Python can manage a YouTube livestream’s broadcast lifecycle, but it does not switch the video being sent to YouTube. To rotate media, use a playback source such as OBS’s VLC Video Source to play a list of files, then use Python and the YouTube Live Streaming API for broadcast and stream operations. A YouTube playlist—the collection of videos on your channel—is a different thing from the media playlist feeding the live stream.
First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from the live video source
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos hosted on YouTube. The YouTube Data API can add, list, update, or delete items in that collection. A media playlist, by contrast, is a list of local or otherwise accessible files that a player or encoder reads to produce the audio and video sent to the livestream.

Adding an item with playlistItems.insert changes YouTube playlist membership; the API reference does not describe it as a control for switching the content in an active livestream. The operation requires snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId and has a documented quota cost of 50 units. That quota cost applies to this playlist-insertion method, not to livestreaming generally.
What Python can control—and what it cannot
Google describes the API this way: “The YouTube Live Streaming API lets you create, update, and manage live events on YouTube.” Its resources separate the broadcast event from the stream that carries audio and video. The official workflow treats creating a broadcast, creating a stream, and binding them together as distinct operations. Read the API overview and broadcast and stream workflow.

The Python client exposes liveBroadcasts methods such as insert, bind, list, and transition. These can orchestrate event setup and lifecycle changes. They do not replace the player or encoder supplying the changing media. See the Python liveBroadcasts client reference.
| Component | Job it handles | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Streaming API called from Python | Create and manage broadcast and stream resources, associate them, and transition broadcast state. | Requires authorized API access; it does not itself play or rotate media files. |
| OBS VLC Video Source | Play a list of media files as a source, with loop and shuffle settings. | Requires OBS and VLC; this is the playback route, not a YouTube playlist API feature. |
| YouTube playlist API | Manage membership in a YouTube playlist. | Playlist membership operations are not documented as switching the active live feed. |
Set up automatic media rotation with OBS and VLC
The OBS Project documents the VLC Video Source as a way to play a list of media files, with options to loop the playlist and shuffle it. VLC must be installed for this source. This gives you the media rotation layer; the Python API work described below manages the YouTube event. The steps here describe the division of responsibilities, not a tested end-to-end script or unattended controller. OBS Media Sources documentation.

- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Prepare the media. Put the recordings you intend to play in an accessible location and decide whether they should play in a fixed order or shuffle. Confirm that you have the rights to use and livestream them.
- Configure the VLC Video Source in OBS. Add the source and supply the media-file list. Enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat, and enable Shuffle Playlist if order should vary. VLC is a prerequisite for this source. OBS also documents visibility and network-caching behavior; review those options for your scene and media rather than assuming one setting fits every setup.
- Check the playback before going live. Confirm that the source plays the intended files and continues through the list as configured. The OBS media-source documentation describes these playback controls; it does not establish a particular encoder configuration or Python control scheme.
Use Python to create, bind, and manage the YouTube broadcast
The API sequence below is the documented resource workflow. Exact authentication setup, client-library installation, and runnable code depend on your Google Cloud project and application, so this is a procedure rather than a copy-paste script.
- Authorize the application. Set up an application that can authorize a Google account for the required YouTube operations. The bind method reference lists authorization scopes for binding; creation and lifecycle operations also require authorization. Confirm that the channel is eligible for livestreaming—eligibility is account-specific and cannot be inferred from API access alone.
- Create or select a
liveBroadcast. When creating one, provide a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Google says the start time must be in the future and sufficiently near for reliable scheduling; consult the current broadcast insert reference for the method’s exact requirements. - Create or select a
liveStream. The implementation guide’s stream example specifies ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. Choose values suitable for your actual encoder and delivery setup; the available references here do not establish a universal bitrate, codec, or encoder command. - Bind the resources. Call
liveBroadcasts.bindto associate the broadcast and stream. The API associates a broadcast with one stream. Review the bind reference for authorization and parameters. - Start the media source and encoder. Start OBS and make sure the configured playback source is feeding the stream. Python’s broadcast calls do not launch or replace that playback source.
- Check stream state before a transition. Before calling a transition that relies on an active stream, check the bound stream’s
status.streamStatus. Google’s transition reference specifically advises verifying that the stream is active. - Monitor the live output. Watch playback in OBS and the YouTube live control room. The cited API and OBS references document resource operations and playlist controls, but do not establish automatic recovery behavior for a custom Python-and-OBS setup.
Keep the automation within the documented limits
- Do not use playlist insertion as a media switch.
playlistItems.insertchanges an ordinary YouTube playlist; it is not documented to replace what an encoder is sending live. See the method reference and PlaylistItems resource. - Do not assume a channel is eligible. Check livestream availability for the specific account before building an unattended schedule.
- Do not assume the API runs OBS. The documented API operations manage YouTube resources. How to control OBS or its media source from Python is not established by these references.
- Do not assume one encoder profile fits every stream. Confirm current YouTube guidance for the intended resolution, frame rate, and encoder. The sources cited here do not substantiate universal bitrate or codec settings.
- Respect content rights and platform rules. Only stream media you are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies. Playlist automation does not grant rights to recordings or guarantee monetization.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The broadcast exists, but no video reaches YouTube. | The stream resource, binding, encoder, or media source. | Confirm that the intended stream is bound to the broadcast, start the encoder and playback source, and verify that the stream status becomes active. |
| A transition request fails or is premature. | Stream status or broadcast state. | Check the bound stream’s status.streamStatus before transitioning, then consult the transition reference for valid state changes. |
| The media list does not play in OBS. | VLC dependency, file accessibility, or source configuration. | Install VLC, verify that the listed files are accessible, and review the VLC Video Source settings in the OBS documentation. |
| Changing a YouTube playlist leaves the live video unchanged. | The edited resource is a YouTube playlist rather than the outgoing media source. | Configure the files in the player feeding OBS; playlist-item operations manage playlist membership, not the live feed. |
| The broadcast cannot be scheduled as expected. | Start-time requirements or channel eligibility. | Use a future start time within the reliably schedulable window described in the insert reference, and check eligibility for the account. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does playlist rotation through the YouTube API change the video on an active livestream?
No. The playlist API manages YouTube playlist membership; a playback source must supply the live audio and video.
Can Python still be part of the setup if OBS plays the files?
Yes. Python can call the Live Streaming API for broadcast and stream resource management while OBS/VLC handles media playback.
