YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasts, including gaming, but its published guidance does not provide a dedicated tutorial or built-in setting for endlessly looping prerecorded files. You will need to arrange playback in your chosen encoder workflow and check that it works before going live.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours; its general live-stream guidance also requires users to be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming help and getting started with live streaming.
- Your original gameplay video files and any audio or graphics you plan to include.
- An encoder workflow that can send video and audio to YouTube Live. YouTube describes encoders as an option for gameplay and more advanced productions, and lists software and hardware encoder choices, including OBS. The exact menus and file-playback steps depend on the encoder you choose: YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Permission for the gameplay footage, game audio, music, overlays, and any third-party clips in the stream. A recording you previously uploaded is not by itself proof that every element can be rebroadcast.
Set up the prerecorded-video stream
- Confirm live access. Check that your channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements. If live streaming is newly enabled, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create the stream or event. Use the event’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube treats the key like a password, so do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Feed your old footage into the encoder. Configure the encoder to use your local gameplay file as its video and audio source. For a longer channel, set up file playback or a playlist using the playback features of your chosen encoder. YouTube’s general encoder workflow establishes how to connect an encoder; it does not specify a particular method for looping a local playlist continuously. Verify the playback behavior in the encoder’s own documentation and test it rather than assuming it will restart or advance correctly.
- Preview and test before the public start. Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled event, check the Live Control Room preview, and confirm both picture and sound. Monitor the stream while it runs; YouTube recommends testing the setup and keeping an eye on audio and video quality. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Keep your own archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local copy if you need an archive; do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy for a continuous channel. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Check rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Review each part of the recording, not just the gameplay image. Game footage, in-game music, separately added soundtracks, overlays, and third-party clips may have different rights considerations. YouTube identifies copyright restrictions as a reason an active stream can be stopped or restricted; see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance. If you are unsure whether a specific game or track can be rebroadcast, check the relevant rights holder’s terms before streaming.
Do not confuse prerecorded files with console gameplay
YouTube also supports direct console streaming, but that is a way to broadcast gameplay from a console, not an established method for feeding a library of prerecorded files. If your source is old recordings, use an encoder workflow that can play those files; choose a console’s direct broadcast option when you are streaming live gameplay from the console itself. YouTube outlines its available live-streaming methods in its getting-started guide and encoder guidance.
