You can run a 24/7 YouTube gaming stream by sending prerecorded gameplay videos from a playlist through an encoder—either software running on a computer you keep on, or a cloud service that handles playback and streaming. Before choosing, confirm your channel can livestream, protect your stream key, test the preview, and plan for continuous monitoring and recovery.
How playlist streaming works
YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to broadcast gameplay and manage a more advanced production. An encoder may be software on a computer or standalone hardware. For a playlist of existing gaming videos, the practical choice is where playback and encoding will run: locally on your equipment or in the cloud. YouTube explains, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)
A local computer is optional for prerecorded files; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a required PC, graphics card, capture card, or playlist application. Capturing live console gameplay is a different setup because it requires a live gameplay signal rather than existing video files.
Choose where the stream will run
Run an encoder locally
A local setup uses encoder software on a computer to play and send the playlist. The computer and its internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. This gives you direct control over the running setup, but you are responsible for keeping it operating and checking the broadcast.

Use a cloud service
A cloud service can keep prerecorded video streaming without relying on a home computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder information lists Gyre for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. That listing establishes that these services are named in YouTube’s documentation; it is not an endorsement or a comparison of their current prices, terms, uptime, or recovery features. Verify those details with each provider.

Prepare the channel and stream
- Check livestream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Review the YouTube live streaming tips before scheduling an unattended stream.
- Choose an encoder route. Decide whether playlist playback and encoding will run on a local computer or through a cloud service. YouTube documents both software and standalone hardware encoder options, as well as cloud services in its encoder guidance.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the encoder’s setup flow and provide the stream URL and stream key where requested. In YouTube’s live stream settings, the key is treated like a password and address: keep it private and do not share it publicly.
- Test the playlist and preview. Prepare the encoder in advance, check the Live Control Room preview before going live, and verify both picture and sound. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality throughout the stream (YouTube live streaming tips).
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. The bitrate you need depends on the actual encoder output, so measure or inspect that output rather than assuming a fixed requirement. Unstable connectivity can interrupt a stream (YouTube streaming tips).
- Set start and stop behavior deliberately. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop options in stream settings. Choose them to match your operating plan; those settings do not guarantee recovery from every encoder, network, or platform failure (Manage live stream settings).
Keep the playlist suitable for a public livestream
Use only gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material you have the right to broadcast. A playlist being prerecorded does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current rules and any applicable game publisher terms before leaving a stream running. Also consider whether the channel’s presentation and programming meet YouTube’s current monetization requirements; a continuous loop alone is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
The stream will not start
- Recheck that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the prior 90 days.
- Confirm the correct stream URL and key were entered in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube settings and update the encoder.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and resolve any encoder or input issues before starting the broadcast.
The stream drops or becomes unstable
- Check that upload bandwidth remains above the actual total stream bitrate, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Investigate network interruptions; YouTube notes that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- For a local setup, check that the computer and encoder are still running. Auto-start and auto-stop settings are not universal failure-recovery mechanisms.
Video or audio is missing or poor
- Use the preview to verify the playlist source and encoder output before going live.
- Monitor audio and video during operation, as YouTube recommends, and correct the issue in the playlist or encoder rather than assuming the stream is healthy because it remains connected.
Costs and practical trade-offs
A local encoder avoids paying a cloud-streaming provider, but requires a computer and internet connection to remain available, along with your time to operate and monitor the setup. YouTube’s cited documentation does not specify a minimum PC or compare the total cost of local and cloud approaches. For cloud services, compare current provider terms, included storage, playlist controls, recovery behavior, and billing before committing; YouTube’s listing does not establish those details.
