How to Stream in Portrait Mode with the Streamlabs Mobile App

Configure a portrait camera or screen-share stream in Streamlabs Mobile, lay out scenes for vertical viewing, and check how YouTube handles the result.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream vertically with Streamlabs Mobile, set up a camera or screen-capture stream, prepare your scene in the app’s landscape editor, and put your phone in portrait orientation before you start—especially for screen sharing. Then check the destination’s live preview: portrait video does not by itself guarantee placement in YouTube’s Shorts feed.

Set up a portrait stream in Streamlabs Mobile

Streamlabs Mobile supports phone-based camera and screen-capture streams, with scenes you can customize and destinations you can select. App screens and available controls can vary between Android and iOS, and may change with app updates.

  1. Install Streamlabs Mobile from your device’s app store and sign in. Allow camera and microphone access if prompted.
  2. Open the main menu and choose Scenes. Select a scene or create one, then add the widgets, overlays, text, or images you need.
  3. Open Streaming Settings. Review the available video, audio, camera, and screen-capture options. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio input, and camera selection as appropriate for your device, connection, and destination. The available controls differ between iOS and Android; the official setup guidance does not establish one bitrate or frame-rate setting that suits every phone and network.
  4. Choose your destination and select camera or screen capture. For screen capture, turn the phone to the orientation you intend to use before going live, and keep it in that orientation throughout the stream.
  5. Preview and arrange the scene, start the stream, and check the platform’s live preview to confirm the framing and output look right.
  • Charge the phone before streaming, close background apps, and suppress notifications you do not want viewers to see.
  • For hands-free camera framing, a smartphone tripod with an adjustable holder is optional; it is not required to use the app.

Arrange the scene for portrait viewing

Streamlabs’ scene-editor guidance describes editing widgets in landscape mode, even when preparing portrait content. It also notes that portrait camera video may have black areas beside the camera image in the editor behavior it describes, where widgets placed far to the left or right can appear. Treat this as a layout consideration, not a guarantee that every platform will receive a 16:9 stream or render the scene identically.

Keep important elements inside the visible composition

  • Place essential text, alerts, and other key elements where they remain legible around the camera image in the portrait preview.
  • Check the result on the destination’s live preview rather than assuming that the landscape editing view matches the viewer’s screen.
  • If you need both vertical and horizontal compositions, plan and verify each output separately; a portrait phone setup is not the same workflow as YouTube’s dual-output Live Control Room workflow.

Prevent a small screen-share image after rotating

Streamlabs has documented a case where a screen-share stream starts in landscape and the phone is then rotated to portrait. The stream output can remain locked to landscape while the phone display rotates, making the shared image appear smaller. The safest practical approach is to set the phone to the intended orientation before starting the screen-share stream and leave it there.

Streamlabs’ article described disabling orientation lock as a workaround for Twitch or Trovo, but said it had no workaround for YouTube and other platforms at the time of that article. Because issue status and app behavior can change, check the current app behavior rather than relying on that workaround for a present-day stream.

Understand what portrait mode means for YouTube

A vertically oriented broadcast from third-party streaming software may display vertically without being detected or surfaced in YouTube’s Shorts feed. Streamlabs cautions that portrait orientation alone does not ensure Shorts-feed placement. Confirm how the stream appears in YouTube’s live preview and do not promise viewers a particular discovery-feed placement.

YouTube also documents a separate Live Control Room workflow for horizontal and vertical output. YouTube Help says: “By default, your live streams will go live in both horizontal (16:9 aspect ratio) and vertical (9:16 aspect ratio) formats at the same time when you stream from the Live Control Room.” That statement applies to streaming from the Live Control Room; it should not be read as a guarantee that rotating a phone in Streamlabs Mobile activates dual output or every YouTube vertical-live feature. YouTube’s third-party encoder path uses matching stream keys and RTMP(S), which is a distinct setup from simply choosing portrait orientation in the mobile app.

Streamlabs’ multistream guidance identifies simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms from the app as a Streamlabs Ultra feature. That is a separate decision from portrait orientation: Ultra is not stated as a requirement just to choose portrait mode. Consider a single destination when you only need one platform; multistream only if you need the same broadcast on multiple destinations and have confirmed the current app requirements.

Troubleshoot common portrait-stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Screen-share content looks unusually small after rotating the phone The stream began in landscape, then the phone was rotated while the output remained landscape-locked. End the stream, set the phone to the intended orientation, then start screen capture again and keep that orientation.
A portrait YouTube stream does not appear in the Shorts feed Vertical orientation from third-party streaming software does not guarantee Shorts-feed detection or placement. Check YouTube’s live preview and verify that you are using the intended YouTube workflow. Do not assume that rotating the phone enables Live Control Room’s dual-output path.
Widgets or text look misplaced or obscured The scene is being edited in landscape while the intended viewer composition is portrait, or elements are positioned in side areas around the camera image. Reposition key elements using the portrait preview and confirm their appearance in the destination preview.
A destination or setting is missing Available destinations and controls vary by mobile operating system and app version. Check the installed app’s current destination list and settings; do not rely on a feature listed for another platform or version.
The stream stutters or the phone struggles Device load or network conditions may not suit the selected settings; there is no universal bitrate or frame-rate recommendation for every phone and connection. Close background apps, use a reliable connection, and review the settings available for your device and destination before going live.
