What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To stream racing game replays continuously on YouTube, play the replay on a PC or console, capture its video and audio in OBS, then send OBS’s live output to YouTube through RTMPS. Keep the replay source, encoder, computer and internet connection running, and monitor YouTube’s stream health; this setup is not a guarantee of unattended, indefinite uptime.
Choose how to play the replay
Start with a replay the game can play back without further gameplay input. Depending on the title, that may mean using its in-game replay feature or playing a previously saved video if the game supports exporting one. Game menus, controls, replay length and export options vary, so check the documentation for your specific game rather than relying on generic button instructions.

Before streaming, confirm that the game permits capturing and broadcasting the replay. Also check whether playback can repeat or otherwise stay active for the length of your broadcast. If the replay ends and the game does not restart it, OBS may continue sending a feed, but it will no longer show the replay you intended.
Choose the capture path
| Replay source | How OBS receives it | Is a capture card needed? |
|---|---|---|
| PC game on the streaming computer | Add a Game Capture source in OBS and select the game. | Usually not for this same-computer workflow. |
| Console or another external video source | Connect the source to a compatible capture device, then add a Video Capture Device source in OBS. | May be needed. Check the device’s compatibility with your console, computer, resolution and frame rate before buying. |
| Saved replay video on the streaming computer | Add an appropriate media or window capture source in OBS, depending on how you play the file. | Usually not if the video is already available on that computer. |
OBS documents Game Capture and Video Capture Device sources in its sources guide. Names and behavior can vary by operating system, game and capture hardware. For console capture, verify that OBS receives both picture and audio before configuring the live stream.

Set up YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Configure the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or configure the live stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Enter the YouTube connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and connect the account or enter the stream key according to the connection option shown. Do not share screenshots that reveal the key.
- Set the output and video settings. In OBS, check Settings > Output and Settings > Video. Configure the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval for the stream you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion and publishes current encoder settings and bitrate guidance in its live encoder settings.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the picture and sound appear in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or sharing it with viewers.
YouTube’s ingestion guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you choose; do not copy a number without checking whether your connection can sustain it. YouTube also transcodes live video into formats for viewers, but the feed you send still needs to match your encoder configuration.
Choose settings and test a representative replay
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose an output your computer, capture path and upload connection can sustain. Fast racing motion can make compression artifacts more noticeable, so test with the sort of movement the stream will actually contain.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate, then leave enough upload capacity for a stable feed. A connection that briefly reaches a target rate may still struggle to hold it continuously.
- Keyframes and rate control: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Check that game audio reaches OBS and that any microphone or other sound is intentional. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs.
- Test the whole chain: Run a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and address warnings before relying on the configuration for a longer broadcast.
HDR is optional. Use it only if the game or replay, capture path and encoder all support compatible HDR output. YouTube’s HDR live guidance documents HEVC/H.265 encoding for HDR; adding HDR to an ordinary SDR workflow is unnecessary. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Keep the replay and live feed going
A continuous broadcast depends on every part of the chain remaining active: replay playback must continue, OBS must keep encoding, the computer must remain powered and available, and the network must keep sending data. YouTube advises monitoring stream health, but its setup guidance and OBS’s source documentation do not guarantee that a particular stream will remain online indefinitely. For a long session, plan who will check the broadcast and what they will do if playback, OBS or the connection stops.
If you use YouTube’s HLS ingestion rather than the standard RTMPS route, follow its separate requirements for transport stream segments and playlist behavior. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Most straightforward replay broadcasts can begin with RTMPS; choose HLS only when the encoder or workflow needs it. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.

Record a local backup if you need one
OBS can record while streaming. In Settings > Output, configure the recording path and format, and check that the destination has enough free space for the session. OBS recommends MKV for recordings because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. A local recording can preserve a copy of the captured output, but it does not keep the YouTube broadcast live if the encoder or network stops. See the OBS recording formats guide.
Keep the replay within YouTube’s rules
Having permission to capture a replay does not automatically establish permission to broadcast every element in it. Check the game publisher’s streaming terms and consider the rights in the game’s soundtrack, licensed music, overlays and other included material. YouTube may restrict or remove a live stream that violates copyright rules. Replaying footage does not by itself make a stream eligible for monetization: YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are separate from copyright permission, and repetitive or minimally transformed programming may not meet monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No game picture in OBS | Capture source selection or game compatibility. | Confirm the game is running and the correct Game Capture source is selected. For an external device, check that it is connected, recognized by the computer and selected as the Video Capture Device source. |
| Console picture appears, but audio is missing | Audio routing through the console, capture device or OBS. | Check the capture device’s audio input and OBS source mixer. Confirm the source is not muted and that the intended audio device is selected. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream key, selected service or network connection. | Check the YouTube service and key in OBS, and confirm that the key has not been changed in Live Control Room. Treat the key as private; replace it if it may have been exposed. |
| YouTube reports stream-health warnings or viewers see buffering | Bitrate stability, upload capacity or encoder load. | Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the actual resolution and frame rate, then test again with enough upload headroom. If the computer is overloaded, reduce output demands and retest. |
| The stream remains live but the replay is no longer moving | Replay playback ended or paused. | Check the game or media player’s playback behavior. Use only a repeat or looping option the game or player actually supports. |
| A local recording is missing or damaged after a crash | Recording format or interrupted file write. | Use OBS’s recommended MKV recording format and verify the recording path and available storage before a long session. |
