The right choice depends on where you’re going live and whether a center crop is good enough or you need separately composed layouts.
Choose a method that fits your platforms and layouts
First decide which destinations need each format. Then choose a workflow that supports those destinations and gives you the framing control you need. Some tools adapt one layout to the other; others let you arrange separate portrait and landscape canvases.

Set up YouTube dual streaming
YouTube describes simultaneous horizontal and vertical live output as 16:9 and 9:16 formats. The built-in Auto option derives portrait by center-cropping the horizontal feed, so check whether the crop keeps your subject, text, and important overlays in frame. If you need to compose the portrait version independently, use the encoder route if it is available to your account.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room > Stream settings.
- Enable Dual stream. Auto is selected by default and creates the vertical version from a center crop.
- For separate encoder outputs, select Encoder and add the second stream key for the vertical format. Send each corresponding format to its matching key.
- Preview both outputs before the event. Confirm that framing, text, overlays, and audio work in each format.
YouTube’s current guidance is at Get started with live streaming — Computer. Availability of the third-party encoder route is subject to a staged rollout. Decide before going live: YouTube says the vertical format cannot be removed once the stream has started.

Set up TikTok LIVE Studio Dual layout
TikTok’s Dual layout starts with the portrait composition, then syncs its sources into landscape. The landscape version is adjustable, but it is not a wholly independent scene.
- In LIVE Studio, right-click a scene and choose Switch layout > Dual layout.
- Edit the portrait layout first. TikTok’s help page states, “In a dual layout scene, you start by editing the portrait layout.”
- Inspect the landscape layout and reposition or resize synced sources to suit its wider frame.
- Check widgets: chatbox and ranking widgets are removed because they are unsupported in portrait.
- Preview both layouts and verify that the subject and any text remain readable.

Use Restream Studio for both orientations
Restream Studio can send portrait and landscape outputs from one Studio session. Assign orientation to each channel before the broadcast; the setting cannot be changed while live. Elements appear in both formats, but their appearance can differ because each frame has different proportions and available space.

- Add your destinations in Restream Studio, placing channels under Portrait or Landscape as appropriate.
- Arrange and inspect the shared elements in both frames. Do not assume an overlay sized for one orientation will fit the other.
- Confirm each channel’s orientation before going live, then preview both outputs.

Create a separate vertical scene in OBS with Restream’s plugin
If a shared crop or adapted scene does not give you enough framing control, Restream’s Vertical plugin supports a vertical scene alongside the main OBS stream. The vertical output uses OBS’s primary audio mixer and inherits the main encoding settings; a separate bitrate is available.
- Install the Restream Vertical plugin for macOS or Windows, following Restream’s current compatibility instructions.
- In OBS, add and compose a vertical scene. Check source placement at portrait dimensions rather than relying on the landscape scene’s crop.
- In Restream, assign channel orientation before going live.
- Review audio through the primary OBS mixer and check the inherited encoding settings. Set a separate vertical bitrate if needed.
- Preview both orientations, then start OBS and confirm that each destination receives the intended format.
For this Restream route, YouTube receives separate live events for the two orientations. Consult Restream’s OBS plugin guide (April 22, 2026) for current installation and compatibility details.

Configure Streamlabs Desktop Dual Output
Streamlabs Desktop offers separate horizontal and vertical settings, so you can control source visibility and arrangement for each canvas. Its guide recommends 1080×1920 at 30 FPS for TikTok; that is Streamlabs’ configuration recommendation, not an independent performance guarantee.

- Connect your destinations in Streamlabs Desktop and enable Dual Output.
- Configure the horizontal and vertical tabs separately. Arrange sources and use per-source visibility controls to keep each composition clear.
- Preview both outputs, checking framing and legibility before going live.
- At Go Live, assign destinations to the appropriate vertical or landscape output.
Streamlabs states that multiple destinations within each orientation require Ultra. Its setup instructions are in How to Set up Dual Output in Streamlabs for TikTok Streams (April 25, 2025).
Check both compositions before you go live
A successful dual stream is not just two encodes: the content must make sense in both frames. Use this checklist during setup and preview.

- Framing: Keep the main subject inside the portrait frame. A centered landscape shot can still cut off a face, gameplay action, or demonstration when cropped.
- Text and overlays: Check titles, captions, lower thirds, and alerts at both aspect ratios. Text legible in a wide frame may be too small or clipped in portrait.
- Layout behavior: Determine whether your chosen route crops, syncs sources, or gives you separate canvases. Adjust the portrait and landscape versions accordingly.
- Audio: Listen to both outputs. For the Restream OBS plugin, vertical audio uses the primary OBS mixer.
- Routing: Confirm destinations and orientations before starting, especially in Restream, where orientation cannot be changed midstream.
- Eligibility and compatibility: Verify that your account can use the required feature and that your software and plugin versions remain compatible. Feature availability and rollout can change.
Troubleshoot common dual-stream problems
The portrait stream cuts off the subject or text
Likely cause: The portrait output is a center crop of the landscape feed, or the adapted layout has not been adjusted. Fix: Inspect the portrait preview and reframe the content. If the workflow permits, build a distinct vertical scene or canvas instead of relying on a crop.
A TikTok widget disappears in Dual layout
Likely cause: Chatbox and ranking widgets are unsupported in portrait. Fix: Plan the scene without those widgets, then check the landscape layout after switching to Dual.

Likely cause: Orientation was assigned incorrectly or not checked before the broadcast. Fix: Set channel orientation before going live and preview it. Restream Studio does not let you change orientation midstream.

You cannot select YouTube’s encoder-based dual stream
Likely cause: The third-party encoder option is not yet available to your account under YouTube’s staged rollout. Fix: Check current Live Control Room availability. If Auto is available, remember it creates portrait from a center crop; otherwise use a supported workflow for your destinations.
The vertical OBS output has unexpected audio or encoding behavior
Likely cause: The plugin uses OBS’s primary audio mixer and inherits main encoding settings. Fix: Check the primary mixer and main encoding configuration, then adjust the separate vertical bitrate if needed.
A destination does not receive the intended layout
Likely cause: The destination was assigned to the wrong orientation or stream key. Fix: Verify destination assignments in Streamlabs or channel orientations in Restream; for YouTube’s encoder route, match each format to its corresponding stream key before starting.
