How to Stream Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube Live Using Restream Studio

Restream lets you play a video manually as a Studio scene or schedule an uploaded video to start automatically on YouTube Live. Here’s how to choose and set up each option.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restream offers two ways to put a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live: play it manually as a scene in Restream Studio, or schedule it as a prerecorded event that starts automatically. Choose Studio playback when you want to host the broadcast, control playback, or add live commentary. Choose a scheduled event when the uploaded video should start at a set time, even if you are offline.

Choose the right Restream workflow

Need Use How it works
Commentary, manual playback, or a video within a broader live show Studio video scene You add a local or stored video to a scene, then control playback during the Studio broadcast.
An automatic start at a chosen date and time Prerecorded livestream event You upload or select a video, set the event details and YouTube destination, and Restream starts the event at its scheduled time, including when you are offline.

These are distinct workflows: a Studio scene is one element of a host-controlled broadcast; a prerecorded event broadcasts the uploaded video as the event itself. Restream describes the event as prerecorded, so do not assume it behaves in every respect like a live camera or encoder feed. Restream’s prerecorded-video guide and its Upload & Stream instructions explain the scheduled option.

Prepare and check your video first

Check the file and encoding

Restream’s requirements page, published April 22, 2026, lists MP4, MOV, M4V, and MKV containers; H.264 video; AAC audio; and keyframe 2 as required. It recommends 1920×1080 Full HD at 30 or 60 FPS. 4K may work when the destination platform supports it. Verify the actual file properties before uploading rather than relying on the filename extension alone. See Restream’s video specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow for processing at the start and end

Restream recommends leaving 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end of the video. This gives destination platforms time to process the incoming stream and can help prevent important opening or closing content from being cut off.

Check plan limits and YouTube access

  • Restream’s stored-file count and file size or duration limits depend on the subscription. Check the limits shown for your account before uploading or scheduling; an older free-plan figure should not be treated as a universal current limit. Restream’s Upload & Stream help page describes the workflow, and its pricing page lists plan details.
  • When connecting YouTube, authorize the correct account and channel. Restream says you must own the channel you add. The channel must also have livestreaming enabled; Restream says first-time activation requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait. Check Restream’s YouTube connection instructions.

Option 1: Play a pre-recorded video as a Studio scene

This is the better fit for a host-led show: you can control the video during the broadcast and speak over it or move between it and other scenes. A local video plays from your device; a stored video plays from Restream storage.

  1. Open or create your Restream Studio stream and add a scene.
  2. Choose Media. For a file in Restream, choose Video, then select an existing upload or upload the file. For a file on your device, choose Local video and select it from local storage.
  3. Check that the video appears in the scene. Use the Studio playback controls to play, pause, seek, loop, hide, replace, or adjust the volume. Add live commentary if you want a host-led broadcast.
  4. Connect the intended YouTube channel, check the scene and audio, and start the Studio broadcast when ready.

Restream’s Studio guidance says one video from storage and one local video can be played at a time in their respective playback workflows. It recommends Chrome and a powerful computer for local playback. If local playback burdens your device, use a video stored in Restream instead. See the Studio playback instructions and how to add media to Studio.

Option 2: Schedule an automatic prerecorded event

Use this route when the video itself should be the broadcast and you want it to begin at a selected time without you being online. Restream says Upload & Stream supports a single video or playlist and can loop it up to 10 times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Restream, create a new stream and choose Pre-recorded livestream, then choose Video.
  2. Select a video from Uploads or Recordings, or upload a file.
  3. Enter the event title, description, date, and time. Add an event post or thumbnail if desired.
  4. Select YouTube as the destination and create the event. Check the scheduled details in Restream before the start time.

Restream says the event begins automatically at its scheduled time, even if you are offline. See the Upload & Stream instructions for the current workflow.

Event-day checks and common problems

Video playback is choppy or overloads the computer

This is most likely to affect a local video scene, because playback depends on the device running Studio. Try Chrome, close resource-heavy applications, and use a capable computer. If local playback still struggles, upload the video to Restream storage and use that video source instead. These local-device considerations do not apply in the same way to the scheduled uploaded-video event.

The video will not upload or is rejected

Check the container, video codec, audio codec, and keyframe against Restream’s requirements: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV; H.264; AAC; keyframe 2. Also check the account’s current file size, duration, and storage limits. A supported extension does not by itself confirm the file’s encoding is compatible.

The YouTube channel is missing or cannot go live

Confirm you authorized the Google account that owns the intended channel and that livestreaming is enabled for that channel. For a first-time activation, allow for the phone-verification process and Restream’s stated 24-hour wait before the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The opening or ending is cut short

Leave the recommended 15–20-second lead-in and tail around the important content. This buffer gives YouTube and other destination services time to process the incoming stream.

You want to verify quality before an event

For a live Studio or encoder broadcast, YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. Treat these as useful event-day checks, not as a guarantee of delivery. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions cover its Live Control Room stream URL and stream key for encoder-based workflows; entering a stream key is not a required step in Restream’s scheduled video-file workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Copyright and YouTube policy

Using a pre-recorded file does not remove your responsibility to have the rights needed to broadcast its video and audio. Check music, footage, images, and other material in the file before scheduling or going live, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. A technically valid upload is not proof that you have permission to use everything in it.

Restream’s process here is for broadcasting a recording, not making one. It does not require a camera, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder to send an already-recorded video through the described workflows.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a single scheduled event, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
