How to Stream H.265 Videos to YouTube Live from a Remote Server

A practical guide to sending H.265 video from a remote server to YouTube Live, including the HLS requirements and the unresolved RTMP/RTMPS codec discrepancy.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the clearest documented HEVC route, send your video to YouTube Live over HLS. YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly accepts HEVC (H.265), while its RTMP/RTMPS documentation conflicts: one current settings page lists H.265, but the protocol comparison page lists H.264 only for RTMP/RTMPS. If you need RTMPS, verify that your current YouTube stream configuration and encoder support HEVC before relying on it. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC.

Choose HLS or RTMPS before configuring the server

Factor HLS RTMPS
HEVC documentation YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly lists HEVC. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.265, but its protocol comparison page lists H.264 only for RTMP/RTMPS. Verify support in the current Live Control Room configuration.
Latency Usually higher because delivery uses playlists and segments. YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ordinary content, including low-latency use.
Media and transport Muxed M2TS containing HEVC video and AAC audio; upload playlists and segments over HTTPS. RTMP carried over TLS to the correct RTMPS endpoint and application path, using port 443 and SNI.
HDR Supported with HEVC and specified 10-bit color settings. YouTube says HDR over RTMP(S) supports H.265, but the protocol documentation conflict still applies.
Best fit A clearly documented HEVC path, especially when resolution or HDR matters more than lowest latency. A potentially lower-latency route, provided the current stream configuration confirms HEVC compatibility.

YouTube’s protocol comparison page was last updated 2026-06-01 UTC. The documentation does not explain or reconcile the RTMP(S) discrepancy, so do not assume that an encoder’s ability to send HEVC means YouTube will accept it on every ingest route.

Check the H.265 source file first

Before sending an existing file or stream unchanged, inspect its video profile, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and container. For HLS, YouTube requires muxed M2TS, HEVC video, and AAC audio. If the video is already HEVC but the audio or container does not meet those requirements, remux or transcode the parts that need changing.

  • Confirm the file really contains H.265/HEVC video; a filename or extension does not establish its codec.
  • Check that the audio can be supplied as AAC and that the HLS output contains only one audio track.
  • Check frame rate, GOP behavior, and color metadata against the intended YouTube ingest path.
  • For HDR, verify the source’s bit depth and color metadata before attempting passthrough.

These checks follow YouTube’s published ingest requirements; they do not guarantee that a particular file or FFmpeg build will work unchanged. YouTube’s documentation does not validate a specific FFmpeg command for this workflow.

Send HEVC to YouTube over HLS

  1. Get the HLS ingest address. Obtain it from the YouTube Live API or YouTube’s creator interface. The creator-interface route is described as beta and may change; use the address and setup shown for your current stream.
  2. Prepare a compliant output. Package the video as muxed M2TS with HEVC video and AAC audio. Use a closed GOP and keep the frame rate at or below 60 fps. The HLS guide supports a single audio track.
  3. Generate a media playlist and segments. YouTube specifies segments of one to four seconds. Send media playlists—not master playlists—and their segments to YouTube using HTTPS with HTTP PUT or POST. The HLS guidance also describes TS segments, a rolling playlist, no byte range, and HTTPS upload.
  4. Start the sender and verify ingest. Check the Live Control Room for received video and audio, then confirm that the stream health is good and the watch page plays. Keep the source, server, protocol, audio path, bitrate, and intended duration the same as the planned event when testing.

HLS’s segmented delivery usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC. YouTube specifies one-to-four-second segments, but the cited material does not give a measured end-to-end delay for this remote-server setup.

Set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. It recommends up to 60 fps. The following are YouTube’s HEVC bitrate recommendations on its current live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026—not independent performance measurements.

Output Recommended HEVC bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

Choose the row that matches the actual output resolution and frame rate, and use HEVC figures rather than H.264 recommendations. The server needs stable outbound capacity above the selected video bitrate to allow for audio, protocol overhead, and network variation; YouTube does not prescribe a specific headroom figure in the cited settings.

Configure RTMPS only after confirming HEVC support

If you prefer RTMPS, first check the current stream configuration in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder and selected ingest route accept HEVC. The official pages disagree, so RTMPS should not be treated as an unambiguous HEVC path.

  2. Use the full correct server address and application path, with the rtmps scheme.
  3. Connect over TLS on port 443 and send SNI with the correct server hostname.
  4. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream.
  5. Run a test and confirm that YouTube receives the expected video and audio before the event.

YouTube notes that SSL errors can point to a wrong endpoint or port, while timeouts can indicate that plain RTMP was used instead of RTMPS.

Configure HDR when the source is HDR

For HLS HDR, YouTube specifies HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG transfer, and Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix. The metadata sent with the output must match the source and the configured output; incorrect or mismatched color metadata can prevent the intended HDR presentation. YouTube also documents H.265 HDR over RTMP(S), but that guidance does not resolve the separate disagreement over HEVC support on that protocol.

Test and monitor the remote stream

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” It advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health and warning messages during the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the same source, ingest protocol, server, bitrate, and audio path planned for the real broadcast.
  • Check that the Live Control Room receives both picture and sound, then inspect the watch page and available quality rendition.
  • Watch stream health and warnings while the stream is running; a server process being active does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  • Keep an operator able to respond to ingest or network problems, especially during a long event.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not accept the HEVC stream over RTMP(S). The current protocol configuration may not support HEVC; YouTube’s official pages conflict on RTMP(S). Confirm the selected stream protocol and codec in Live Control Room. Use HLS if you need the explicitly documented HEVC route.
HLS ingest rejects the media or shows no picture. Container, codec, playlist type, or segment-upload method may not meet the HLS requirements. Check muxed M2TS, HEVC video, AAC audio, media (not master) playlists, TS segments, and HTTPS PUT or POST uploads.
Picture arrives but audio does not. Audio codec, track count, or muxing may be incompatible with the HLS requirements. Check for AAC audio in the muxed output and a single audio track.
Connection fails with an SSL error. For RTMPS, the endpoint or port may be wrong. Use the RTMPS address and application path supplied for the stream, TLS on port 443, and the correct hostname for SNI.
RTMPS connection times out. The sender may be attempting plain RTMP rather than RTMPS, or the route may otherwise be unreachable. Confirm the scheme is rtmps, the endpoint is current, and outbound connectivity permits the connection.
Stream health fluctuates. Available server egress may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the network may vary. Check outbound capacity and stream-health warnings; if needed, choose a lower HEVC bitrate that still matches the intended output.
HDR looks wrong or is not identified as HDR. Bit depth, transfer function, primaries, matrix, or metadata may not match. For HLS, verify 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and metadata consistent with the source.

Remote-server costs and hardware choices

This workflow can use software already installed on a suitable remote server; a dedicated hardware encoder is not a universal requirement. If you are considering hardware for HDR, YouTube names Cobalt and Telestream products in its HDR documentation, but that does not establish that every model supports remote operation or the exact ingest route you need. Check the specific model’s manual for HEVC, HLS or verified RTMPS compatibility, M2TS output when using HLS, and source color support.
