To keep it running unattended, configure the Mac mini not to sleep, test the full setup before relying on it, and arrange a way to check or control the Mac remotely. This method still depends on the Mac, encoder, power and internet connection staying available.
What you need
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours; the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains the requirements.
- A Mac mini connected to a stable internet connection, with the prerecorded video available on the Mac or an attached drive.
- An encoder that can play the file as its output and send it to YouTube. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders; the available platform guidance does not identify one best Mac app or establish that every app supports unattended file playback.
- A remote administration method, such as macOS Screen Sharing or Remote Login, configured and tested before the Mac is left unattended.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room, then create a stream or use the Manage tab to schedule one. YouTube’s labels may vary slightly as Studio changes. Scheduling creates an event page viewers can visit and lets them opt into reminders. See YouTube’s live-stream setup steps.
- Set the event title, description, visibility and scheduled time. Check that the selected audience and any other event settings are correct for the video.
- In Live Control Room, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not include it in public instructions, shared screenshots or exposed logs. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance covers managing these details.
Configure the Mac mini encoder
- Choose an encoder compatible with your Mac and production needs. Confirm that it can play the prerecorded file continuously, output its audio and video, and keep running under the macOS account and configuration you will use remotely. Add graphics or other production elements in the file or encoder before the event.
- Enter the event’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination settings. YouTube documents RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP; use the RTMPS ingest URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube explains how to retrieve the RTMPS URL.
- Set the encoder’s video and audio output to values the source file, Mac, connection and YouTube ingest can sustain. YouTube publishes recommended protocol, codec, frame-rate, keyframe and bitrate settings by resolution; check its current table rather than assuming that a particular resolution will work. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Load the file and verify that playback, sound and any intended graphics appear correctly in the encoder output. Check how the encoder behaves at the end of the file: whether it stops, waits or repeats depends on the encoder and its configuration, not on YouTube’s scheduled-event workflow.
Prepare the Mac for remote operation
- On the Mac mini, open System Settings > Energy and enable the desktop Mac option to prevent automatic sleep when the display is off. The precise setting name and location can differ by macOS release. Apple warns that a sleeping Mac mini can interrupt running tasks and processes. Apple’s Mac mini energy settings guidance describes the relevant control.
- Configure a remote management path while you still have local access. Apple documents Screen Sharing for viewing and controlling the desktop, and Remote Login for remote access; restrict access to the users who need it. Apple’s Screen Sharing instructions and Remote Login guidance explain the setup.
- Test the complete remote path before the event: connect from the location or device you will use, confirm the encoder is visible and controllable, and verify you can recover access if the session disconnects.
Preventing sleep and enabling remote access are precautions, not a guarantee of continuous operation. A power or internet interruption, encoder crash, operating-system update, account challenge or failed remote-access session can still stop the stream. For an important event, plan how someone can intervene if remote recovery is not possible.
Test the stream, then start the event
- Run an upload-speed test from the Mac mini’s actual network. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. A test from a different connection does not establish the Mac mini’s available bandwidth. YouTube’s bitrate guidance gives its recommendations.
- Set up and test the encoder well before the scheduled start. YouTube recommends setting up two hours in advance and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event. These are YouTube’s planning recommendations, not a guarantee that the setup will work.
- Start the encoder and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview, confirm both audio and video, and look at stream health before starting the scheduled event. YouTube recommends monitoring quality and testing the event ahead of time. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- When the preview is healthy, start the event in Live Control Room. Keep the encoder running and monitor the event remotely where possible.
- When the broadcast is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder as directed by YouTube’s live-streaming guidance. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that longer streams will be archived automatically. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose between a Mac mini and a hardware encoder
If you already own a Mac mini, a software encoder is the natural starting point: it uses the Mac to play or assemble the program and send the feed to YouTube. YouTube also lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and describes its optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The official description establishes that basic use case, but not current availability, total cost or a buyer’s comparison.
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mac mini plus software encoder | Plays or assembles the program on the Mac and sends an encoder feed to YouTube. | Mac compatibility; file playback and scheduling; stream-key handling; resource use; remote control and recovery; RTMPS support; whether required features are included in the app. |
| AJA HELO Plus | A standalone H.264 encoder; YouTube describes optional PlayToStream scheduling of prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. | Total cost; supported media and storage; scheduling and monitoring controls; stream settings; and whether it removes a failure point that matters in your setup. Verify current availability and specifications with the seller. |
YouTube’s encoder guide describes the AJA HELO Plus and its encoder workflow. It is an optional hardware alternative, not a requirement for streaming from a Mac mini.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for every video, song, image and other element in the program. A prerecorded file being sent as a live event does not itself establish that you may use its content. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and any restrictions applicable to your channel and material. Avoid assuming that a live presentation changes the rights status of music or video included in the recording.

For a do-it-yourself setup, the Mac mini must stay awake, powered and online, and the encoder must keep playing and sending the file. If you want the channel to keep looping an uploaded video without leaving a computer at home running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a camera feed.
