or the event stays offline | Check for a mistyped, expired, or event-mismatched key and confirm the correct live event is selected. | Copy the current key from the destination’s live-control interface. If it may have been exposed, refresh it using that platform’s process. |
| RTMPS reports a certificate or TLS error | Check that the URL uses the RTMPS endpoint and that the connection uses TLS; for YouTube RTMPS, check port 443. | Replace an RTMP address with the destination’s secure endpoint where required. If URL and port are right, inspect SSL diagnostics and SNI. |
| The connection times out | For YouTube RTMPS, confirm the client is not sending cleartext RTMP to the TLS endpoint. | Use an RTMPS-capable encoder configuration with the correct secure endpoint. |
| The stream connects but is unstable | Compare video bitrate with available upload capacity and the destination’s current limits. | Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, while remaining within the destination’s specifications. |
| The video format is unsupported | Check whether the destination and ingest protocol support the selected codec and format. | Choose a supported output format, or use another ingest protocol such as YouTube HLS when the workflow and encoder support it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
