You can run recorded indie game playthroughs as a continuous YouTube live stream by sending them through an encoder: enable live streaming on your channel, create a live event in YouTube Studio, and connect the encoder with the event’s stream URL and key. For a channel that must stay live around the clock, use a cloud service instead of leaving a home computer running. Plan around two important limits: YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours, and continuous or repetitive programming is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization.
Choose a playback method
There are two practical approaches. A local encoder gives you direct control over playback and recording, but the computer and internet connection sending the stream must remain available. A cloud service can keep uploaded videos streaming without your computer running. In either case, you are broadcasting prerecorded video through a live event—not going live from a camera.

| Method | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder on your computer | Sends the recorded video to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. | Your computer, encoder, and network need to keep working; plan playback and recovery for interruptions. |
| Cloud playback service | Plays uploaded videos from the cloud to your YouTube live stream. | Check the service’s current features, terms, pricing, and key-handling practices before relying on it. |
Prepare your channel and recordings
Enable live streaming in advance
Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.

Check rights before you build a loop
Confirm the game publisher’s streaming policy and secure rights for music and other third-party material in each recording. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if identified material remains. If separately licensed content is registered with Content ID, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its allowlist. A license by itself may not stop an interruption. YouTube places responsibility for necessary rights, including music rights, on the stream provider. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright guidance.

Organize and test the source videos
Make a playback list of recordings you have checked for rights, audio levels, and playback problems. Test the actual sequence before launch, including transitions and any point where one video hands off to the next. If you plan to keep YouTube’s replay, retain local recordings too: YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. An external drive is optional; YouTube does not require or endorse a particular storage device.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details, then note the watch-page URL if you want to share the event in advance.
- Copy the connection details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: keep it private, do not publish it with the watch-page link, and reset it if it is compromised. YouTube explains these controls in its live encoder settings.
- Configure the encoder. Choose encoder software or hardware that can play your recordings and send them to YouTube. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as useful for gameplay and overlays, but does not require a particular paid product. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings and select the intended playback sequence.
- Test before going live. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture, sound, playback order, and stream health. Verify that a local recording is being saved if you need a backup before launching the event.
- Start the event and monitor it. Start the stream from the encoder or Live Control Room as configured. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop settings; test them with your encoder before depending on them. Keep an eye on the event and have a way to restart the encoder if playback or the connection stops.
YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded YouTube streams. Its listing does not establish that it is necessary or suitable for your channel; verify current functionality, pricing, and terms directly with any service you consider.

Design the schedule around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on an uninterrupted day-long broadcast to produce a complete YouTube replay. If retaining a YouTube archive matters, split the programming into sessions shorter than 12 hours, then start a new event for the next session. This is a practical way to work within YouTube’s stated limit, not a guarantee that every replay will be saved. Keep a local recording as a separate backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake monetization a separate decision
A live stream is not automatically monetized. You must qualify for the YouTube Partner Program and comply with its policies; available features such as ads, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers have their own requirements. YouTube’s channel monetization rules call for original, authentic content and say mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content may not be monetizable. The policy update dated July 15, 2025 clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is covered by the “inauthentic content” policy; the reused-content policy was unchanged. Copyright clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions: satisfying one does not settle the other.

YouTube has not given a definitive ruling on whether a particular continuous channel of recorded playthroughs qualifies. A stronger editorial case is to make each session meaningfully distinct—for example, through different games, routes, challenges, commentary, or curation—and explain the value in the stream and channel information. These choices do not guarantee approval. YouTube reviews channel-level context, including its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time share, metadata, and About section. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and YPP eligibility information.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification, recent live-stream restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder connects but the event preview is blank or wrong: Recheck the event’s stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the correct event is selected, and verify that the source video is playing. Review the preview before going live.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Identify the flagged material, check the publisher’s policy and the rights for music or other assets, and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting when you have a separate license. Do not assume a license alone prevents interruption.
- A long broadcast has no complete replay: If it exceeded 12 hours, YouTube warns it may not be captured. Use shorter sessions for future archives and check your local recording for the missing material.
- The stream stops when the computer or network drops: A local encoder depends on the sending computer and connection. Restore playback and reconnect through the event controls; for a channel that needs to continue without a home computer, consider cloud playback.
- Monetization is rejected or uncertain: Review the channel as a whole against originality and inauthentic-content rules, not just the individual stream. Make the distinct contribution and purpose of each playthrough clear; no format guarantees acceptance.
