How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube from a Chromebook Using Remote Desktop

A Chromebook can remotely control a separate computer that runs the encoder and streams a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Here’s how to set up the host, connect the stream, and test it.

You can use a Chromebook to control a separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that runs the encoder and sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The Chromebook is the remote-control screen—not the computer encoding the stream. The host computer must stay online and connected while it streams.

What you need

  • A Chromebook with internet access and Chrome Remote Desktop available.
  • A separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that can stay powered on, connected to the internet, and running during the broadcast.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, a YouTube-compatible encoder on the host, and a prerecorded video prepared for that encoder.
  • A reliable upload connection from the host computer. The Chromebook’s connection is used for remote control; the stream itself is sent from the host.

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before the day you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Set up remote access to the host computer

  1. On the host: open Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop instructions, choose remote access, and configure the computer as a host. Google documents host setup for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
  2. On the Chromebook: open Chrome Remote Desktop on the web, choose the host computer when it appears online, and enter its PIN to connect.
  3. Confirm you can control the host and open the encoder before relying on the setup for a broadcast. The host must remain reachable over the internet. A managed account or restrictive work or school network may block remote access.

Google says, “For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” Remote access lets you operate the host; it does not move the encoder or its video output onto ChromeOS.

Prepare and start the YouTube stream

  1. Prepare the prerecorded video on the host. Use a YouTube-compatible encoder and configure it to send the video as a live stream. YouTube describes encoder software on a computer as one option, but the appropriate way to feed a local video file into an encoder depends on the software you choose. Follow that encoder’s current documentation; a particular application or media-source configuration is not established here.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream: in YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains its stream setup.
  3. Connect the encoder: copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the host encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it.
  4. Choose connection and video settings: YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the video and the host’s upload capacity. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate in its encoder settings guidance. Other settings vary by resolution and frame rate; consult the full table rather than applying the 1080p30 figures to every stream.
  5. Test, then go live: start the encoder and, for a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live. Test with representative sound and motion, and monitor stream health while broadcasting. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
  6. End the broadcast: end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder guide.

Keep the video and channel eligible

Streaming a recording live does not remove the need to comply with YouTube’s rules. Use content you have the rights to stream, including its music, footage, and any other included material, and check YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A successful technical connection does not guarantee that a video will remain available or that a channel will avoid restrictions.

What to check if something goes wrong

  • The host is missing or offline in Chrome Remote Desktop: confirm it is powered on, connected to the internet, and configured for remote access. Check whether account management or a work or school network is restricting the service.
  • The encoder cannot connect to YouTube: check that the stream URL and key were copied correctly and that the key is current. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • No preview appears: verify that the host encoder is running and sending to the intended stream, then check the encoder’s connection status and Live Control Room. Avoid clicking Go live until the preview and representative audio and motion look right.
  • The stream is unstable or quality suffers: test the host’s upload capacity and lower the encoder quality if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and review stream health during the test.
  • You cannot enable live streaming in time: verify channel eligibility well before the event. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Alternative: dedicated encoder hardware

If you want scheduled prerecorded playout without keeping a computer as the encoder host, YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. It says optional AJA PlayToStream functionality lets prerecorded media be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a separate hardware route, not a required component of the Chromebook-and-remote-host method. YouTube’s documentation does not establish its current price or availability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube 24/7, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to leaving a remote-controlled host computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Nothing has to stay powered on at home, it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
