OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 Indian Music YouTube Channel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fixed, prerecorded music loop, FFmpeg is usually the better fit if you can manage a command-line process and its recovery; choose OBS if you need a visual interface for scenes and manual production changes. Neither program guarantees a 24/7 broadcast. You still need to monitor the encoder, internet connection and power—and, for music, confirm that you have the rights to stream every recording and composition.

If you want to avoid keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud alternative: upload videos, add your stream key and go live. It loops your uploads from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

What matters OBS Studio FFmpeg
Working style Visual software workflow. Better suited, by workflow inference, to operators who want to manage a visible production and make manual scene or overlay changes. Command-line workflow. Inputs, outputs and playback behavior are set with options and scripts.
Repeating prerecorded files The OBS documentation reviewed covers media formats and recording/container behavior, but does not establish a particular playlist or unattended-recovery design. The official manual documents infinite input looping with -stream_loop -1 and real-time pacing of file input with -re.
Changing the production Choose it if you want to work through a visual interface and adjust scenes or overlays manually. Choose it if the output is mostly fixed and you are comfortable changing command-line arguments or scripts.
YouTube ingest requirements The same YouTube ingest settings apply whichever encoder you use; neither has a special YouTube compatibility advantage established here.
Reliability and recovery No controlled comparison establishes an uptime winner. Neither encoder alone provides a complete plan for process supervision, internet or power failures, or recovery after a disconnection.

For a simple unattended playlist, FFmpeg’s documented looping and pacing controls make it the clearer fit—provided you can supervise the process and recover it when something fails. Prefer OBS when hands-on visual production matters more than a script-managed loop. This is a workflow recommendation, not a measured reliability comparison.

What you need before going live

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours to become available.
  • No live-streaming restriction on the channel in the previous 90 days, as required by YouTube.
  • A prerecorded playlist or media source you are entitled to stream, plus a stable computer, power supply and internet connection for a local setup.
  • A YouTube stream key. Treat it as a password: do not share it or include it in publicly visible scripts, screenshots or logs.
  • A plan for monitoring and recovery. A loop option repeats media; it does not restart a crashed encoder or restore a lost connection by itself.

Configure a YouTube-compatible music stream

YouTube’s encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026, recommend RTMPS for ingest. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. For a stereo music stream, its page lists AAC or MP3 audio, recommends 128 Kbps, and specifies 44.1 KHz stereo. Check YouTube’s current guidance before configuring, since platform requirements can change.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output target YouTube-listed H.264 video bitrate Keyframe interval
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds

These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest recommendations, not measurements of Indian viewers’ connection speeds. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, then test with representative audio and motion. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and broadcast.

Run a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s official manual documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping of an input and -re for reading file input at its native frame rate—equivalent to -readrate 1. Real-time pacing is useful when sending a file as a live stream. These options control media playback; they are not a process supervisor, network monitor, failover system or uptime guarantee.

  1. Prepare the source. Confirm the file plays correctly and has the intended audio and video. Use a loop point that will not produce an abrupt or unwanted transition.
  2. Choose the output. Select an output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrates, CBR mode and keyframe interval compatible with YouTube’s current encoder settings. The values above are YouTube’s listed guidance for the two H.264 targets shown.
  3. Get the YouTube ingest address and stream key. Copy them from YouTube’s live control room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  4. Build and test the FFmpeg command. Use -stream_loop -1 on the input to repeat it indefinitely and -re to pace file reading in real time. Configure the output for YouTube’s ingest protocol and your selected encoder settings, then test before relying on it for a long broadcast. Exact command arguments depend on the file, FFmpeg build and chosen output settings.
  5. Plan for process and connection failures. Arrange an external way to notice a stopped process or failed upload and restart or reconnect it. Test that recovery plan; looping does not handle these failures.

Run a prerecorded stream with OBS

OBS is the more visual option when you want to compose a scene and make production changes manually. The comparison evidence establishes no particular OBS playlist automation or unattended recovery method, so confirm that your chosen OBS setup behaves as needed rather than assuming it will recover unattended.

  1. Prepare a scene and media source. Add the prerecorded visual and audio sources you intend to broadcast, and check that they play as expected in the OBS preview.
  2. Configure streaming output. Select YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where available, enter the stream key privately, and set a YouTube-compatible video codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval. Configure stereo audio to an accepted codec and the recommended bitrate and sample rate.
  3. Test the full path. Start a test broadcast, check picture, audio and YouTube stream health, and verify the behavior of your scene and media when the source reaches its end.
  4. Provide supervision and recovery. Keep the computer, power and network available, and plan how you will detect and respond to a stopped OBS process or lost connection. A visual interface does not itself guarantee continuous operation.

Plan archives and stream transitions

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete recording on that basis. For a 24/7 channel, decide how you will handle stream transitions, watch pages and the recordings you expect to retain; check YouTube’s current archive behavior for your workflow.

Copyright and music rights come before encoder choice

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, YouTube may show a placeholder, warn you and temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate it.

A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights-holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, even when the stream is restricted to territories where you have rights. Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends, if it is archived. An allowlist is not a substitute for obtaining the necessary rights. For an Indian music channel, confirm permissions for each recording and composition, including relevant territories, directly with the rights-holders; seek professional advice for jurisdiction-specific questions.

Common problems and what to check

  • Live streaming is not available yet: Confirm channel verification and eligibility. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours; check for any live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check that the connection can sustain your configured upload bitrate, verify the output settings and test again. Reduce the target quality if the connection cannot reliably carry it.
  • The broadcast stops when a file ends: For FFmpeg, confirm that infinite input looping is configured with -stream_loop -1. For OBS, verify the selected media-source behavior; the reviewed material does not establish a universal OBS playlist or recovery setup.
  • The encoder does not recover after a disconnect: Looping is not reconnection or process supervision. Check the encoder process, network and power, and use a separately tested monitoring and restart plan.
  • The stream is interrupted despite having a music license: Ask the rights-holder whether your channel has been added to the Content ID allowlist, and verify that your license covers the relevant recordings, compositions and territories.
  • You cannot find one complete archive of a long broadcast: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams shorter than 12 hours. Check the platform’s current guidance and plan shorter stream transitions if archive continuity matters.
