How to Stream Steam Games from a Linux PC to Steam Frame

Steam Frame supports streaming Linux PC games in principle. Here’s how to get started, what its included wireless adapter does, and what Valve’s documentation leaves unspecified.

Yes. Valve says Steam Frame is designed primarily to stream a Steam library from a PC, and its supported execution models include Linux PC games. The game runs on your Linux computer; the headset receives the stream. Valve’s public documentation does not provide a complete consumer pairing walkthrough specifically for Linux, so the exact prompts and steps may depend on current Steam software.

What you need to know before connecting

Steam Frame is a standalone SteamOS headset, but streaming from a Linux PC means the PC runs the game and sends its output to the headset. Valve describes Frame as designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, and explicitly lists Windows and Linux PC titles among its supported execution models. Valve’s Steam Frame developer documentation establishes Linux-host support in principle, but does not specify a Linux distribution, Steam client build, SteamVR version, or GPU requirement for consumer streaming.

Valve’s Steam Frame product page says the headset includes a wireless adapter intended to link directly to a PC. It describes the headset’s dual radios and Multi-Link Streaming as providing adaptive redundancy. You do not need to buy a separate adapter for that intended connection.

How to start streaming from Linux

  1. Prepare the Linux PC. Start Steam on the computer and make sure the game you want to play is in its Steam library. Valve’s Remote Play overview describes streaming from the Steam library of a computer running Steam.
  2. Use the included wireless adapter for the direct PC link. Follow the current setup prompts shown by Steam Frame and the Steam client. Valve describes this adapter as part of the Frame’s direct PC connection, but its public pages do not give a numbered Linux-specific pairing sequence.
  3. Select the Linux PC and launch the game through Steam. If the host is not listed or the prompts differ, consult current Valve support rather than relying on steps written for another headset or an unverified Linux setup.

Choose the connection approach that fits your network

Valve describes both the included direct wireless adapter and Steam Link/Remote Play over a network. Its documentation does not quantify Linux-host latency or establish one approach as universally faster, so choose based on your setup rather than assuming a performance winner.

Approach When it may make sense What Valve’s documentation establishes
Included wireless adapter You want to use the direct PC connection intended for Steam Frame. The adapter is included and works with Frame’s dual radios for Multi-Link Streaming and adaptive redundancy. Valve product page
Ordinary network-based Steam Link/Remote Play You want to use your existing network and its available wired or wireless connections. Steam Link uses real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. The Remote Play page does not establish a Steam Frame-specific Linux performance result. Valve Remote Play

A Wi-Fi 6E router or Ethernet cable is not established as a Steam Frame requirement. Valve’s product page lists Wi-Fi 7 (2×2) for the headset and describes the included adapter as Wi-Fi 6E (6 GHz); it does not say that you must purchase a Wi-Fi 6E router to stream from Linux.

If streaming is unstable

First check for network congestion. Valve’s Steam Link network guidance warns that other applications using Wi-Fi can interfere with streaming and documents host-side options for prioritizing network traffic and adjusting bandwidth. These are general Steam Link recommendations, not guaranteed Steam Frame-specific fixes.

  • Reduce competing Wi-Fi activity and see whether the stream improves.
  • If you are using ordinary network-based streaming, consider wiring the Linux PC to the router if your setup allows it; this is a general network option, not a Frame requirement.
  • If the host still does not appear, check the current Steam Frame and Steam client prompts and consult Valve support. The public documentation does not establish a universal Linux host-discovery fix.

Do not apply Meta Quest requirements to Steam Frame

Valve’s Steam Link VR minimum requirements specify Windows 10 or newer, a GTX 970 or better, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5, and a wired PC-to-router connection for the named Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro setup. Those requirements are for those Quest devices, not Steam Frame, and should not be treated as Linux-to-Frame requirements. Valve Remote Play and Steam Link information
