Yes—an old laptop can run a continuous devotional YouTube stream if it can sustain the encoder, power supply and internet upload at your chosen settings. It is not guaranteed 24/7 service: the laptop, electricity, network or YouTube connection can fail. Verify your channel’s live access, clear the rights to every recording, and rehearse the complete setup at the location where it will run before going public.
Check YouTube live access before setting up
In YouTube Studio, verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is enabled. YouTube’s current Help guidance says the operator must be at least 16, the channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Make sure the devotional material is cleared
Use only recordings, performances, images and video that you own or are authorized to broadcast. A devotional subject or traditional composition does not automatically make a modern recording or performance free to use. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and a stream may be interrupted or ended. Even if you have a licence, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be allowlisted in Content ID; otherwise a match may still interrupt the broadcast. Set up the old laptop as an encoder
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and follow the current encoder instructions and stream details shown there. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that prepares video for streaming. Do not copy a stream key into a public page or share it; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Install OBS Studio. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder option. OBS is open-source software available at no charge, including for commercial use. Download it from the OBS Project.
- Start with a lightweight scene. Use a still devotional image or low-motion loop, and add only necessary overlays. Avoid unnecessary animated effects and browser sources, which can add load to an older processor.
- Run OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard as a starting point, then set the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to broadcast. There is no single bitrate or resolution that is guaranteed to work on every old laptop or connection; the workable combination depends on the machine, scene, encoder and upload path.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter the current key and other stream details in OBS as directed by Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder steps are at YouTube Help.
Basic compatibility does not prove that a particular laptop can stream continuously. OBS says its requirements vary with settings and scene complexity, and a compatible system may still be unable to stream adequately. Its system guidance is dated 2021-08-25, so do not rely on it to establish current operating-system support; use current OBS documentation and test your installed version on the actual machine. Test upload stability at the broadcast location
A speed-test result is only a snapshot; national internet statistics cannot establish how stable the upload will be in your room, on your ISP plan, router or mobile signal. Use TRAI MySpeed as one check, then run a sustained rehearsal using the exact laptop, encoder settings and connection you will use live.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicators during the rehearsal. OBS notes that rising network-dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Where practical, test a wired connection as well as any Wi-Fi or mobile connection you might use. A wired connection is a sensible setup choice, not a guarantee of reliability.
- Do not infer a required upload speed from an India-wide average. The decisive check is whether your own connection sustains the chosen stream settings during an extended test.
TRAI reports offer sector context, but local performance depends on the last-mile connection, router, building and location. No single national figure establishes that a particular site is suitable.

Prepare power, cooling and recovery
- Run the laptop from its AC adapter and keep its vents clear so it can dissipate heat during a long session.
- Change the operating system’s power settings so it does not sleep or shut down automatically while plugged in. The exact menu labels vary by operating system and version.
- If brief local power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS sized for the laptop adapter and the router or modem. Check the actual connected load and expected runtime; a UPS cannot keep the stream online if the ISP or upstream network is down.
- Rehearse what the operator will do after a power loss, laptop restart, OBS crash or internet interruption. Keep access to YouTube Studio available so someone can confirm whether the stream has resumed.
A 24-hour broadcast is an operational commitment, not a promise of uninterrupted service. The laptop’s sustained performance, adapter and battery condition, electricity, network and recovery process all need to be checked for your particular setup.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, do not assume one continuous day-long broadcast will appear in your channel archive. Local recording uses storage and adds work for the laptop, so include it in the sustained rehearsal. Check that the destination drive has enough free space and that recording does not cause dropped frames or an unstable encoder.

Keep OBS status and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room available to the operator. Check that the audio is audible, the intended image is showing, the stream remains live, and there are no rights notices or sustained frame drops. Decide in advance who is responsible for restarting the encoder and verifying the stream after an interruption.
