How to Stream Podcast Episodes Continuously to YouTube Live with FFmpeg Concat

A practical guide to sequencing podcast episodes with FFmpeg concat and sending them to YouTube Live, with compatibility checks, ingest settings, testing, and archive caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can sequence podcast episode files with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and send the result to YouTube Live, provided the files have compatible streams and your computer and internet connection stay available. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding compatible files, but it does not guarantee gapless episode transitions or an indefinitely reliable broadcast. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours, so plan a separate recording for longer sessions.

What the FFmpeg concat demuxer does—and what it does not

The concat demuxer reads a plain-text list of files and presents their packets in sequence as though they had been muxed together. It can preserve the original encoded streams rather than re-encoding them. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases; matching file extensions or filenames is not enough. Incorrect duration metadata or streams of unequal length can lead to timestamp problems, artifacts, or gaps.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes concat demuxing useful when your episode files are already compatible. If they are not, normalize them first or use FFmpeg’s concat filter in a transcoding workflow; FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed. Neither approach by itself proves that episode boundaries will be silent or seamless. Inspect and test the actual files.

Prepare and check the episode files

Arrange the sequence

Put the episodes in the intended playback order and create a plain-text script with one file directive per episode. For example, save this as episodes.ffconcat:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'

The header is optional when you explicitly select the concat demuxer. If you rely on automatic recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. Use paths that resolve from the directory where FFmpeg will run, or specify full paths.

Verify compatibility before stream copy

Inspect each episode’s streams and compare their codecs, time bases, and stream layout before choosing a no-re-encode workflow. Confirm that audio and video tracks are present and consistent across the files. Check durations too: the demuxer uses duration information to adjust timestamps, so inaccurate metadata can shift later material. If the files differ, make them consistent before relying on stream copy.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before the planned broadcast.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.
  3. Configure your encoder. Enter the URL and key in the FFmpeg output configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections.
  4. Set output parameters for YouTube’s ingest requirements. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264 video, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings table and your available upload capacity rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
  5. Test and monitor. Send representative audio and video in a private or unlisted test stream, then check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate.

HLS is another ingest option, but it is not simply interchangeable with RTMPS. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency because it sends segments, and positions it for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Its HLS requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no encryption other than HTTPS. For a standard supported encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS.

Looping the playlist and checking episode transitions

The concat script defines the sequence; it does not, by itself, establish the exact command or option placement needed to loop that sequence indefinitely in every FFmpeg version. Confirm loop-option behavior against the FFmpeg version installed on your system before building an unattended broadcast. Test a complete pass through the list and its repeat in a private or unlisted stream, listening specifically for missing, repeated, clipped, or overlapping audio at episode boundaries.

  • Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
  • Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
  • Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
  • Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Even correctly configured looping is an intended sequence, not a promise of gapless playback or uninterrupted service. Differences in stream lengths and duration metadata can create gaps or artifacts. The local setup also depends on the FFmpeg process, host computer, and network remaining available.

Plan for archives and long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on an automatic archive for a continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer; the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a reliable archive at or beyond that boundary. If you need the program or individual episodes preserved, arrange a separate recording and verify that it is being saved before starting a long session.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: Check the working directory, exact path, capitalization where relevant, and quoting or escaping for spaces and special characters.
  • The concat input fails or later episodes behave incorrectly: Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases across every file. Normalize incompatible inputs or use a filter/transcoding workflow rather than assuming that a shared container makes them compatible.
  • Audio or video jumps at a boundary: Check duration metadata and whether streams in the episodes have unequal lengths. Test a full transition; correct or normalize the inputs as needed.
  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the stream URL and key are the ones for the selected Live Control Room stream, and the key has not been mistyped or replaced. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check upload capacity and use YouTube’s current settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate. For RTMP/RTMPS, verify H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s recommendation.
  • The stream stops when you leave: A local FFmpeg broadcast requires the host and network to remain available. Check that the process is still running and that the computer has not slept or lost connectivity.
  • A long stream is missing an archive: Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream at or beyond 12 hours. Use a separate recording plan.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection running the broadcast, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your prepared recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
