You can use Liquidsoap to play an authorized playlist continuously and send its encoded output to YouTube Live. The playlist supplies the program; Liquidsoap handles source selection and output; a reliable host, network connection, compatible encoder, valid stream key, and rights to every recording are still your responsibility. The Liquidsoap documentation covers the pieces, but the exact encoder configuration depends on your installed version and should be tested before a public broadcast.
Before you start: confirm rights and prepare your audio
Make a playlist or directory of recordings you are entitled to broadcast. Sikh kirtan describes the music, not the licensing status of a particular recording. Check rights for the recording, performance, arrangement, and any third-party material included in it. - Keep audio files organized and make sure the playlist points to valid files accessible to the Liquidsoap process.
- Check that the files play correctly and that levels are usable before going live.
- Keep a copy of the authorized source files and the playlist configuration somewhere the host can access after a restart.
Choose how the playlist and live input should behave
Playlist-only programming
If the channel should play recordings continuously without a presenter, use the playlist as the program source. Liquidsoap models playlists as sources and supports source composition and handoffs. Allow a live source to take priority
If a presenter or live contribution sometimes needs to interrupt the recordings, Liquidsoap’s fallback composition can prioritize a live Harbor input and use the playlist when that input is unavailable. Decide how transitions should work and test them: a human source taking priority changes the program behavior, so do not assume it is equivalent to a playlist-only stream. Connect Liquidsoap to YouTube Live
- Create or open a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the encoder setup to obtain the current ingest URL and stream key. Use the URL and key displayed for your stream rather than relying on a remembered endpoint. YouTube encoder setup
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, or support post. Store it in a protected configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your host.
- Configure Liquidsoap’s YouTube output. Liquidsoap’s version 2.4.5 reference documents
output.youtube.live.rtmp, which takes an encoder, a source, a secret key, and an RTMP URL parameter. Its documented default URL isrtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2; use the current URL shown in Live Control Room for deployment. Confirm the function signature and encoder syntax against the Liquidsoap release actually installed. Liquidsoap 2.4.5 output reference - Select a compatible encoder and transport. YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. Check that the selected codec and the Liquidsoap build support one another. The YouTube RTMP output reference is versioned, so do not assume a code example for another release will work unchanged. - Resolve the video requirement. The documented Liquidsoap playlist workflow is audio-focused, while YouTube encoder guidance describes video ingest settings. These references do not establish a complete audio-only Liquidsoap-to-YouTube configuration or validate a particular static-image setup. If your chosen YouTube ingest expects video, configure a video-capable output compatible with your Liquidsoap version and test it before broadcasting.

Use YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are platform-published recommendations, not measured results or guarantees of a successful Liquidsoap configuration. Test the stream and monitor continuity
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream, following the visibility options available in YouTube Studio.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room and confirm that the expected video, if required, and audible stereo audio arrive.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator for ingest or encoding problems; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful connection from the sender alone. YouTube encoder settings
- Test playlist transitions, missing or unreadable files, and any live-input handoff before enabling unattended operation.
- After the test, confirm that the host and Liquidsoap process continue running, the source files remain accessible, and the network connection stays available.
Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous viewer-facing broadcast therefore does not guarantee a complete YouTube archive. A local archive can be stored on suitable local storage, such as an external SSD; no particular model is required. Choose capacity for the recording format and the retention period you need, and verify that the recording process itself is running.
