Set the streaming encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds in OBS. YouTube recommends that frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For a 24/7 cartoon loop, test the setting with representative animation, scene changes, and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health; the interval alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Set the keyframe interval in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open the Streaming tab, and find the keyframe interval control for the encoder actually used to stream.
- Enter 2 seconds and apply the change. OBS’s exact controls can vary by version and encoder, so confirm that you changed the streaming encoder setting—not a separate recording encoder setting.

If the encoder asks for frames instead of seconds
Convert the interval using the output frame rate: 2 seconds × frames per second. At 30 fps, use 60 frames; YouTube explicitly identifies 60 frames at 30 fps as equivalent to a 2-second interval. At 60 fps, use 120 frames. These are two ways of expressing the same duration, not different recommendations. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance explains the 30 fps conversion.

The keyframe interval is only one part of the encoder setup. YouTube’s current requirements describe RTMP/RTMPS ingest, supported video codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. The page recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check its current table for the bitrate recommendation matching your resolution, frame rate, and codec: there is no single bitrate that applies to every cartoon stream. Do not change bitrate or frame rate as a substitute for correcting the keyframe interval.

Latency is also a separate choice. YouTube describes it as the delay between capture and viewer playback; changing latency is not a fix for an incorrect keyframe interval. For stream-key entry and management, consult YouTube’s stream management instructions. Treat the key as a credential, and use YouTube’s reset process if it is compromised.
Test a cartoon loop before relying on it
- Start a test stream with audio and movement representative of the planned broadcast.
- Include animation changes, transitions between scenes, at least one loop restart, and any continuous audio. A static opening frame alone is not a useful test for this format.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the test is running. Confirm that ingest is healthy and that playback remains stable through a content transition.
- For a 24/7 broadcast, keep monitoring after launch and check reconnect behavior over time. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but a correct keyframe setting does not promise unattended uptime.
Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance alongside its encoder requirements. YouTube warns that incorrect keyframe frequency can produce stream-setting errors, while an interval that is too long can cause buffering; ingest errors can also result in an incorrect GOP size. If health warnings appear, verify the active streaming encoder, interval, output frame rate, and YouTube messages together.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream still reports a keyframe or GOP error: Check that the value is set on the streaming encoder, not the recording tab or a different encoder, and verify that a frame-count value matches the output frame rate.
- Viewers see buffering: Confirm that the interval does not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum and return it to the recommended 2 seconds. Also review YouTube’s stream-health warnings and the relevant bitrate row for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- The setting is missing or displayed differently: OBS controls are encoder- and version-dependent. Check the selected encoder’s advanced streaming settings and the relevant OBS hardware encoding guide; do not assume a recording control changes the live encoder.
- The stream drops during a long broadcast: A 2-second keyframe interval does not itself keep OBS, the computer, or the connection running. Check YouTube ingest and health messages, and test reconnect behavior rather than treating the keyframe value as an uptime setting.
