For a Flutter app using LiveKit Agents, receive live voice-agent transcripts from the lk.transcription text stream. The current Flutter Session API uses a TranscriptionStreamReceiver for that topic by default. Render transcript messages by stable segment ID so interim updates change an existing row instead of creating duplicates.
Choose the Flutter integration path
LiveKit’s Flutter SDK adds real-time video, audio, and data features to Flutter apps and can connect to LiveKit Cloud or a self-hosted server. The SDK overview currently gives livekit_client: ^2.13.0 as an installation example; check your app’s resolved dependency version before adopting API examples. See the LiveKit Flutter SDK overview.

For a voice-agent app, use LiveKit’s Flutter voice AI quickstart as the session-setup foundation. It uses livekit_client and links to a cross-platform voice-agent starter.
Use Session for a managed lifecycle
The current Flutter Session API encapsulates room connection and agent dispatch. Its default transcript receiver listens on lk.transcription, and Session extends ChangeNotifier, allowing Flutter widgets to observe session changes. This path suits an app that can adopt Session’s lifecycle and message model. Read the Session API reference.

Use a custom stream handler for an existing room lifecycle
If your app already owns room connection state or needs a different message lifecycle, register a handler for the lk.transcription text-stream topic and process messages yourself. Read each stream defensively: LiveKit notes that reading can fail partway through and recommends catching failures. The available documentation describes the components and lifecycle, but does not supply one drop-in widget snippet that fits every Flutter architecture.
Render partial and final transcripts without duplicate rows
Observe the Session message history and updates, then render its ReceivedMessage values. The receiver uses lk.segment_id as the message ID when present, falling back to the text stream ID. Use that ID as the list-row key and update the matching row as new transcript data arrives. See the TranscriptionStreamReceiver reference.

- Agent speech: the agent emits a new text stream for each message, with chunks to append until the transcript is finalized.
- User speech: interim updates may resend the full text for the segment. Replace the displayed value for that segment; blindly appending each update repeats earlier words.
- Stable identity: keep using the segment ID across updates. If it is absent, the receiver falls back to the stream ID.
- Partial-state cleanup: when a new segment arrives for the same participant, the receiver removes older partial segments, bounding its partial transcript state.
Finality is represented by the lk_transcription_final stream attribute. It may be encoded as a boolean or one of several string forms, which the Flutter model accepts. The TranscriptionAttributes reference identifies itself as livekit_client 2.12.0; verify the exact types against your installed package.

LiveKit Agents publishes speech-to-text results to the frontend in real time. With AgentSession, text for agent speech is published alongside playback by default. The stream topic is lk.transcription; streams include lk.transcribed_track_id, and the sender identity is the participant whose speech was transcribed. Choose whether text follows audio
By default, agent transcript text is synchronized with speech, so it appears word by word as audio plays. If the agent is interrupted, the transcript stops and is truncated to match the spoken output. To forward text as soon as it is available instead, set sync_transcription=False in Python text output options or syncTranscription: false in Node.js output options.

The documentation describes these behaviors but does not quantify the latency difference. To disable transcript output, use text_output=False in Python RoomOptions or transcriptionEnabled: false in Node.js outputOptions. If the Flutter client receives no text streams, check that agent output is enabled and published on lk.transcription.

Add timing-aware captions only when the output supports them
For timing-aware display, LiveKit documents use_tts_aligned_transcript=True in Python or useTtsAlignedTranscript: true in Node.js. Timing is relative to the start of the agent’s current turn. LiveKit labels the transcription_node and TimedString implementation experimental, and formatting may be lost depending on the TTS provider.

Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Rime, and Speechify plugins are listed as supporting word-level transcription timing. LiveKit Inference and other providers may instead apply sentence-level alignment; providers that do not emit timed chunks may still send text without timing fields. In the documented JSON format, every chunk has text; start_time and end_time are present when the chunk is a TimedString. Confirm the chosen provider’s actual output before promising word highlighting.

Handle interim input and missing final transcripts
The Agents user_input_transcribed event carries transcript text and an is_final boolean. It may also include a language; speaker_id is available only when the STT plugin supports diarization. This event is useful for logic inside the agent, while the Flutter client receives transcript text through the text-stream path.
LiveKit’s Agents events reference also describes an optional transcription timeout for cases where voice activity detection detects speech but STT does not return a final transcript in time. The timeout is off by default and requires VAD and STT. In the client UI, present interim text as provisional; silence or a delayed final update does not establish that the user said nothing.
