How is the mission expected to reach the Moon?
The release listing says the hardware is expected to fly on a lander and rover provided through NASA’s CLPS initiative. It does not identify the particular CLPS contractor, lander, rover, or delivery date. That means the announcement establishes a planned delivery arrangement, not the final vehicle configuration or a launch schedule.
What might robotic lunar-cave exploration involve?
A separate NASA TechPort record describes a prototype concept called Spelunker, which offers one example of how a robotic cave mission could be organized. It is not identified as the design selected for the PSI-led PRISM effort.

- Lower a hub by tether into the cave to provide power and communications.
- Send autonomous hybrid driving-and-hopping robots to explore beyond the rim.
Those elements belong to the Spelunker concept, not confirmed specifications for the newly selected team. The announcement excerpt does not state its mobility system, power source, communications plan, or exploration sequence.
Why is exploring a lunar cave difficult?

- Communications: Radio links can become intermittent or unavailable inside a cave, so a robot may not be able to rely on a continuous connection to the surface.
- Power: Sunlight does not reach cave interiors. A robot must manage stored energy, and battery-powered missions can be short.
- Navigation and autonomy: Unknown, rough terrain requires robots to make more decisions without constant human direction.
- Returning science data: Data must find a route back through a changing communications network. JPL studies multi-rover coordination and energy-aware data routing as possible ways to return science products.
These are general engineering challenges documented by JPL, not a description of the PRISM team’s confirmed technical solution.

The available announcement excerpt does not name the cave or its location, identify the instruments, describe the team’s final mission concept, give an award value, or provide a launch or delivery date. It also does not specify the CLPS contractor or the lander and rover. Until those details are announced, the selected mission cannot be compared meaningfully with other cave-exploration concepts on schedule, payload, mobility, communications architecture, or science goals.
