To stream a prerecorded podcast episode with moving visuals on YouTube, use FFmpeg to turn the audio into a waveform or spectrum video, encode the result for YouTube Live, and send it to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Review the preview before selecting Go live. The exact FFmpeg options depend on your installed build and input file, so check the local filter help rather than assuming a command will work unchanged.
Before you start
- An audio file you have permission to stream. Make sure you have rights to the episode and any music, clips, or other material in it.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer with enough upload bandwidth to send the encoded stream continuously.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires the channel to be verified and not to have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup requirements.
This workflow sends a live feed from your computer: the computer, FFmpeg process, and network connection need to keep running for the duration. Test the complete chain before using it for a scheduled event.

Waveform with showwaves
FFmpeg’s showwaves filter converts input audio into video output. Its documented options include canvas size, visualization mode (point, line, p2p, or centered line), frame rate, channel separation, and color. A waveform is a direct visual representation of changes in the audio signal.

Filter availability and syntax vary with FFmpeg version and build. Check the version and the help for the filter in your own installation, and consult documentation matching that version. For example, run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h filter=showwaves (or substitute showfreqs). If FFmpeg reports that a filter is unknown, use a build that includes it or choose an available filter; do not assume a command copied from another version will work.
Set YouTube-compatible output
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency; the interval must not exceed four seconds. It also lists AAC or MP3 audio. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and choose the bitrate row that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than selecting a target in isolation.

- The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
- All you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Audio: For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Stereo is a practical podcast choice, not a requirement for every stream. YouTube lists 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
- Video: Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation for the selected codec.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where possible, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: Use the RTMPS server URL provided for the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube also describes HLS as an option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP; that is a different setup from the standard RTMPS workflow below.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not guarantee a clean incoming feed. Your encoder settings and available upload capacity still matter.
Build the FFmpeg command for your setup
There is no single safe copy-and-paste command for every FFmpeg build, audio file, visualizer, and YouTube stream. Construct the command using options confirmed by your local filter help and encoder, then check each part before connecting it to YouTube:

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Input: Point FFmpeg at the episode file and confirm it can read the audio stream.
- Visualizer: Apply
showwavesorshowfreqsto the audio and set a canvas size, mode or spectrum style, frame rate, and color supported by your build. - Video encoding: Select a YouTube-supported codec and configure CBR, a keyframe interval of two seconds (never over four), and the bitrate matching your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current table.
- Audio encoding: Select AAC or MP3. For stereo, use YouTube’s recommended 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz as a practical target.
- Output: Send the encoded feed over RTMPS to the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
For a concrete command, translate those choices into the syntax supported by your FFmpeg build, including the correct input, filter graph, encoder options, and RTMPS destination. Inspect FFmpeg’s output for errors and verify that both audio and generated video are present before treating the stream as ready. Do not paste a stream key into a public script, screenshot, or shared log.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create an encoder stream or select the event you intend to use. Choose whether to schedule the event or start from an existing stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup, then configure FFmpeg to send to that destination over RTMPS. YouTube describes the key as password-like information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a secret.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that the visualizer moves and that the episode audio is audible.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it is not the same as confirming the event is live to viewers.
If you think the stream key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live settings before sending another stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.

Test and monitor the stream
Before the real event, test with audio and video representative of the episode and intended visualizer. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live, monitoring stream health and messages during the event, and having upload bandwidth that exceeds the combined stream demand by 20%. Other devices or people sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to FFmpeg. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and streaming tips.
During the stream, keep an eye on both the Live Control Room preview and FFmpeg’s output. As a practical check for a prerecorded episode, confirm that the process is still running and the feed continues to advance; an open terminal alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg says the filter is unavailable or rejects an option: Check
ffmpeg -versionand the local filter help. Use syntax supported by your installed build or a matching version of the documentation. - YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the current stream URL, that the key is copied correctly, and that the event is open in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
- The preview has audio but no moving visual, or the visual is blank: Check that the audio stream is being selected by the filter and that the filter output is mapped as video. Confirm the filter graph is producing frames in FFmpeg’s output.
- The feed is unstable or YouTube reports stream health issues: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate plus 20% headroom, and whether another device or user is consuming bandwidth. Retest at a lower resolution or bitrate using the matching YouTube table row.
- The preview is fine but the event is not live to viewers: In Live Control Room, confirm the preview and select Go live when ready.
Or let it run in the cloud
